Interesting subject Jon, it would be interesting to see this comparison made with heavy game loads with larger shot. There have been Biodegradable plastic wads available for some time. Eley has just lunched their version calling it “Pro Eco Wad”.
Nothing more annoying than missing a clay you were sure you were on and seeing a load of confetti exit the muzzle. I am sure that on target fibre you get the random 'shredded wad' which ruins your pattern. Plastic is better for sure. If all grounds only allowed fibre and steel it would make it a level playing field.
Plastic wads generally have the shot contained in a plastic cup connected to the wad so the shot doesn’t touch the barrel walls. Does that make a difference? Also, they often have a ‘springy bit’ between the wad and shot ‘cup’. Does this reduce recoil compared with fibre wads or does it have some other function?
Hey jon, what price are those cartridges you used, I’ve never come across them here in Ireland. I usually pay between €5.50 and €6.50 per box, depending on brand and volume of course. Usually clever or Olympic blues
Jon excellent video as always but in today’s age when everyone is primarily using over bored barrels you should of ideally used an 18.6-18.7 bored shotgun
Hey there. I'm wondering if you have any steel shot alternatives for older barrels. Belive my winchester model 12 is a 1952 full choke. Could I ream the choke and shoot steel. Or use a non toxic soft metal? Thanks.
Comp ex Fibre gives excellent results in my old English Hammergun . Good in the tighter bored guns . I think all the Hull range are good quality loads for the money. Excellent to the point video's .
Great video. Very interesting when looking at fiber vs plastic wads. Jonny, do you know if fiber wads affect chamber pressure? Just curious as a re-loader.
Keith Hane. As myself a very experimental reloader i have loaded fibre over a plastic powder data and visa versa with absolutely no difference whatsoever in a cheddite case. Pressures may vary very slightly but nothing i have ever noticed. 22 Grains of Green Dot 32 grams of shot with either Fibre or plastic in my own humble opinion for sensible range shooting is unbeatable pattern wise. Oh and a fiocci 616 primer.or a Remington 209. To be honest in a shotgun CARTRIDGE primers are not really an issue. Again this is just my opinion. Be safe all the best mate.
@@manofkentcatapultsgunsando5069, Thank you very much for your information. Here in the States, I don't have much access to fiber wad shells (geographically speaking). I have been curious about reloading fiber wads myself. I am very drawn to their environmental friendly attributes. I will try your Green Dot suggestion, I am typically using Winchester Handicap and Universal. Thank you very much!
@@tgsoutdoors it will not be long till plastic wad will be banned along with plastic cases and every one should use fiber any and start to look to wards the paper case
@@benclay8689 Nothing more nostalgic than shooting the old paper cased cartridge. Just a bit of a bastard when they swell up in the damp and you have to hammer them in with the palm of your hand.😂
I'm going to have to buy some now to try them out but I think I'll definitely go for fibre. After all fibre does help to keep everything moving through nicely doesn't it?
Why would anyone use plastic wads these days.....forget performance, shedding plastic all over our countryside isn't doing our sport any favours....or the place we all love!!! Chris Packham is single handedly destroying our sport....why give him more ammunition? No pun intended!!
Nice to see you using the cheap to charming gun
Being a user of Comp X one ounce 7.5 on pigeons out to about 50 yards, I vouch for that combination. Hold true and they come down dead.

Saw the ProEco at the shooting show - would love to put them too the test

Comp-X is a brilliant cartridge, very soft shooting and patterns well for the money
@@tgsoutdoors very soft . And a 65mm case again top cartridge for the old guns that need a little TLC.
1:51 watch your head John. It was near miss. :(
Everyone knows, plastic is best but bad for the environment, fibre is fine for the environment but not as consistent

Honestly i don't know the answer to that - will look into it though

Anyone tried those dissolving wads from Eley?
I would use fiber anyway because it is better for the Countryside
I think at a clay ground they are acceptable, as they are in a contained environment. Dont use them out and about though.

Really good video.
Would love to see more comprehensive testing with high end cartridges and overbore barrels, etc.
Something i would love to do in due course
Fibre just don't work in over Bored barrels . Maybe usable up to 18.6 but even that's stretching it in cold weather
First! Btw love your vids
Very odd question Jon but what boots are they you're wearing?
Ariat Conquests
@@tgsoutdoors Just watched your review of them, they look lovely but I'm looking for more summery boots so 400g of thinsulate might be overkill
