I imagine he can change how the whistle sounds in a sense. From it sounding like a horrific tune of the gruesome wait of death to a soft and gentle tune of it finally being the end but that it’s okay. Or something like that lol
I also love how the whistle is extended here. The whistle in the movie feels incomplete, like it cuts off in the middle before it truly ends. Here it sounds complete, full. Like it got its chance to play out to the end.
Well, Death in the Movie was pissed a Puss for thinking he was "Immortal" thats why he was so rough, now Puss knows he has limited lives, He accepts Death and Death takes him to his peace.

This made me feel something inside. How the whistle is softer, the solemn mood, Puss’s grief. The only thing missing was Kitty and Perrito either mourning him or waiting for him on the other side and you’d have had me BAWLING.
I think the best part of this is the whistle. In the movie it feels incomplete: as if it's been cut short before it could truly finish. Here, it feels full. As if it's finally been able to play it's tune to the end.
Which wonderfully correlates to how Death was going to cut Puss’s last life short in the movie, while here this is a natural end of Puss’s life. Beautiful story telling
It symbolizes how Puss never tried to live any of his lives out. Here since Puss lived his last life to the fullest, he accepted death was on the horizon due to age and accepted it. That’s why he heard the whole whistle here. Plus it sounded soothing more than intimidating.
I love how in the movie when Puss is running from death, his whistle sounds intimidating and is like a warning that the end is nigh, but here when Puss is accepting death it’s tranquil and peaceful, it’s beautiful

I like how they edited the whistle to include the 12th note. By not resolving the melody it hangs in the air leaving a sense of anticipation and anxiety. But when resolved it's much more calming. Like a lullaby. The nerd in me wants to say that you shouldn't hear the last note because that's when death takes you. But considering that death was expected in the comic I think it fits.
Fun fact: Death's whistle has its origin from a character from Venezuela and Colombia known as El Silbón. His whistle is a distinct melody in the form of C, D, E, F, G, A, B, high F, B. If it's loud he is far away, but if it's soft he is close and about to strike.
Over here it sounds more like “my time has come and I’m ready to go” instead of something you’d fear. If I lived to be 90 I would get a bottle of scotch and watch the sunset on last time before going to the afterlife.
Alright let me tell you how it *really* goes. The first few times we hear the whistle, it’s a G major triad followed by an A minor triad. After Puss defeats Death, the whistle changes up one pitch and only plays an A major triad.
DreamWorks couldn't portray death better, death is only an antagonist by definition, that Puss-in-boots is the protagonist. He's just death it's what it does, and I love when they portray the concept of death as being melancholy at worst and not a tragedy. Cheers to a life well lived.
I'd preferred if Puss decided to fight against Death even knowing that he can't defeat him, to mantain the promise that he made to him 17 years before (when he swear that he would never stop fighting for his life(
I would think Puss would want to go out with a bang to have one final fight. Another scenario I thought of Puss and Death going to a bar to have a drink before they leave.
To live 17 years as a legend, doing hero stuff, Puss had to fight every day, knowing he was on his last life. Then he feels old age catching up to him, and he knows that his time is almost up. What could Puss do? He already knew he couldn’t defeat Death, even though he said he wouldn’t stop fighting “for this life”. Death told Puss that they would meet again someday, and Puss understood that there would be nothing he can do to prevent it. So he greets Death knowing that he (Puss) had lived his life to the fullest
for me its that but more as a sign of respect to both parties. he know hes going to loose, hes frail, dying possible because of sickness or old age and knows his times up. hes done and he knows it but he also knows another thing death loves two things (besides fear) one is the acceptance of mortality/life and dying in peace, while the other is fighting for your life even if its futile. meaning hes rather going to go quitly into the night, or have one final honer duel where the goal is to last longer not win. but eather way puss is then going to greet Death as an old friend and walk with him gladly, departing this life, as equals.
Imo it's bittersweet. Cats don't live that long compared to humans. Puss is probably much older then we realize since he's lived 8 other lives. Senior cats don't have the same energy or nimbleness as their youthful counterparts. Knowing him, he probably kept adventuring into his old age but seeing as he now has respect for his last life, he may have decided to retire officially before being struck down. He didn't fight Death because he was ready to go, unlike in the movie where he wanted to stay to live his last life. The fact that Death came for Puss as (presumably) he retired his sword could be a mercy. Perrito and Kitty aren't in the comic and were what he was fighting for originally. Mayhaps they both met an earlier demise.... And Puss was ready to see them again. Death would grant his wish early instead of having him live alone in his seniority

a year before the movie i was actually whistling the same tune from time to time when i didn't feel well, i just remembered hearing it from somewhere, but I can't put my finger on it
You know, as touching as this is, I don't think Puss will ever stop fighting. I imagine Death will visit him over and over, every few years, and the two will duel, over and over and over. But one day, Puss will eventually lose that duel. He'll go down with his sword in his hand and a smile on his lips, knowing he lived a full life and fought Death until the very last second. And Death will be glad for the fights too; it's probably rare for him to ever find someone with the courage to stand up to him so confidently as Puss did. So often, he sees nothing but fear, and while he loves the fear and the hunt, he seems to respect Puss' determination in the end. I almost see them growing to enjoy one another as the years roll on, and his passing is like the fading embers of someone you know well and respect greatly.
I like how Calm Death is. Death only showed aggression and hatred specifically because Puss in Boots was an overly arrogant individual who didn't value any of his lives. Since Puss value his last life now, Death tone is rather *Calm.* It carries no aggression to it and I like it.
Not really, after all there are theories stating that he actually saved puss at their first encounter, so it's probable he never showed any form of hatred, just aggression. The theory is that death appears only when puss is/was about to die, so it's possible if death didn't stop puss from drinking, that glass would have killed him
giving the wolf's whistle an end gives the whole thing a sense of finality and closure, which as far as i know wasnt included in the pib movie. nice touch
Now that I think about it. I think Puss in Boots did truely die at the bar. Not referring to his 9 lives but his prideful other self. Death managed to change him to who he is later in the movie, in a way.
This reminds me of the laughing bull from cowboy bebop who said that if you fear death it will jump at you father them light but if you do not fear death it will cast it's gaze upon you gently and guide you to infinity
Most fanfics have it that Kitty died a few years prior . Definitely sad if Perrito already left. It all depends if the talking animals age like their species or they age a bit slower or have close to a human lifespan.
I can imagine that’s how it goes. Death’s sickle already has the ninth cat symbol on it showing that it was Puss’ time whether they fight or not. Afterwards Puss is just exhausted. He then asks for Death to bury him next to Kitty who I sadly think died a few years prior.

I’d like to think that when the day would come, Puss would challenge Death to one last duel. A duel he would lose, but one he was wanting for some time. And Death couldn’t agree more with those conditions.

well remember Death aka the Grim Reaper is not a evil being. he is supposed to be a friendly entity that accompanies the soon to be departed on the last leg of their journey. Death is treated nowadays as evil, where as if you look in the history books and lore in general about each societies Grim Reaper most if not all of them are protrayed as friendly.
My personal fan ending: (Puss as an old man lays in a bed coughing) Death: (Whistles his song) Puss: So, my time has finally come. Death: Yes, I don't normally ask such things, but....How was your life. Puss: Well, all things considered ( Puss look over and various pictures of him and kitty married with kittens and Perrito with puppies and a wife), I think I lived well. Death: Good to hear Puss: So, how does this work? Death: Just come with me Puss: Very well. *Puss starts coughing and slowly gets out of bed*. *Death begins walking out of the room with Puss but hears a sword being drawn* *Death looks back and sees Puss armed with his sword* *Death looks confused* Puss: I told you I wasn't going to stop fighting for my life. well remember Death aka the Grim Reaper is not a evil being. he is supposed to be a friendly entity that accompanies the soon to be departed on the last leg of their journey. Death is treated nowadays as evil, where as if you look in the history books and lore in general about each societies Grim Reaper most if not all of them are protrayed as friendly.

Puss: So, how does this work?

*Puss starts coughing and slowly gets out of bed*.
*Death begins walking out of the room with Puss but hears a sword being drawn*
*Death looks back and sees Puss armed with his sword*
