    The second movement from the A minor concerto sounds surprisingly similar to his "Christmas" concerto!

    Why does the music sound different to the score at times such as the Gavotte in the first sonata? The cello sounds as though it is playing semiquavers when the basso continuo is written in crochets and miniums is this because there are different versions of the score or perhaps because it was common to add on to what is written in baroque music?

      The second option! It's just a performing decision, nothing else. Basso continuo is a tool and a guide for performers to slightly improvise and add on to the music; of course these improvisations aren't the same as what we think of today. It was common to add ornamentations and articulations on the spot, such as the one you've mentioned, and also trills, grace notes, mordents, scales...
