    I took a private lesson a couple of weeks ago and it really opened a lot of doors. It was cool to talk directly to one of the great players and get questions answered. Well worth it . Zoom also allows editing so I was able to make the entire lesson into sections and I can go back and review the material.

      @Michael Ploucha well said. I took a private lesson with GT last week and it was the best money I have ever spent! Too bad I was a little star struck and my brain froze along with my hand. Ughh.. o well- I have the recording and have been working on it daily since. Hopefully I can get the stuff down quick enough to get a second lesson while they’re hopefully still available! So cool to talk directly to one of the best guitarist in the world IMO! Just a great guy, and I feel so blessed that I was able to do the PL.

    Mr Guthrie, your excitement and energy is contagious, thanks for the good vibes. And thank you for keeping us coming back to the basics. Its so easy to get caught up in so much other things when it comes to guitar playing, especially in TH-cam. Chords, chords, chords. In some ways, i think we could all be better lead players if we were really good rhythm players, cause you've got to know your chords.

    Thanks for another great lesson Guthrie! There's another great benefit of learning chords that I don't really hear people talk about and that's the fact that learning new chords helps you in your creativity and songwriting.
    A while back I did a video talking about this idea but in short, it seems like every time I learn a new chord and get it "into" my fingers, I end up writing a new song with it. It just opens up a new realm for me.
    Congratulations on the 47 days of sobriety! I wish you many more in good health and happiness!

    Thanks, Guthrie. I've been playing for 50 years as a novice, and really started focusing on CAGED over the last year. What a difference a day makes! Wish I'd've had someone to guide me in the early days, but you know, water under the bridge! So glad you're here to help the younger players get a handle on the right things to focus on in their formative years. Keep it up; it's leaders like you that help insure the guitar lives on as a viable musical tool. Much appreciated, my friend!

      Well said @Timothy Johnson! I’ve been a novice for about 36 years, and just learning the caged system this past year is so helpful. Wish we had TH-cam in the 80’s ha! Water under the bridge is right. Never too late to learn this stuff. Now I can practice with intentionally and hopefully take things to another level.

    Learning the fretboard--whichever way clicks for you--is the closest thing to quick, dramatic improvement as it gets on the guitar. Love Guthrie's no BS, straight to the point approach in all his lessons. Way too many "magic fix!!" or "look-how-much theory I know!!" lessons on TH-cam, the perps of which probably account for the thumbs down on this vid.

    Question....You mentioned the foundation is to learning 4 things....the chord shape, the arpeggios (the 1,3 & 5 of the major scale), the major scale......and the one I'm confused on is where you say also learn the pentatonic.....do you mean the major pentatonic or the minor pentatonic? I ask as when I've seen you very briefly run your fingers over the fretboard and talk about the pentatonic it looks like your playing the flat 3rd in the e -minor shape rather than the 3rd. Thanks

    Practicing with purpose is something I need to do more of. It is difficult after you have some chops, because it is so easy and fun to put on a backing track and just wail. This is good for my fluidity, but it doesn’t expand my capabilities.
    Congrats on being alcohol free. My experience with guys I have known, or know of from Tenessee is that it is a drinking culture. Congrats again.

    • @BurnleyNuts
      @BurnleyNuts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree, I'm fairly good at learning new things but I often forget to reiterate the basics such as Guthrie mentions. I'm fine with many scales and know my chords mostly but definitely need to drum in those arpeggios in all of the different locations through the CAGED positions. It's too easy you just play over some backing chords I, IV, V and just noodle or even play a few tunes. I really need to drum home some key points just as I have scales over the years. As you mention it's easy to become mentally lazy.

I’ve actually become a part time guitar teacher from people just asking, and commenting, “I like what you’re playing…what is that?”
    FYI I quit drinking 2+ years ago and for anyone out there…you CAN play in bars and have a ‘drink’ with musician buddies without drinking. I drank hard, but there’s something refreshing walking on stage feeling mentally sharp. Can’t wait for new merch and to make a trip to Nashville soon. Thanks!

    Great lesson. What you played to outline the E7 chord would've been great as a finger exercise to just do repeatedly until you start to burn the vision of the chord shapes into your brain. I slowed the vid down to 50% speed & figured out just the first 8 notes & made up the rest. It's not exactly what you did here, but I think I cover the same bases of going from the A-shape E chord up to the G-shape E, etc., and then I actually heard a resolution to A in my brain so I ended by sliding to the 3rd of A on the B string at the 14th fret. When I'm done with work for the day I'm gonna do that another 100 times because it's already helping my brain visualize ways to connect between those shapes. I've been playing since the 80's but I still have a real passion for learning more about guitar and your videos are really great. Thanks!
