Dill Weed 🤣
Dill weed for sure
None of the above 😂😂😂
Son of biscuit
What I heard was "Beeeep"....lol. I'm guessing he said Dill Weed.
A little advice from a truck driver. Sometimes you need to run your 4 way hazard lights and do something slightly illegal to avoid doing something more illegal.
I’m sorry this was funny. Glad it all worked out. I could hear Dexter saying let me drive I’ll get us out of this pickle
That's exactly what Dexy was thinking! Lol
@@HappilyEverHanks lol
2 minutes into this video and I’m already living (vicariously) my worst RV nightmare…
Hoping since we went through it, so you won't have to! Haha
We invested in an RV Garmin to hopefully avoid non-RV friendly roads
Scary situation…thank god you guys made it out unscathed
Yes, get an RV garmin! Surprised you don’t have one already.
Love it. It can be dumb sometimes to but what I’ve noticed is it errors on the side of caution
AMEN! I got one just to be safe. And TruckMaps to plan out the route.
I tried the RV Garmin and it didn't find the campground we were staying at, which has been there for a couple years. I was very disappointed since that was the main reason for getting it - finding campgrounds
Yes
18 years of full timing, we’ve been there, done that. Just found your channel and love it, you both and Dexter crack me up! You did a great job getting out of that pickle!
Reminds me of a situation I had where the RV life app sent me down this crazy mountain side dirt road because the main road into the RV park was marked "no trucks". After a few hair pin turns the road suddenly ended and I found myself having to back out into this one lane dirt road where I then met other drivers who weren't exactly excited to pull over to let my giant RV through. After all of that, I managed to back into a concrete picnic table at the campsite. Somehow that didn't cause me to quit RVing.
I so totally relate to "If I was driving I would have gotten out and cried!". I have been there! I know how that feels!
It's great that you guys choose to share these experiences.
You are not alone when it comes to taking a less than desirable route.
For example, we took our first big trip from MN to FL in November. Along the way, there were several challenges.
The most memorable one for us was one evening when we were planning on staying at a Bass Pro Shop by Montgomery, AL.
I used Google maps to pre-plan the route & entered Montgomery as a stop & then added Bass Pro Shop as a stop to preview the route.
I then chose a start route without removing the Montgomery stop, which led us right into downtown Montgomery, with our 37' Reflection 5th wheel.
Luckily, it was later in the evening & there was very little traffic. We were able to find our way back to interstate & get headed on our way to our destination.
It was frustrating & stressful for us in the moment. All worked out in the end, and we just added one more memory/story from our trip. 😎
My Google Maps almost guided me into the lake when I moved to Havasu Lake (on the CA side) when I wasn't too familiar with the area. I knew it was farther but I got a sightseeing trip of the area. the other side of the lake is where God considers. Not my side so much yet.
You will look back and laugh someday.
I don't have words for how much I love you guys ❤️. Thank you for keeping it real 😂😂
It’s our 49th anniversary today! We’ve been in some sketchy situations ourselves,
that’s what camp fire stories are all about and at least we laugh about them 😂! Especially the tunnel that was built too low in Mobile, AL, we were so enjoying our fresh boiled peanuts at the time!
Marriage has it’s ups and downs, enjoy each other, laugh , work it out, just like the pickle you were in, it’s so worth it!❤. Love your videos guys!
Getting lost sucks. Getting lost with a big ass rv is disaster. Been there and hated it. Stress levels make our mouths say things we don’t mean but just gotta say. Glad it worked out.
I live in Baton Rouge and graduated from LSU. It was funny seeing you drive through campus (I’m sorry, but I laughed) because I’m familiar with every road you went on. That’s some pretty amazing sh*t when you went on the narrow one-way in front of Memorial Tower and the Student Union. It’s tight getting through there in my truck alone. Can’t imagine pulling a large rig. At first I was wondering why you were going through campus, then I realized you were trying to get to Farr Park. I live about 10 minutes from there. Thanks for the great video of what NOT to do. Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially because I recognized every road. Next time, stop at eat at The Chimes. You passed right in front of it on Highland Road.
I know you mentioned it, but here's what we do pulling the same trailer.
1. Plan route with RV Life.
2. Verify against our RV Garmin and use the Garmin for driving.
3. Use the truck's on screen navigation or Waze (through AndroidAuto or Apple CarPlay) set at a little bit wider view so that we can see the whole surrounding area.
What we NEVER do is use Google Maps or similar for actual navigation.
Hi, my name is Jeff and I am new to the Rv. My Rv small but I love it. I understand your stress trust me I’m over the road truck driver and I get it if I have any advice to go it’s to take a deep breath, and never panic. Keep up the good work you guys are great. Have fun on your travels. Be safe and God bless.
This same thing happened to me this past summer at NAU. i pull a 29ft fifth wheel. I felt for you. I enjoy your content. and i just recieved
My Hoodie this past week. Thanks Hanks
HapplyEver Hanks didn't looks so happy. I think that was a hamburger dill pickle you got yourself into, but in the end Happy returned to the Hanks!! GOD JOB Guys!! Safer travel, see ya next week.
I’m solo in a 5th wheel and the beginning is literally my biggest nightmare😮! Way to keep cool heads…
Great vid guys as usual. I can relate with stressful moments like this. for example 3 years ago we were on our first day of our 4 week trip and google maps redirects us off the freeway in Cincinnati and puts us on a route with a train trussell overhead. No where to turn aroud, huge line behind us because we all got redirected this way with goolge maps. The trussell said it was 13 ft 8 inches and we knew we were 13 ft 3 inches. Proced to go through and the sound that no one wants to hear happens. long story short we were 2 inches to tall but did minimal damage to the A/C and we could continue on our trip (wich was great after the first day hurdle). lets say after that we went out and bought a Garmin RV unit the next day. My wife and I call it making memories, lol. thanks for sharing the video and safe travels to both of you.
Eric
We have tried all of the apps you’ve mentioned, and by far the best RV information we get is from our Garmin RV GPS. Love Waze when we are not hooked up. RV life is OK but to repeat, our Garmin RV GPS has been the best when towing.
Y'all are so incredibly lucky! Y'all actually pulled a rig through LSU campus in front of the Student Union, and down Chimes St. without getting in a wreck! We've been going to that campus our whole lives, and NEVER seen anyone pull a RV through the heart of it!
Yea, we have all made bad decisions when towing in unfamiliar places & yes, it causes significant stress. Life happens and we have to muster the strength to overcome the disorientation and fear that can accompany it! 😮
You guys drive your truck and trailer like I do! One time, we had to back out of a post office parking lot. That was a lot of fun. And I won't tell you about the time I took it off road into the Pine Barrens of NJ. Outrageous.
Wow that’s was very hard to watch but in true Hank fashion you made it. You were the best co pilot and had all the maps out. Good job
This is why I follow you guys, You keep it REAL!, Great job driving around the campus, NENE Great job keeping Carl calm while driving 😂. God bless you both on your journey.
Another excellent video! In the old days before gps and technology I was a young kid from Kansas fresh off the farm driving semi and 45 ft trailers running around the east coast. We had all the paper maps of all the cities and always would lay out our course before going into the cities . All it took was missing a street sign or making a wrong turn and would have an experience like yours. You both did great!
You two are still so nice and playful when things get stressful. From here it looks like you really kept your cool.
Great video and good advice. I think the number 1 thing in tough driving situations is to stay calm! College campuses can be the worst to drive on as they're not easy to navigate and aren't designed for large vehicles.
I live in Los Angeles and I'm worried about getting in a situation like this I need to go to Fresno.Do you have any recommendations for a motorhome transport my motorhome runs, I just worry about getting in a situation like this my motorhome is 20 ft long .
Before this video I had my doubts that you guys were human, but Carl confirmed it. You guys are human! I must say, if I had been in that situation my wife and I's argument would have been slightly different 😂
Three lefts make a right 😂😂
Our RV Garmin works great (most of the time) it has messed up a couple times and now we always use google map in conjunction. Love you guys.
Well done Carl. You did not lose your cool. First step in a situation like that.😊
Thank you, Richard!
Welcome to a trucker’s life! Pulling a 13‘6“ tall trailer with a total vehicle length of 73 feet while using an unreliable GPS can get interesting to say the least! I’ve had to back into major highways a few times in my career. Anyone who says they haven’t who have driven any amount of time are being less than honest. I use Google maps to see the area I’m going into and what the turns look like. I use a Garmin dezlCam 785 which allows you to input your vehicle dimensions and weight to route around low clearances and such. The Garmin is accurate most of the time, but having used it on a daily basis for 6 years it has routed me once or twice on a no truck route. We are selling our camper, but still enjoy watching your videos, happy trails.
You kids are so fun to watch love your videos so much you make me smile . Stay safe and enjoy your life
We’ve been waiting for this!!
Whew! What a tough one!
Thnx Hanks for another sincere, yet funny, entertaining and educational video. You guys are the best.
I know this was an incredibly stressful situation, but that cat joining the call and meowing like crazy was the funniest thing ever!
Dang! Glad y'all got out of that pickle but my stress level was up there too just watching this!
I used to drive semi, and work for a moving company. Had to go on to a big campus to move a student. Omg 48’ trailer plus the tractor, and it was very similar to what you guy’s experienced. I thought I was never getting out of there. It was nuts. Never again I hope
I have an RV navigation system but I also have paper maps. When I have to go through a city before hand I always check the RV navigation system vs the paper maps to determine which is the easiest route for a class A towing a car.
Sometimes technology gives me routes that make absolutely no sense for my rig. I don't know why but some days technology hates me.
Omgosh! I literally grew up around the LSU lakes and stressed out driving thru campus in a car! Lol Congrats on getting out with your RV alive and in 1 piece! 😂
That looked tight!
I now know that I could get through there so thanks for pre-running the route for me. 😂
Love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 🎸🎸
I always enjoy your videos and all your adventures. Thank you for your tips thank you I’m preparing to go full time since my mother passed we went on many adventures I bought my rig in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. I wasn’t planning on buying this large of a fifth wheel 39 feet Laredo with a bunkhouse, but I went shopping with mom. It had an extra bathroom she loved that. Hope to see you on the road someday thank you again.
I was just waiting for the overhead lines or trees to follow you without invitation! Lol.
Great video!
Safety tip:
When a tight right turn suggests danger... Make 3 left turns instead. Simply drive around the block. It takes a little longer but you'll get there without the risk of tearing up your rig.
Yall are amazing . I just wNt to know how much editing went into this episode. I heard a blip or 2. I would have went off and would have had to stop and walk around. Great video. Ya'll stay safe
Love the videos you guys make. Truly entertaining and educational. Been there done that many times as a full time local tractor trailer driver. One thing that helps me more than anything is to look at the route the GPS gives you in satellite view. I only use MAPS on the iPhone but plan route based of the satellites view mode. Look for potential problems and base the size of the roadway/turns off the satellite views. Look for objects you know the size of (cars, trucks ect.) and use that for prospective when looking at the satellite view to judge if you will be able to make a turn ect.
Trucker here - to add to what you said, Nay, Google satellite view zoomed in plus STREET VIEW will allow you to see street signs (weight limits and no trucks signs) as well as see what those turns look like.
I use those tools even though I have a $1,000 truck specific GPS cuz they aren’t 100% correct either!
Time to invest in an RV or Truck GPS that lets you enter the trailer dimensions and will help avoid situations like you encountered...I utilize a Garmin Dezl1000 truck GPS and it so far has worked flawlessly for me. I also use the Waze on the phone for traffic reports...
Hey there Hanks :) I wanted to thank you for all of your content. My partner and I are now full time RV living. It would have never been possible without you both. It has been 2months now and it was a bit of a rocky start but we are slowly getting into the swing of things... basically I just wanted to say THANKS HANKS!
Second! WOW... I was stressed to the max... especially when you were driving down the one way road parking area and that truck was stuck out... don't think I would have made it around it. UGH!! I need a drink.. NOW!
Love you guys! Google maps has lead me astray countless times. (Made me make a circle around the building I wanted, made me go on a dirt road, took me to a bus station instead of gas station). Waze is so much better. Sometimes Waze needs reset, seems to get confused.
Dill weed? Whew! That was sooo stressful. RV Safe + Apple Maps w/ Apple Car Play but I’m usually still all stressed on travel days. You two kept it together.
carl's voice on "i gotta back up" got so southern it made me so happy 😂😂😂
Renee...Pitts From Pittsburgh here. We just listed our house this past Monday. We will see you out there soon. FINALLY!!!!
Congrats! Enjoy the adventure!
I'm honored that my town and university is the star of a Hanks video. I always wondered if you'd pass through at some point. Welcome to Louisiana! Hard out here for us RVers. Thanks Hanks making me feel better about towing issues and spouse arguments. Hope you at least enjoyed seeing the campus.
You guys are so funny and so much fun! I'm an old guy who watches your travels and wishes I could do what you guys do. So much fun! Everyone loves ya'll. Thank you so much. Very enjoyable and inspiring for the old folks like me. Who knows... maybe one day I can get going and enjoy life again like you guys. Love ya'll❤. Thank you guys so much for the fun. 😊
Looks like you entered a dance you didn't want to do. Those trees had to be the worst concern, glad you got out without a scratch. Way to go Carl.
Welcome to Louisiana 🎉 if there is anything that we can do to make things worse, we have probably already done it , but please ask anyway, there may be something that our state government has overlooked 😅
Thanks for keeping it real! Safe travels!
Thank you for watching, Judy!
I literally LOL!! Got my dogs barking 🤦🏻♀️ This would definitely happen to my husband & I!! Thanks for the laugh
Waze is really intended for passenger cars/trucks. It doesn’t identify height restrictions, Rv safe roads, etc. I use Garmin for RV combined with G maps. Verify with other apps mentioned in video. Glad to know I’m not alone in finding the not quite roads 🙂 Great video as always!
Not sure if this was already mentioned but I reached out to my cousin who drives a big rig. He suggested Hammer-it’s a free app. You plug in all your measurements and your good to go. We love it.
Driving a tractor trailer across country for 20 years I have been In every situation you can imagine . Everything from having to back out 5 miles because I couldn’t get up a hill in the winter to coming up to a wooded bridge with no weight signs in the Ozark’s. The main takeaway is do not let traffic or people force you into doing something rash. Stop, get yourself a plan and take it slow.. good luck my friends and have safe travels..
That's a true testament that you two are good together. That looked like an extremely stressful situation. It must have felt like being in a Twilight Zone episode where you'd be stuck forever driving around the LSU campus forever. But you got through it together. Thank God Dexter was there to help you keep your heads😅
Kim and Vinny in CT
Hey guys as always great videos and yes we use truck map after google took us in a cement factory and a dead end road but of course the wife still uses the google map as a backup and I also have a CB radio that I had way way back lol that helps also on the highway if there is a accident and you know these truckers know the ins and out of these roads
Great video kids
I can’t believe that the cat actually stopped crying when you told it to stop😂. That was so awesome. I can’t imagine going through that on a Friday night. I congratulate you both on staying calm and it’s an inspiration to me.
Great video guys, even though it wasnt so great for you! We use the Garmen 890 and love it! But even with that we always compare it to Google maps before our trip. We had a few times when we didnt preview our route and ended up somewhere we didnt want to be! So good advice and safe travels!
I can relate. I claim I'm a full time RVer; mine is 6x8 feet, and attached to a 53' trailer. I've been doing this for a decade, and I've had my share of tight fits. And yes, I'll use the other direction's lane if I need to. Occasionally, someone will refuse to back up; I'll simply pull the air brakes until they do. That sound generally gets them to move.
And do not trust Google Maps. Always stick with the GPS that accounts for oversize vehicles; preferably one with traffic. I run both a Garmin OTR800 and CoPilot Truck; yes, at the same time. Even so, there are times you have to fly by the seat of your pants; you can't swing that turn due to construction, or a road is closed.
One advantage you have is there are two of you. Have a safety vest, a pair of radios, and hopefully a whistle easily grabbable by the passenger, who can jump out and control traffic if you need to back out of an area.
And yes, left turns are easier than right turns.
I have a GPS that sends me all over the place,,, so I edit my route,, I use the Motor Carriers Road Atlas, it is made by Rand McNally, it has saved me many times. And pay extra for the laminated one. Hope y’all have fun!!!!
Thanks Hanks for posting this video. I can feel your pain in trying to drive a fifth wheel under things that you're not sure are tall enough to pass through. We just got a new Montana High Country 5th wheel and stopped to fill up our gas (not a diesel) in the pickup at a Pilot Travel Center. The canopy over the gas pumps looked high enough to drive under. BUT, not really, I ended scrapping the front air conditioner cover before stopping after I felt and heard the crunching sound. I ended backing out and leaving the Pilot station. I wish these places would label the height of the canopy so we would know not to use the gas pump in that area. Where was this Pilot station, you ask. I can't remember specifically. I think it was somewhere in Missouri headed west to Oklahoma.
We've also been in a tricky spot or two.I had stop the oncoming traffic while my husband backed up the camper. Now we use co pilot, Waze, and Google. Co pilot has helped us out of many traffic issues especially around Atlanta!
You guys even when things get tough battle through. You always teach me something. I luv you guys. Grandpa Jack
Great video guys!! Appreciate you sharing the good, the bad and the ugly. It gave me anxiety just watching. :)
Wow, you all did great. Thank you for sharing your adventure
It was tough! Thank you, Betty, we appreciate you!
In case you didnt already know, Waze is owned by Google. That means same mapping info as Google maps, but, crowdsourced real time info on traffic, road hazards such as pot holes, tire pieces, accidents, construction etc.
I like the fact that you keep even the hard stuff and mistakes in the video. Not every trip is magically perfect. I've been towing my small 5th wheel and the road is closed for 5 miles and you are being diverted off the highway onto small side roads. Just hoping someone in front knows where they are going because the GPS basically wants you back on the road that is closed and keeps trying to get you back on it too soon. I personally love using RV Life Trip Wizard but you must preview it as I've had it wanting me to make a 120 degree turn in Myrtle Beach that from street view says no right turns. They are good about those routing issues but you have to report those issues back to them. So while I trust them I only trust them so far.
Thanks for sharing helps everyone learn from things others have been through
Thank you for watching! Sometimes one wrong/missed turn can turn into a doozy!
Great video! We tow a 33' 5th wheel. My wife, who don't, won't and refuses to drive often reminds me from the passenger seat that I can't go somewhere, then follows it up with I can't believe you did that. Then I remind her she drives a Mini Cooper and stresses when driving it through a Walmart parking lot. Hahahaha We have been in some tight places, but I think what has really helped is that we have the Reese Revolution Sidewinder hitch where the pivot point is under the the 5th wheel over hang and not in the bed of the truck at the 5th wheel connection point.
I love these kind of pickles. You championed right through it, good job!
O my Word!! I was nauseated watching you guys traverse all those trees!!! Hope they were high enough to evade roof or AC damage. I had to close my eyes and peek! And close my eyes again. Time!!
Take a breath, regroup, move forward. Thanks for the new T's, just came today!
Yes! That's so awesome- if you have Instagram use #thankshanks on your pictures so we can see! Thank you, Robert!
Thanks for sharing the bad days. Too many TH-camrs show RV Life as all rainbows and unicorns. Thanks for keeping it real.
Thank you for watching, Rob! It was definitely not a lovely moment, but it's part of the lifestyle!
We love the Waze app. Use it all the time when camping and just traveling in our regular vehicles.
I have never had Google maps match the rv life GPS. Plus the time to location on the rv life is so much longer. I did have the rv life GPS put me on some sketchy roads so I have been there. The key like you said is pre-planning the route and sticking to it
A nightmare! Great times. Memories.
Unfortunately this type of thing has happened several times to us. Mostly on the East Coast. We followed our AAA trip ticks (in the days before GPS) it happened several times. Anxiety levels rocketed up but we survived and 25 years later are still RV-n
Stopping and planning your route is always the best. Always have a plan and a backup..Good on yay to make it through.
Trees are a real problem. My neighbor seriously damaged his 5th wheel roof IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD 150 ft from his house! Lucky for him, his father in law owns a body shop that does RV repair.
A good set of rv feelers would come in handy. You know, they are like the old school curb feelers except they go on the top of your rv. Thanks Hanks RV Feelers. You're welcome! LOL. Love your channel!
It's easy to get in those situations. We found ourselves in the middle of a major college campus in Virginia Beach, the name of which i can't recall just now. We still have no idea how we got there but we got our sixty foot class A with toad out without a scratch. We felt a similar angst for what seemed forever even though it was probably fifteen minutes. Good on you for getting through it without damage ! Love your vids !
Reminded me of my trip last year when I went down to Pigeon Forge. Got stuck on some 1 1/2 Lane road winding through mountains. Then to turn into our site, took me down a one-way road. Had to back up onto the road I turned off of to avoid going through a ditch! Nothing but fun! Will definitely look ahead and follow your pointers to avoid it next time.
Hanks-gry i love it!
We love Waze because it reroutes for accidents with usually ample time to confirm with others apps that are RV friendly. We used Trucker Path as well. Like you said, if 18 wheeler can go then we are ok.
1st thing, when convoying share your location so you can see where everyone is. 2nd, Garmin is good but it will still tell you wrong, I've had it tell me turn left but showing a right turn fortunately I knew I needed to turn right. 3rd, preview your route especially stops using satellite view and be familiar with your route(navigators job). lastly, relax and don't rush bad situation into a worse one. Stay safe and stay aware.
I had sweaty palms just watching you guys. We have a Garmin RV GPS and have found it to be pretty reliable.
Love you guys. Always keeping it real. So appreciated
Thank you for watching, Trisha!
We had booked the Fairview-Riverside State Park campground, ahead of time. It was full and when we talked to the check-in person, she said that people from New Orleans would book the campground and stay the week to get away from the Mardi Grass crowd. I had gotten a 5-day city pass and had mapped out what venues we wanted to see and which days. We started the venues on the Monday and when Tuesday came, we couldn't do anything because everything shuts down for "Fat Tuesday". Even the swamp tours and the plantation tours that were outside of town shut down. Once you start the city pass, you have to finish it on consecutive days, so we basically lost one full day of activities. I now pay attention to when Mardi Grass is scheduled.
Waze is not an RV’s friend for giving directions! But it is great for knowing obstacles coming up ahead. We use Garmin, Waze, and Google maps.
