    Thank you so much Mr.Georg for that great explanation , I always have the question why you neglect the resistance of the tower itself? does it have thing to do with the simulation ? Thank you

      Good question. The resistance of the tower is included in the simulation but it is not the important. It is kind of included in the grounding resistance of the tower. If you want to see the effect, goto www.ecsp.ch and click on the image with the title power lightning protection. So you will be able to change the value of the grounding resistance by the slider appearing on it when mousover. It is free, try it...

    What about wood pole power lines? Wood is relatively good insulator.

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure if this changes much because lightning can strike a tower but between towers as well. And the shielding wire must be grounded at the pols and thus even wooden poles would be conducting.

      @@georgschett801 The shielding wire is not installed on 20 kV power lines. In my country there are still some 10 kV and 20 kV power lines with wood poles

    How does lightning affect power in high rise buildings? Here in Singapore, our power grid is entirely underground but lightning still causes power trips in apartments. It quite common during heavy thunderstorms and a trip even fried my bloody laptop once

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There can be many reasons. If lightning hits a building for example, very high currents flow along the building grounding system which can induce overvoltages in the building power supply system. These overvoltages can well initiate a spark leading to a short circuit which will be cleared by a fuse. Thus the local blackout.

    Hi Georg and thankyou for this. As a system operator we were always aware of the affects of the lightning strike (CB's trip and reclose) but not necessarily the physics behind it. So if lightning is conducted from the shield wire to ground there isn't a phase OV so no trip? When the phase insulator flashes over and the wave front hits the SA at the station and it then conducts the current to ground would the protection scheme still detect the phase OV and trip the line? Does the impedance of the SA increase as it heats up to limit the current to ground? Thanks. BTW I was at Lucerne for my honeymoon in 1987. Beautiful place.

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind feedback. If the lightning hits the shield wire without subsequent backflash across the line insulation at the tower, there is no short circuit and thus no trip. The trip happens because of the short circuit and not because of the overvoltage. The lightning overvoltage is too short for tripping an overvoltage protection relay. The current impulse at the SA is also very short and thus I guess there will be no major heat up. The resistance of the SA may vary a little in function of temperature but the major impact on the resistance comes for the current amplitude through the SA and its none-linear characteristics. Nice to hear that you enjoyed Lucerne, definitely a beautiful place.

    In India they will just trip off the entire grid when there is lighting they don't want to take any risk

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This cannot be the case for the entire grid, it would take hours to re-synchronize all the generation. It might however be correct for some small remote segments of the rural distribution grid where the protection may not be adequate yet. I have spent lots of time in India discussing protection with local utility experts and I have never heard this.

    Thank you very much for the video, it is great, sir how we can avoid congestion in power systems (in the distribution level)?

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I am not sure I get your question right. Normally cables and lines are protected for example by overcurrent relays. During the planning phase you have to make sure that the maximum loads possible are not exceeding the distribution system ratings. There are special software packages which enable a proper system design based on local standards.

      to your first question: the line starts if you put the mouse cursor on the connector, then the red circle should appear. Then click left and then the line should appear. Then you can double click to end it or you click once to re-direct or you click on another connector to stop it.
      The second question: the files are available if you click on the images at the bottom. You may have to wait a few seconds until it loads.

    • @georgschett801
      @georgschett801  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To some extent. A very precise simulation requires many details. However most of the time this is not really needed. The program enables you to model the impact of a lightning strike close to a substation to a great level of details and there is plenty of literature which can support you accordingly.

    Can the shield wire handle the lightning current if it is directly hit by a lightning strike?
