  • Join us for a walk around Culloden Battlefield.
The Jacobite rising came to a brutal end on 16 April 1746 at Culloden where the Jacobite army led by Charles Edward Stuart ( The Bonnie Prince) was defeated by the British.
Immediately after the defeat, the Highland way of life, including the wearing of clan tartans was banned leading to the Highland Clearances.
The Battlefield is a mass grave and memorial site for the brave Highlanders who fought and died. It is a historical point of interest and was popularised by the Outlander book and TV series.
Nearby locations to visit include the Clava Cairns and Inverness.

To pot with Outlander and these cheesy TV shows! These places are of far greater significance than that. They were defeated by the Hanoverian army, which had more Scots than the Jacobite army. It was nothing to do with Scotland / England.

Of course they are of greater significance than the books and tv show. I don't see anyone here suggesting they aren't. That said, the books and TV show did bring Culloden into vivid awareness of people around the world. That's pretty cool, and it's been great for Scottish tourism plus ten years of jobs for the cast and crew. What's not cool is the fact that some Outlander fans do not treat spaces like these with the reverence they deserve. But that's a people problem, not an Outlander problem.
