Geoff Southby , I had number 20 on my Carlton footy jumper as kid growing up mate. My fav player. You should give Balme a pay back “clothes liner” next time you see him mate.
The Carlton fans NEVER forgave Balme..Round 13 Carlton v Richmond 1979 at Princess Park during the quarter time huddle or when Balme touched the ball He was soundly booed (which was rare that day he had 4 disposals) Fittingly It was Balme's last VFL game as a player...Sure Balmy these days is a lovely bloke..a "gentle giant" however on that sunny 1973 spring grand final day at the MCG Balme was a ruthless, out of control thug...the 1982 Grand Final win for many was sweet revenge for the pain of 1973, 1975, 1980 finals losses to Richmond..
Southby , Dench , champion's both but it is full back of the century , Silvagni was as good as any ,ever , and better than most, but , a full Back , that can go fwd, kick 5 , and hold down full back again , says. Stephen was the Greatest full back , he was a super player , how Did Ashman not win a Brownlow medal , thats what i wantsta know . GO BLUES RARARA
Re the comments regarding Neil Balme etc...... That was football back then, at all levels. Why no mention of what the Carlton players did to their opponents ? No mention of the tactics used against Peter Hudson by Southby in partnership with Vin Waite ? No mention of a skinny Tasmanian playing his first VFL game and kicking 4 goals despite being bashed and WORSE for the entire game. That night, Hudson admitted he was going to have to put on weight and CHANGE his normal game completely ......if the umpires were going to allow those brutal tactics with no penalties paid. Grow up ...... It was a man’s game but more..... it was urban warfare. Unfortunately, the game was run and managed by MEN who were happy to cheat...... Anything to ensure their team made the finals even if not good enough to win a premiership. Think about it...... Hawthorn needed a John Kennedy to teach them the facts of winning. It was not pretty.... Geelong tried to win by playing football ..... even with many notorious TOUGH mongrels in the team, they only won the one premiership when that team should have won at least 3.....possibly expected to win a lot more. What made Richmond great late 1960’s to mid 1970’s ? It wasn’t Bartley and co...... It was Balme, McLean and a few mongrels down back and mid field.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Met him down in Hobart in 2015 at the Salamanca markets at a local cafe. Tried to cut the line in front of me. Total flog.
