    Hey Everyone!
    Here is a what we eat in a week for the last'ish week of our 6 week grocery span.
    This is when I try and get creative with what is left, inventory my fridges and freezers to make sure everything gets used and assess what we might need to buy more of in the next shopping trip.
    Lots of sourdough this week as well, doing a sourdough video but also using what we have :)

      Heh, one of the downfalls of a gas stovetop! The pan is too hot to hold and you can’t risk tea towels or anything! I totally should have done it in the thermomix but I fell back on old habits lol and thought about it after having to swap hands over and over again!

      The rooster with his wonky chortle kept trying to make his presence known 😂😂😂. Maybe we need a day in the life of the 🐔 video? 😂 Food looks amazing. Will try corn on a pizza in the future. Is corn on the cob readily available in the shops? August is the season for fresh 🌽 here. Typically eat as many cobs as I can during that month, then back to frozen or canned corn for the rest of the year.

    I dont get out of my PJ's until lunch time every day, morning chores always done in my gumboots, warm PJ's and robe. Its too cold down here in Tassie to get out of warm PJ's that early 🤣 Looking forward to your sourdough starter week, I feel very intimidate by sourdough but my partner keeps begging me to give it a shot. I'm on a fairly low fibre diet (long story short, my intestines dont work at full function so I can only digest about 12-16g of fibre a day) and everything I read online and in books talks about wholemeal or rye flour and I just cant see me being able to eat it if thats what I have to use to make my dough but you said in the podcast you only use regular flour so now I HAVE to give that a shot, and if worse comes to worse and I cant get it to work I havent wasted much flour and water. Certainly better than buying 1kg of flour I cant even eat and wasting a bunch of it trying to get a starter going 😅
    The price of meat is so crazy right now, we normally buy a whole side of chuck (6-8kg, cheapest cut) every 6 months and we butcher it ourselves into roasts/stew meat or (mostly) extra lean mince. We got some in September for $13.99/kg, we were down to our last mince about 1-2 months ago so I called the butcher to ask the price and it was up to $14.99/kg 😱 but we decided to wait and eat through the lamb, pork and chicken in the deep freezer first to get us through another month and to clean the deep freezer out and I just bought 2 whole chucks at $15.55/kg and I was SHOCKED! Still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying mince ($16.99/kg) and roasts ($18/kg) and pre diced chuck at a whopping $26/kg!! I spoke to our butcher about the price increase and he actually said (and showed me) the price of chuck he sells (at a standard size you'd get at woolie/coles, about 1.5-2kg) was actually $16/kg but because he doesnt do any prepping of ours except to literally cut it off the cow he sells it to us cheaper!
    I dont know how people are doing it honestly, if we didnt live in cattle and farming region and have farm fresh produce, meat and dairy right at our doorstep I dont think we would be eating very well in terms of quality and quantity. It just wouldn't be feasible, seeing what others around the country are paying, and even walking into the local woolies and seeing the price of produce and meat is shocking! Our nearest veg stand had caulis for $2 each and they were HUGE, and woolies had these coffee mug sized ones for bloody $6 each! We have decided that the last half of this year we are going to increase our own food production and limit even more what we get at woolies and buy only local produce of what we cant grow ourselves (or cant grow enough of), even if it means missing out on things that woolies has in stock that we cant get here...
    Hoping you find some good deals in your grocery shop, a lot changes in 6 weeks and we do find bulk food shopping much cheaper but its still crazy expensive right now!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, I definitely don't use specialty flours, I love them, and sometimes the change in flavour and texture they can give bread is amazing, but for the quantity of flour we go through, I just can't. I have even been using plain flour all this week because I ran out of bakers lol, other than altering the quantities a bit (plan flour needs a little less water) it has worked perfectly!
      Meat is so expensive, I'm glad that I manage to make my mince and pork stretch and into lots of different meals, so we eat those cheap cuts A LOT but I make them work in so many ways it doesn't always feel like we're eating the same thing!
      I am very grateful for my F&V man! I am so happy that he is happy to sell me stuff by the box!
      Everything is so expensive, I have tried to put extra into the budget this month to get us a little ahead.

    I am the only one who eats corn. Have some of those tiny cans just for me. I haven't tried it on pizza as yet. Your doing well with the low veg situation. This is when you appreciate having frozen or processed veg content in reserve. I concur with your realization re costs and eating into larger quantities of reserves. I think I said it last time before your shop - can't believe it's that time again. Having not bought much meat my last big shop, I subsequently got a lot of mince later on and so it became a craving item to cook up. Shepherds pie the big favourite. The order is in for tonight already = spag bol. I too put heaps of vegies in both meals. The weather has turned really cold and foggy mornings are the go. Frosts around the corner. Time coming up for lots of soups etc. I was just talking about lentils yesterday and to make some meals up with them and you had them in your mince! Love the rooster. He just wants to be with you. Got a 1/2 cubic metre of garden soil from landscape supplier and busy getting out of trailer onto garden beds and dug in with manure, as well as topping up some pots etc. It cost $44. I think it was $36 or $38 the year before last. I know it's nearly winter when I come in from working outside, need a shower to get warm and put on pj's early.

      We were commenting last night that dinner was done and everyone showered and in pyjamas by 7.30pm lol, so early! That quick change in weather! :D
      I am hoping I can get my silverbeet to flourish, it doesn't mind cold weather and my kale and then I'll have these greens to add in as well and it will make me feel better about the lack of fresh veg but also good for us!

So on a day I was feeling ok I made 4 small loaves. My son said it was ok and I thought it was delicious. He loves banana bread. Anyway, the next morning I was going to put the other 3 in the freezer and went to get my 2nd piece of the bread and low and behold the loaf was gone. Hmmmm. My son said he was in the mood for sweets so....... We have cookies (which I don't care for), his flavor of ice cream, cinnamon bread and what does he eat? Must've been good. Another great video Nyssa. Watching these videos has inspired me to do a very low spend grocery month. I actually think that I can keep the budget to $30 for the month as the freezer is full and the pantry shelves look good (spent the last week organizing the shelves better and the freezer before my upcoming surgery). Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get my raised beds planted with seeds for fresh salads and carrots. The weather has been wild so I will not be able to plant peas until the fall now. Good luck with your winter crop and I am sending out good vibes for when spring hits you again.

      My cousin was visiting from interstate and sleeping in the loungeroom so I didn't hear him get up for a midnight fridge raid. I got no problems with that. In the morning he told me he (25 years old) couldn't find anything to eat because my fridge and freezer were full of ingredients, no food.

    Hi Nyssa🥰 I need to catch up on your videos, I’ve been super busy. Wow you would already be in Brissy on the shopping trip by now but I hope you remember that you said you needed onions. Yes I’m noticing the price rises too but doesn’t seem to be as bad for raw ingredients. Enjoy time with your mum 🥰

    Was there a hamper during this 6 week period? You are so good at planning and making sure your meals come together. ( making all the doughs the night before).

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it was early, they are about every 4 and the shopping every 6, sometimes the timing is not superb. I shop this week, and the hamper is in a fortnight, not ideal!

    I’m fascinated by the zucchini butter - as a pasta sauce would you pair it with a meat? Pizzas look delicious - you make such amazing food!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We've done it with chicken, I'm not sure that it would complement beef, maybe lamb, its heavy on the woody green herbs, but then again, you could use whatever herbs you wanted, I have sage, rosemary and Thyme generally in the garden, so I tend to use those, which are nice with chicken! Bacon is always nice with Zucchini too :D

      I think it was a Carls Bad Cravings recipe I saw it on first, years ago - there's a tiktok or something going around with it now though I believe, but I put a lot more veg etc into mine and make it a heartier soup, its so tasty.

    Love you videos! have you tired sloppy joes? What about macaroni salad or potato salad?

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sloppy Joes are on the list to try this month! We haven't had them before, but I don't see why the kids wouldn't like them! We do potato salad in summer normally, not so much in the cooler months, and I don't generally make cold pasta salads, but the kids do like the pesto pasta salad cold the next day, so they might like it!

    • @OurSmallFootprint

      I think its affecting my quantities, but slowly, so that while we're still managing it is showing up after a few months rather than right away, the backup is getting eaten away kinda thing.

I like to put my shoes on in the morning and have them on all day, better for my back and with the kitchen outside etc, but I wear clodhopper shoes so I tend to get dressed because I don’t want to take them on and off heh. I might need to buy myself some new slippers!
