  • The impossibly small Olympus OM Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 for the OM 35mm film camera mount provides an affordable and pocketable wide-angle lens option for photographers. The lens' image character and performance, defined by sharpness that flatters subjects, contrast that deepens images taken in flat light, and flare that videographers can work into sci-fi scenes, work exceptionally well on still images with suitable performance under limited conditions for video work.
This video examines the Olympus OM Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 lens in detail and examines the lens' performance in real-world conditions. The sample images and video footage show how the lens performs, its limitations, strengths, and weaknesses.

Yes, there is a difference between the coating of MC lenses and the latest generation without MC, the latest generation reflects a mixture of green and blue, the MC reflects a more intense green. The optics are identical but the latest generation ones have better light transmission due to the different coating while the MC ones have better resistance to glare when used against backlight. The difference in transmission is very evident when you see the same photo taken manually (with the same parameters) side by side in lightroom

Spot on - great review. Love these solid little OM lenses. I use the 24mm black nose adapted to my Pen FT, along with the 50mm 1.8. I like that the half frame cuts the vignette wide open and uses the sweet spot😁

Oh nice! This would work very well on half-frame.

This is a really useful video, thanks for taking the time to discuss this lens in depth. I’ve been looking for a wider lens for my OM film cameras and a copy of this lens has popped up locally for sale.
I’ve never had a bad experience with the Zuiko lenses whether on film or digital vi adapter. The lenses are why I chose the Olympus system for film photography.

Hi ! I recently used this one on film, with 25 ISO B&W film... Let's say that "If you want detail... you got it !"

Oh yes! Some of the waterfall shots were taken on Adox CMS 20 II, I think, and it just really delivered.

I got the later black nose, Zuiko version. It is a marvel of optical design.

I've got a black nose h. zuiko that is one of the best performing lenses i own. I honestly love the rendering of mine over my final zuiko version of my 28mm. Of all the lenses I own it seems that the early black nose single coated versions of mine have less CA and seem slightly more contrasty and better performers than my multicoated ones (at least artistically). My 24 does some great work 😃. I also got a late mc 18mm a few weeks ago that I cant wait to get my film scans back on as well and see if it performs as well as my 24 does. I've also noticed that the different versions have some crazy bokeh and some have very buttery smooth. My 24s bokeh is quite crazy wide open but I love it's rendering, yours seems a bit more tame and smooth than mine.

Oh interesting, especially about the OOF area. I wonder if slight differences in lens element positioning, even just fractional millimeters, can affect that.

    Great review.
I love all my OM lenses (24/2.8, 28/2, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/2, 100/2.8, 35-70/4, 65-200/4), especially on my OM-1. I have the last version 24/2.8, and I sometimes use it as a “48mm” on my Olympus EM5.3. I would love to get the f2 version, but it’s now going for crazy money on eBay.

Thank you! Yeah, the secret of the old Zuiko lens' quality is out and prices on them are nuts. I tried to get a 40mm f/2 pancake and part-grade was going for $500 last I checked.

Great review. I just scored one paired with an OM-PC for $65 (shipped and taxed) and I'm pretty excited to get it forwarded from the States by my friend. It looks well taken care of and the ugly duckling OM-PC is also an easy flip in my local market and generally a great camera to have on you if your single digit OMs are in too nice of a condition to shoot when hiking.

Thanks for this review. I was actually looking to buy this lens and with your review I will definitely will need to buy the MC lens. Any plan to review the OM 21mn lens? I was also considering that one instead of the 24mm.

Thank you! I don't have immediate plans to buy any new gear unless I have to. I'm working on getting reviews made of the backlog that I have already.

Now seriously, I've bought that same (H black nose) lens variant some 25 years ago and it didn't disappoint, I use it both on film, FF and APS-c digital cameras, so I'll never sell it...

What do you think of the 24mm f2. I managed to get one for $80 but can''t find many reviews

    • @DavidHancock

Specs-wise, it's a good choice. I've never used that lens so I can't speak to how well it would perform. In general, fast vintage lenses were very well engineered. That said, is it as good as a modern, similar lens? Likely not, but if it's cheaper, it may make a lot of sense.

@@DavidHancock For some reason the Zuiko 24mm f/2 is actually kind of expensive. Do digital lenses work on film cameras?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว

@@GTXTi-db5xu That depends on the mount. A mirrorless lens will not work on film.
