- “You guys have all officially recorded in Leon Russell’s recording studio!”
Jimmy Webb is full of surprises! On March 10, 2022, he performed an intimate concert for The Church Studio’s Legacy Concert Series - a series of shows for an exclusive audience of 100 people in the Live Room. Part way through “Worst That Could Happen,” he spontaneously invited the audience to participate, and hilariously crafted a three-part harmony!
This song was written by Jimmy Webb and originally recorded by The 5th Dimension on their 1968 Magic Garden album. Like "MacArthur Park" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," Webb wrote the song about a love affair that he had with Suzy Horton. They parted ways when Horton moved from California to Nevada, where she became a casino showgirl. When Webb found out she had gotten married, he wrote "Worst That Could Happen," where he comes to terms with the news. He concludes that it's probably the best thing for her, even if it's the worst that could happen to him.
Lyrics:
Girl, I heard you're getting married
Heard you're getting married, this time you're really sure
And this is the end, they say you really mean it
This guy's the one that makes you feel so safe
So sane and so secure
And baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me
I'll never get married, never get married
You know that's not my scene
But a girl like you needs to be married
I've known all along you couldn't live forever in between
And baby, if he loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen to me
And girl, I don't really blame you
For having a dream of your own
Hey girl, I don't really blame you
A woman like you needs a house and a home, baby
If he really loves you more than me
Maybe it's the best thing
Maybe it's the best thing for you
But it's the worst that could happen
Oh girl, don't wanna get married
Girl, I'm never, never gonna marry, no no
No, it's the worst that could happen
The worst that could happen
Oh girl, the worst that could happen
Jimmy Webb, born and raised in Oklahoma, is the only artist in the world with grammy awards in music, lyrics, and orchestration. He has reached the top charts in numerous genres including rock, country, pop, hip hop, new age, rap, disco, and R&B. Due to writing some of the greatest songs in American history, including “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park,” and “Up, Up and Away,” he was the youngest person ever to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at age 40. Later, he not only became unanimously elected as chairman in 2011, but was also directly involved with Leon Russell himself being inducted into the hall of fame later that year.

There is something so heart-felt about this rendition that it brings tears to my eyes. Later, it becomes humorous, making Jimmy even more likable and approachable. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand; a masterful performance by one of our greatest song writers.
Right?! He did such a brilliant job of engaging with the crowd!
Wonderful, God Bless you Jimmy:-) Think I fell in love with your music after "McArthur Park" then when I found out you wrote this one for the Brooklyn Bridge I literally was just astounded, the modulations, and chords just keep building...too much almost for just one song...amazing....
Great memories of Jimmy Webb’s Ten Easy Pieces concert at the old Basement in Sydney. One of the best.
This is what art is all about. It cannot survive in a vacuum
I love Leon and everything that surrounded Leon...
Saw him a month back at the Catalina Jazz club on Sunset blvd..quite amazing guy..
You guys sound as good as Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge. Karl Sapulpa, OK
Jimmy was amazing indeed! The way he engaged the audience in the second half of this song was particularly mind-blowing!
Is there a full concert video available? Jimmy Webb is among the top 5 song writers of my generation!
We have the full concert, but we will not be able to put it all out there in one video. Stay tuned for more songs though.
@@TheChurchStudio Thank you
They are both from Oklahoma, but I've never ever heard Jimmy tell a story or some simple recollection of Leon and him together...they even moved out to California around the same time period as well. although Leon was in California a few years earlier, they must have hung out a bit, don't ya think? I dunno maybe they didn't hit it off all that much. This happens from time to time with folks that actually come from around the same area...in my experience living most of my life in the Northeast Ohio area....I'd say our 2 most popular pop artists were Eric Carmen and the late Michael Stanley, and from what I recall, they never ever played together on a gig, or even on the same billing. Cannot even recall either one of them talking about one another, and I just have to assume there was some friction between them. Of course I can be totally wrong, and just was not aware of other factors. Thanks Jimmy!!!

All of Jimmy Webb's songs are pretty awful - but this one certainly stands out as one of the very worst.
Thank you for your input. Unfortunately, it has been rejected as utter bullshit. Bye.
@johnhuwroberts7766 Not possible - because I had previously rejected Jim Webb as utter bullshit! Besides being "writer" of completely shitty songs he is a completely creepy person. Check him out in Wikipedia.
What are you on? You need to get off that prescription. It's ruined your aesthetic sensibilities.

I've read both his books. He's honest about his substance abuse. Is that creepy to you? Are you a songwriter? Who is at the top of your 'best songwriter' list?@@anthonypepitoneVideo
