Hi, I'd say it's optional for wall hangings since they just sit on a wall and don't fray as much. Whereas fringes on bags and keychains get moved and touched a lot, so I would do some kind of finishing like this on those😄

Where do you get your braided cord? I can't seem to find it in Australia. I can get braided cord but it's very stiff.

I supply cords in Canada and I am not sure what's the best option for you to get braided cords in Australia. But here are what I found on Google. It looks like both sites ship Australia wide.
