I am a tree, a very old tree.
I store carbon since hundreds of years.
It is in my roots, in my wood and in my leaves.
Carbon - the essential element of life.
I use the sun to recover the energy I need.
The energy I needed to become this majestic
The energy I need to be alive
The energy I need to feed, host and attract life.
I am teeming with life, below ground and above ground
Communities of many different animal and plant species call me home
It takes centuries for these communities to establish
And I am glad to host them
I know you and your species for quite a while now
You wandered in my shadows
You have used my dead wood to heat you
You climbed up my stem to have a better look around the magnificent landscape I grow in
We lived together, harmonic and peaceful
Then, I heard the screams of my cousins when they did fall by your hand
One, two, ten, hundreds.
I felt the shutter when they hit the ground
You tracked them out of my woods
They were slowly dying, trying out.
Many species lost their home
I was spared. My luck? I grow at a place you can not easily reach with your machines
Quite recently, at least for me, I started to suffer from something else.
Heat, floods, droughts, more droughts, more heat, more floods.
I feel dizzy
I feel feverish
I feel sick
Not sure, how long I will keep on standing
How long I will be home for those many different species calling me home
When I fall, and I will, I feel it, despair will reign in the woods
And you? You may only be aware when plenty of us are gone.
Then it is too late
Our kind takes half a millennium to regrow
You might be long gone when a cousin grew back to my majestic size
When I perish, you will perish.
We are both part of the same system
Just a thought:
