A Liquid That Pours Itself! The Self-Siphoning Fluid: Polyethylene Glycol

- In this video I showcase a really neat high-molecular weight polymer that can self-siphon and pour itself our of a beaker. The reason it can do this is because it can be made to have a very high molecular weight. The solution I used had a MW of 1,000,000. The solution is basically like a molecular sized bowl of string or beads that pull each other out of the beaker once the initial pour has started. Polythylene Glycol is also used as a laxative. It is very slippery feeling like mucus and once it is on your hand it is tough to get off!

Thanks for your effort, it helped me get a "real world" feel for polyethylene glycol. It's a fascinating substance with so many uses, can thicken or thin fluids, disperse or conglomerate, stick things together or lubricate. Crazy wonderful stuff.
Would be interesting to mix with feromagnetic particles to create ferofluid with this properties. Or use ferofluid nanofibers instead of nanoparticles to achieve similar effects as this have.

According to OozingGoo, polyethylene glycol(AKA PEG) is what's used in making of water based mixture inside lava lamps :) Chlorinated wax flows in it. Speaking of which, it can be found in different forms depending on the volume.

this molecules ability to siphon efficiently has little to do with its molecular weight. it has to do with a strong dipole moment attracting a molecule in the fluid to molecules like itself. This is basically fluid viscosity. he explained fluid viscosity incorrectly. This fluid is also cool because it forms long colloid strands further intensifying the appearance that it is siphoning itself out. If I place liquid mercury in a cup, which has a much higher molecular weight, it doesn't siphon itself out.
Jacob Stewart. You are are right that the dipole moment is attracting neighboring molecules, but the longer the molecular chain is the total net force there is. For example water has a very strong dipole but it doesn't self siphon because the molecules are so short. So the high molecular weight is definitely not a wrong explanation.
Yeah I understand there is a lot more to molecular interactions than probably either of us have explained yet but, It felt like the video didn't do the explanation justice since you could still have high molecular weight to relatively low fluid viscosity saying that is the only trait that makes fluids good at siphoning doesnt seem like the correct place to start teaching people chemistry and if I gave just the answer in the video to my professor about a fluid flow problem I would be marked down.

So in theory would you be able to make a machine that powers itself? Such as a water wheel with a conveyor belt/ramp of sorts, replace the water with PG fill the base of it with PG and then start it up the belt/ramp. Once it starts to poor down onto the wheel in theory it would continuously pour itself forever, whilst creating unlimited free energy after setup?
