I owned one of these about 10-15 years ago. I remember seeing it at a local electronics shop when I was a kid in the early 90's when it first debuted. It was playing a demo LD showing off some gameplay with snippets of popular movies mixed in (I vividly remember seeing Terminator 2). I always thought it was so cool, but the price was insane! IIRC a Sega Genesis was going for around $150 at the time and the Laseractive was $999 plus $299 for each pack. I was fortunate enough to find one on eBay for around $200 shipped with the Sega pack and a handful of laserdiscs. Fun fact: none of the Sega CD units have copy protection, so any model (including this one) can play burned Sega CD games with no modification. Unfortunately I never owned any of the Mega LD games (they were too expensive and had terrible reviews), but it's neat to see them in action. It's a shame none of the OG LD games from the early 80's made it to the Laseractive (I'm looking at your Dragon's Lair). Anyway, great video. It brought back a lot of memories.

MSX., Atari 520ST and Amiga series of mid 80s computers could also play Laserdisc games, Astron Belt being one and a full conversion of Dragon's Lair 1 + 2 for the Atari ST and Amiga on Laserdisc by Microdeal being another. We appear to have been fascinated with Laserdisc games for a long time lol

I got so excited seeing the Laseractive in magazines as a kid. The potential was amazing, as LD was already the sweetest format for films, and I loved playing Mad Dog McCree in the arcades. It was like the Rolls Royce of consoles, as it was so high class, and expensive. Living in the UK we never got to see it, as it was only released in the US and Japan. But to me it was like this almost un-real dream. I scoured mags for any mention of it. Of course, now seeing it, the content def didn't live up to the potential. Such a shame!
If you can Erin, check out the Laseractive game, I Will: The Story Of London, it's a video based detective game. It's not great, but the acting's hilarious. There's also a driving based level around the historic British city of Bath, which is basically Google Street View in 1993, but a lot quicker! One of the mini games also involves you doing washing up in a restaurant to earn money!

I bought a Pioneer LaserActive back in the day. It was at my local Incredible Universe store for something like $1100 or more for the longest time, but then it was discontinued. I had been considering getting a laserdisc player for a while, and when the floor model of the LaserActive was knocked down to $209 I grabbed it, along with my first laserdisc movie, Clerks (I wanted to hear the commentary and see the extended footage and thankfully cut ending). I also wanted a LaserActive because I had a Pioneer rack stereo system already, and it could play Sega and PC Engine/Turbo games with Paks. So, I grabbed the LaserActive, went over to the section where the games were, and they were gone. They'd sent the games away a week earlier according to an employee, along with all of the Sega and PC Engine paks. I did find Pyramid Patrol somewhere else, but didn't have a game pak to play it with. When Incredible Universe closed down, they found a stray Sega pak in a torn box and marked it down to $5, which I immediately grabbed. Years later I bought Rocket Coaster through mail order, which was the only other game I've ever owned for the system. I used mine mostly as a Sega CD player and movie player. Any time I'd play the Sega CD game Surgical Strike on it, there was a one in three chance the disc would get stuck inside the console and I'd have to fish out the CD with a makeshift hook. Another good thing was that when I bought my LaserActive Sega pak, all the stores were clearancing all their Sega CD games, so I picked up titles like Keio Flying Squadron for $7.50 at Best Buy. Wish I'd have tried getting more RPGs rather than buying Rise of the Dragon for $2.

GREAT video. In the early 80s my grandad had a Laserdisc player he bought in Hong Kong, one of the original Pioneer models. He was a futuristic grandad. I remember he had Dragon's Lair, and one Easter me and my 3rd grade buddy and my cousin played it and our minds were blown that we were practically controlling a movie. My NES paled in comparison. What's so amazing is that so many people aren't aware that this technology existed as early as the 70s.

As bad as that system is shockingly there is systems that are worse and plus I find it hella funny that the disc are the size of a pizza tray 😂 btw you should play sometime rescue rangers with mike on your channel. btw again I'm happy to see you are dating mike because you two are very cool and nice people so when I seen you two got together I was happy for you 😃

Pyramid Patrol gives me a 3D Action 52 vibe, with its flying staplers- as-enemies randomness. All of these games have one thing in common: they're empty. It just looks like you're flying or driving through a bad CG movie. There's no interaction between the player and the environment, which makes it difficult to relate the two in your mind. You're painted on to a barren world and just told "SHOOT STUFF BECAUSE IT'S THERE."

That said, thankyou for showing us! I've certainly never heard of this system before.

It reminds me of early 90s FMV games like Nova Storm and Rebel Assault.

I bought a LaserActive about a decade ago for about $60. It came with the Genesis pack, the LaserActive branded remote control and 6-button Genesis controller. The guy even sent me all the original paperwork that came with it as well as the little pack port cover that goes on the front of the system. He shipped it all in a PC monitor box filled with tissue paper and packing peanuts. A couple of years back, I stumbled across two LaserActive LD games in the wild (Hyperion and Space Berserker) for $5 a pop at a local Half Price Books of all places. Good times!

New channel idea Erin Plays Mid 90's Japanese pseudo-porn games. Watch Erin get creeped out playing while Mike watches and laughs.

Hey Erin I subbed. You made me laugh more than a few times. I love the dry humor. I finally got my hands on this beast of a system recently. I couldn't disagree with you more about it though. The laser disc games are very secondary and gimmicky at best. Have you ever owned a sega cd? If you have you know the nightmare of multiple power plugs and the spiderweb of cords. You don't buy this system for LD games. You buy this console for Pc engine hu cards or Turbo grafx/discs and Sega genesis carts/Sega cds. This is the most versatile system simple and plain. I will be getting a hold of that racing game just for the fact you can drive through cakes.

Wonder if there is an analog control on one of the original laser active joysticks that is used for racing.
