"Wich Stand" is a song written by Brian Wilson in 1963, originally recorded by the studio-only group, The Survivors (Brian, Bob Norberg, Rich Peterson, and Dave Nowlen). The song wasn't released at the time, supposedly because it sounded too similar to The Beach Boys. Unfortunately, the master tape was lost during a move.
In the 1990s, Dave Nowlen recorded a demo of the song from memory. This version is based on that demo, with the addition of a recently discovered third verse, and my own reimagining of the backing track, some of the harmonies, and the guitar solo.
Due to the limited source material, training "Survivors" models seemed impossible. Therefore, I produced this version in the style of The Beach Boys circa mid-1963, loosely based on what the AFM contracts suggest the instrumentation might have been.
This rendition features new early 60's models of Mike, Carl, Dennis, and Brian.
Special thanks to Lee Dempsey, Jiggy, and Joshilyn for the inspiration!

My God, Dae Lims. Sometimes I think you're a magical wizard.
This sounds 100% legit
It’s AI so what do you expect? Although it’s the Good kind of AI.
@@skitcentral. odd comment? AI definitely doesn't always look or sound legit. Dae Lims just know his shit.
@@vincevirtuaI know, he’s a genius like Brian Wilson. But these AI voices are phenomenal.
@@skitcentral. AI also needs some proper directions :)
I love how in the last verse, Mike’s double tracks don’t perfectly match up, which was really common (and particularly noticeable on Shut Down).
We should keep more bands alive this way
Been driving and listening to this on repeat for weeks. It's a great example that shows what the technology can do with the understanding of it and the talent of a producer like Dae Lims. It's so good it's scary. 👏
This proves that The Beach Boys will definitely live forever.
You have no idea how badly I would like to hear this treatment for "oh lord" from the cocaine sessions.
beggars can't be choosers though; the Walk On By one you made was a lifelong dream come true.
cheers :)
Same
Oh lord in the style of beach boys 85?
Oh Lord would be amazing to hear
@@TheDLPVideos I’ve already asked a couple times, so I almost feel bad posting in this thread about it again… but yeah, that’s still number one on my list.
@@JohnKelly-hq4my oh no no no. In the style of late 70s Pacific Ocean Blue Dennis with late 70s Adult Child Bryan. Let’s keep the lin drums and 80s keyboards out of this. 😅
I'm reliving the first time I heard the Beach Boys here!
The quality of this is absolutely incredible. Such a beautiful thing hearing these ultra clean ai voices with the soul of the 60's.
#1 HIT on TH-cam Hot 100!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has wondered and searched for this song. Had no idea Dave Nowlen recorded a demo - always thought he just remembered the lyrics.
We need to thank Dave Nowlen for putting a drum machine / Casio keyboard demo on tape to preserve the song.
@@LeeDempseyhey Lee, admired your work for a while. Was this demo recorded recently?
@@jerichotaetz Back in the '90s from what I understand. So it's not a vintage demo.
@@LeeDempseysweet I found a Kay Bank car related demo called “2+2” the other day. Always on the look out!
This is just magic.
Used to go to the Wich Stand as a kid. Great memories.
Man alive! I thought you were dead!!
Anyway, Dae Lims is the Godfather of A.I. music here on TH-cam. He was the first I found and everyone else seemed to follow in my eyes.
I would LOVE to see the Beach Boys cover of "She's Leaving Home" back up, but be that as it may...
Great Job!
This is now one of my favorites.
More excellence from Dae Lims. I am imagining that the Wich Stand is right across the street from the A&W
This one is INCREDIBLE! Thank you for giving us another chance to listen to new 60s Beach Boys material that has never been!
Sounds great! I think if you made Dennis' harmony a little off key it would sound 100% legit!
Absolutely extraordinary! Thank you. You should be given the job of totally overhauling the Beach Boys catalog, working from the original tapes in the vault - not replacing the originals but providing an alternative. It would reinvigorate sales for a new audience in a way that marketing yet more "remasters" couldn't touch.
(And please consider giving us Van Dyke Parks' work of genius "Song Cycle" as sung by the Beach Boys!)
I've been looking for some version of this tune for years - I had no idea Dave Nowlen had even recorded a demo, so this is a delightful surprise that comes out of the clear blue sky!! Thanks as usual, Dae Lims!
This was…UNEXPECTEDLY AMAZING!!! I didn’t expect this to be uploaded.
Loved the inclusion of the Pom, Pom Play Girl handclaps. Kinda makes the cheerleaders wanna shake their Pom Poms around and go out to eat after the big game.
Nice work Dae, You will never ever ever ever EVER disappoint us!
This one is truly excellent, one of your best. This song has been a white whale for me for many years, as I longed to hear it played in any form. I think I had heard about a Nowlen demo, but I certainly haven't heard anything. This recreation sounds so authentic, and it fills a hole I never thought would be filled. Thank you so much!
Your work is obviously getting better as you go, so it makes me wonder: have you considered going back to some of your earlier tracks and redoing them at all with your new models? In particular, I would love to hear Surf City or Thank Him redone - those could sit alongside 'Wich Stand on a reimagined Surfer Girl album quite nicely.
dennis version of a day in the life of a tree would be fire
Dae Lims - Have you ever thought about doing a completed version of “Can’t Wait Too Long?” That’s always been a fun one that is sort of the transition from SMiLE to Wild Honey. It’s a shame they never finished it!
I believe he’s said there’s just not enough source material to complete it; he would have to write most of it himself.
I reckon it was finished = th-cam.com/video/LEOXcOqrIYc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6N-KtYq5pH5zFtBn
I'd love to hear "Girl Don't Tell Me" featuring either John Lennon or Paul McCartney circa 1965 vocals. Brian has said he wrote the song to sound like a Beatles tune and even considered giving it to them.
Just listen to "Ticket To Ride" by the Beatles...
This is a nice follow up to thank him
@@chavinchacon5517 or maybe this should be the A side and Thank Him as the B side.
Fast Tempo then Slow Tempo.
@@skitcentral. Yeah
Absolutely amazing! I'll never understand how this devil technology works. Simply blown away!
I'm blown away! Obviously by the track itself, but the description and all that went into creating this. The research, the history, and the parts you inserted yourself as an artistic choice.
Absolutely fabulous!
Dae Lims - you’ve outdone yourself once again!!!
This is insane
now known as simply wholesome, a los angeles staple!
This is brilliant-and the backstory is the stuff of legend. Well done.
Hey, a while back you posted a Beach Boys AI version of "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" by the Beatles. I had it recorded as an MP3 but I had to reset my phone. But now it's removed on TH-cam. I loved that rendition. Do you think you could send it to me through email? I will not be posting it anywhere or sharing it. I just really love that AI version.
Fantastic.
Keep 'em coming Mr. Dae Lims!!!
Terrific as always. Brian was sure giving that pencil a workout on the snare drum.
Missed you Dae! Incredible work!!!
Unbelievable this is amazing
You're amazing! Dae Lims makes the only AI music worth listening to.
This is absolutely amazing Dae! Keep it up!
😱 wow!!! This is brilliant !👌🏻👍🏻
Another suggestion that I've thought about recently: 1980 Carl Wilson singing "Sailing" by Christopher Cross.
Duuuuuuuuude! Thank you so much, you're a star!
Dang this made me hungry for a sandwich to eat at the beach in my car. Awesome!
Another winner! Please keep 'em coming.
Worth waiting for a while ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Authentic! Well done!
Dude please just do the whole Love You album. Everbody's waiting for this. Do it FIRST!!!!
We are through the Looking Glass.
Great job again! I was just thinking, if it interests you, a Frank Sinatra version of "Still I Dream of It" would be cool to hear. Brian wrote the song for Frank and even sent it to him, but never heard back (surprise, surprise).
Pretty dang cool...........
Amazing
love it! thank you
Excellent work as always!
My own speculation, but some other reasons why Capitol may not have been interested in the Survivors’ version of “Wich Stand”:
1) The Wich Stand was a local institution in Los Angeles, and people in radio markets outside of Southern California would have clueless as to what a “Wich Stand” was.
2) Name-dropping the A&W Root Beer Stand restaurant chain would have been a product placement that was likely against Capitol’s policy.
3) The line “we can get eight in this car” is dangerously close to an old double-entendre joke, where a group of four guys would pull up to four girls and say “hey would you like to get ‘eight’ in this car?” (“eight” being a homonym for “ate”, being slang for the past participle “eaten”, meaning, well, you can figure it out…).
Awesome
You should finish “Sweet and Bitter” from the Surf’s Up / Sunflower sessions! One of my favorites that never got the credit or chance it deserved
Beautiful job
Fantastic!
Love it!!! Fantastic!
This is wonderful!! Thank you for creating this for us!
Good work man, downloading this
You knocked the Mike voice model out of the park.
Yeah yeah. Nobody likes Mike. But his voice is so important to the early Beach Boys sound.
Brian sounds awesome, as always!
Hey Dae, you did such an amazing job mixing "All I Wanna Do". I recently got the Sunflower album and was stunned to hear the difference in that mix compared with yours. I know you love Sunflower, have you ever thought about remixing it?
Great work as always Dae Lims! I was wondering if you still do breakdown livestreams or just videos, because I would love to see some of your new songs broken down for us.
really nice job
Spectacular. Truly. Like everything you do. Thank you!
I have an odd request... could you make an AI cover of the 1960s Beach Boys singing the state song "I Love You California?"
👍🏻
Amazing work as always Dae!!! Have you considered doing a take of the "fast version" of Surfer Girl?? Those lyrics fit over Surfers Rule quite nicely, in fact I believe they were originally meant for that track specifically
honestly, this is great! now, i'd love to see you tackle never learn not to love with the original mansion lyrics. the idea actually seems a bit interesting to me.
When another Beatle song?;( you´re the best
Wonderful. Please please can we get a McCartney arrangement and vocals for Alone Again Naturally?
Dude the fact that this is possible is so cool. Does this song have a drum or vocal performance taken from any other beach boys song? It’s sounding so familiar but I can’t place it
Sounds like 409, shut down and little old lady
Look at the description
@@Tommy-TwigFanoh yeah 😅 that was the one part I missed haha
Pretty impressive! How do you go about making the instrumentation? Is that made from A.I. as well?
I have a suggestion.. Could you make a Beach Boys AI cover of "This I Swear" by the Skyliners .. I think it would work SO well.. thank you!
Where can I hear Dave Nowlen’s original demo of this song?
You need to attempt bringing on the Who's Lifehouse using Pete Townshend's demos as the basis for the missing Who tracks.
You should do an early version of I Get Around with Brian's original lyrics.
Have you considered training models on the guitar and drum parts of the originals
Scary
The wich stand!
Any idea where I can find the Dave Nowlen demo?
Not in circulation. It's not vintage -- it's Dave and a drum machine and a '90s Casio keyboard just trying to get something on tape for posterity.
@@LeeDempseyWhat would be the best way to try to access it despite lack of circulation?
Beach Girl apparently uses the melody from A Joy Ride Cruise, which the Survivors were also set to record. th-cam.com/video/A5rUMVE-s3Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Cq_VAVg0LSPsnKkv
When’s your next video coming?
Are the drums real?
Any chances of getting downloads to your remixes/edits? I desperately need that Hot Street ai remix in flac or Wav TERRIBLY!
