I heard their version as a kid. I discovered The La's when I was around 19 and they became my biggest musical obsession.
There are a dozen versions of this on TH-cam. This one is my favorite

Anyone who has experienced this would understand that the lyrics are perfectly applicable to that situation. The La's themselves deny that the song is about heroin, and their official music video also suggests that it is about a girl.
Sometimes people try to find "hidden" meanings to songs that aren't really there. There are certainly a lot of lines in this song that don't seem to make sense if it is about heroin.
But even if it could be about heroin, it could be that Sixpence chooses to interpret this song as about a girl.

+jtlbb2 We both agree that this is one awesome song but I must respectfully disagree with you when you say there are lines in the song that don't fit the heroin link. Every single line in this song could easily be applied to heroin. Have a look at the body language of Lee Mavers from the La's throughout their original clip. Does that look like a guy who's in love? Also take notice of the wink when he says "pulsing through my veins". Sixpence haven't interpreted this song to being about a girl either. Just look at the imagery and the dazed and confused looks throughout.

The La's are from my home town of Liverpool...They are the greatest band to come from my city since The Beatles... Unfortunately due to their recording standards no producer was able to meet their high recording requirements.
Only 1 album was ever made but make no mistake Lee Mavers made his mark on British music.
The most influential musician to come out of Liverpool since John and Paul.
