This game just put most people off and it's such a shame. Easily one of the best overall soundtracks for a game and probably the absolute best the Genesis sound system has to offer.
I can say for myself yes I never made it this far. I heard the Sonic Chronicles one first, but when i finally saw this level i was like "holy sh*t this is amazing"
I heard that there was a huge change in management extremely late in the game’s development. As a result, the music producer of the game was either fired, or swapped with someone else, or had to deal with new copyright issues, or something else weird. Whatever the issue, much of the old music no longer belonged to the company. So, to compensate, they recycled old music in extremely bad midi form because the game got rushed. It’s why some of the songs are good quality (for the DS) like Imperator Ix’s theme, and why some... aren’t. That same management change is why we’ll never get the sequel even though the game ended on a cliffhanger.
Ok so I actually looked it back up instead of using old knowledge... BioWare cut the game’s dev team in half early on, and the music team became one person. So, he did what he could, and used MIDIs for the rest. Poor guy shouldn’t get the flack for bad management.

The Chronicles version sounds like if they just put the midi file through the DS’ soundfront but forgot to re-arrange it to take advantage of the instruments of the DS.

I love the use of Glissandos in the opening! I don't know how it does it, but I love how the composer managed to get the illusion of echoes in a wide open wintery space despite the Genesis not having the ability to do that! (Marble Garden in Sonic 3 did something similar) The whole thing just screams "fun in the snow" despite not being a literal wintery sounding sound (like Richard Jacques take on the song in the Saturn port of 3D Blast).

I love this track from Sonic 3D It brings a lot of nostalgia and memories too. Another favourite classic Sonic soundtrack I love from Sonic 3D. I spent a good amount of time playing Sonic 3D when I used to have a Sega Mega Drive back In the 90's such a golden memorial Sonic game It Is.

I beat this game with every chaos emerald when I was still a kid. I honestly found it to be easier than some of the 2D sonic games if we’re being honest.

I disagree. IceCap prototype music is really great in my opinion. Diamond Dust music is great too, but that track is for Sonic 3D Blast, not Sonic 3 and Knuckles. That's like asking for a Sonic 2 track in Sonic 3, doesn't work that way.

I did. Didn't know it was from 3D Blast back then cause I always give up on the second zone. The first time I heard it was actually the remix version in Sonic Chronicles, and later in Sonic FGX where I discovered this original version. It was such a great game, the boss battles are unique and I gets to play as so many characters, especially Silver.

But I also love to replay it and have managed to adjust to the jank enough to where I enjoy it more than most. the deal with jun's decline in classic-style sonic music has to do with the fact that he used to work with a sound programmer. he would compose the music on a PC, as a MIDI or some other traditional format, and then pass it over to the sound programmer to implement his music into the games. but now, sega just lets him go solo, and he doesn't exactly know how to make stuff sound like it would if a professional sound programmer were translating it over.
It’s just the instrumentation now, iirc Cyber Station Zone in Superstars was composed by him but someone else arranged it to make it sound actually good

If you play the same note with a short delay, it creates an echo effect. The game doesn't have to do it, if you do it in the sequence.
