  • Today we start our first-ever RV caravan trip across the country, but with a new spin. We are comparing 3 separate trucks head-to-head. What will be the best truck to own as an RV tow vehicle?
    In this episode, we start our journey in Alabama as we show you a fresh take on RV travel. What is it like traveling with 6 people for months at a time? Departure times, fueling schedules, hangry-ness, and dead ends...it's all here!

    Been full timing it in our 3500 SRW Cummins 5 years now. Here's what I have noticed at RV/Camp grounds across the USA. Around the Indiana/Kentucky/Tennessee portion of the US and it's nearly all Powerstrokes and Duramax's. Hardly a Ram in sight. Ford/GM are real popular in that part of the country. But start traveling west and about the time you hit Colorado/NM/Arizona the Rams start outnumbering the other brands. I believe the higher concentration of Ford/GM back east is due to a lack of terrain that can put these diesel trucks to a real test. I've climbed mountains just east of Kingman, Az during the summer where temps hit 122F during a 7% climb thousands of feet up and it really puts your drivetrain to genuine manufacturers stress test. We used to park at Valencia Travel Village in California and would regularly count the diesel trucks where Rams were 70% of all diesel trucks in that park. If you're gonna push the design limits, best to trust that to Ram/Cummins. Just my .02 😉

    As a truck driver, I really like having a CB radio. It helps me out a lot not only to find out where the police are any accidents any detours you are looking to have an a CB radio and I tow with a 2003 Chevy 2 Wheel Dr. extended cab, 8 foot bed with a Duramax diesel automatic, I haven’t gone cross country but when I’m out in Ohio, I get 14 model to gallon when I’m in Pennsylvania I get about eight because of all the mountains I live in Pennsylvania by the way, I never drive over 60 miles an hour. I learned that seas on fuel again another great video. Keep up the good work we love you guys and keep the GMC you could run out till you get about a half 1,000,000 miles on it before you have to do any real maintenance.

    I've done caravanning before and we always found that the best way to do it was just a meet-up at a specific spot rather than trying to stay together the entire time. Usually it was a welcome center. Sometimes it was just somewhere two or three hours away.

    • @PKCrouse

    • @RushinTruckin
      @RushinTruckin ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Then it’s not caravanning, it’s meeting up. The definition of a caravan is multiple vehicles traveling together in single file.

    • @jimg2885
      @jimg2885 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RushinTruckin are you thinking people don't know what a caravan is? Kim said she has done caravanning before. To me traveling in a caravan sucks as you are always worried about staying together. Some main thoroughfares have stop lights and a few people get through and the light turns red. The rest now are lagging behind. That is the pain in the ass of traveling in a caravan. That's just me.

    We love watching your videos y’all make us laugh a lot.
    I have two comments
    1. Never use google maps or Apple Maps when towing without checking the route before you leave. Even RV trip wizard will steer you wrong at times.
    2. This will probably get me a lot of hate mail but I’ll make a prediction on what truck does better on fuel. The SRW Ford will get the best mileage, your have tires that will cost you mileage and the Dually well it has too many tires on the ground costing him mileage.
    Good luck we’re looking forward to who wins.
    Safe travels and happy RVing

    The "best truck" discussion will go on for eternity. Just be sure you have one that will meet your needs, that is, one that will tow your rig safely, is big enough to control the load, and not maxxed out every time you are behind the wheel. You have to do a bit of math using the door sticker and your rigs weight as a starting point. Dually trucks will be better for large rigs, diesel will (almost) always move heavier loads easier. Long wheel base usually provides more stability for towing so the tail doesn't wag the dog. AND you get an 8 foot bed that never has to be made.
    Once you get an idea about what your needs are, the big 3 have so many options, and really, they are all good trucks. You might be a Chevy lover. The Duramax is a great engine and Allison trans is very good. You may love (like me) your Ford Superduty. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. That 6.7 is a beast, and I could pull the moon down here if a could get a chain around it. The new gas burning Godzilla motor is a monster as well, and rivals diesel power. The RAM family swears by the Cummins, and RAM has a very nice interior.
    As long as you are out there, making some memories and use of every day above ground, you are doing it right and more than most folks.

    We caravanned to Yukon and Alaska. Great trip. We were the lead driver with 3 rigs - the drivers behind us got to see where ALL the frost heaves were - the brake lights or the trailer bouncing gave them a big heads up. If we did it again, would be a good idea to take turns being in the lead. Also, the radios worked good with 3 rigs.

    Our 2 girls really love watching your videos not to mention the wife and myself. I prefer the dually powerstroke myself (rated for 35,000lbs towing and 7500lbs payload). The big rear end holds the trailer firm when crossing some tricky bridge to highway transitions. The trailer does not push the truck around, but when unhooked and driving around town it can be difficult finding parking. I guess always a downside to everything. Safe travels Hanks!

    We had a F350 pulling a 35ft. Toy hauler. My husband wanted to get a dully but I takes him out of it. Not having the dully saved us a big headache in that we didn’t need to keep up on the extra tires. Having to also buy two more tires would cost a lot more money.
    Hopefully you all have large trucks like a F350 because with the rigs you all are pulling you will find that anything smaller in the higher elevations the truck will not handle as good. The engine will need to work harder.
    Also know that when your at 6000 ft elevation your generators won’t work as well.
    HAPPY TRAVELING YA ALL.
    We traded all our huge stuff for a smaller truck F150 and a 17ft pull behind trailer . We will be out west this summer and we’ll say hi to ya all if we happen to cross paths. We will let you know how much we like our down sizing. I’m sure when you reach our age you’ll be happy to down size as well. We will be 73 and 83 this summer. I’m the only driver, my husband is legally blind .
    Stay safe out there

  • @ouRVisionnomadicliving
    @ouRVisionnomadicliving ปีที่แล้ว

    Over the years we have done many road trips that involved several trailers. Everyone in our family have CBs in their trucks, we have found them to be the best way to communicate between rigs. A few years ago we stopped in the big parking area just outside of Yellowstone to take a pic with all the kids and grandkids standing next to the Yellowstone sign. Some people walked up and asked us if we were filming a Dodge Commercial as everyone in our family own Dodge/Ram trucks, all pulling TT and 5th wheels. We told them, no, just our family on vacation. 😀 They were amazed. We have found that getting to where we are going and making potty stops isnt the big deal, its when 6-8 of us all pull into the RV Park at once, most RV parks do not have that may places to park while your checking in. So we have learned to stagger checkin in a bit. Safe travels everyone!! Sean & Angie

    Will always run a GM truck over a Ford or Dodge. Just me. Would love to join that program, but any outfit that asks for SS# is a “no” go. That’s for yet another entertaining video. Thanks Hanks

      Wayne, Agree with you on the SS number issue, no retail outlet is getting that from me ever. My condo fees come directly out of my bank account monthly and they don’t have nor need my SIN to do it either.
      Is this the same fuel company that also wants access to your bank account for payment? 🍻

      @@SpykersB They ask for either a checking or savings account number. I have 1 account that I keep a minimal amount in and its just for this, that way there's no way I'm going to lose a huge amount of money.

    I went full time 2 years ago, not with a trailer but with a truck camper, and it was very tough to find a suitable truck at the time with low inventory leading to high prices, but I eventually ended up with a '17 Silverado 3500 HD High Country dually. My first truck and I went all out, Duramax and 6 speed Allison, and I couldn't be happier, it doesn't pull the most weight, but it drives like the camper isn't even on there.

    I have a gasoline-fueled Chevy Colorado Crew Cab, and I love the ride. I tows my small travel trailer (EPro 19BH) like a dream. I wish it had a different transmission, but all else is gold. MPG without trailer averages 19-20, while it hovers at 11-12 when towing.

    Nice cliffhanger you two! 🙂 We've been in that situation many-a-time too. After two years of debating (didn't want to spend the bucks), when we arrived home, we finally purchased the "Garmin TRUCK Navigator". This AFTER going in circles in Colorodo (of all places!), with no cell service. After the Garmin purchase, we haven't had that problem again - YET! The only way we got out of the Colorodo situation was with the "Rand McNally Motor Carrier's Atlas", which got us back on the correct main road (along with a trip to the nearest gas station to make sure we were right *chuckle*). Can't wait to see the conclusion on the mileage! I'm going with the Denali. The hubby hasn't taken a stand, but is really interested in seeing the GMC vs the Ford engine performances.

    We have a srw 6.2L gas F350. I've towed up to a 43' 5er @ 13K. Current rig is 36' /11K. I've cruised @ 70 mph a few times terrain allowing but typically hold between 60-65. Never once have I felt I needed a drw. There were times I wish I had a diesel but given how much we actually "camp", the cost justification wasn't there. I would say the worst part (aside from finding big enough gas stations) is the wife refuses to drive the truck. Towing or not. :)
