    Frank Whittle was the first who think about the jet engine but Hans von Ohain was the first who build it (with some tricks to get more time) but both got the recognition for invention it because they did it independently from each other

      Actually Henri Coandă was the first to come with such a concept in 1910, though it's not clear if ever got airborne.

    • @pricelesshistory
      @pricelesshistory 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Neither Frank Whittle, nor Hans von Ohain, or Henri Coandă or Secondo Campini. The idea of "reaction engines" exited 2000 years earlier in Greece. The key innovation was that both Frank Whittle (first) and Hans von Ohain (second, independently) were able to harness a little of the exhaust energy to drive an intake fan, the turbo-jet engine (Germans were in first all jet flying aircraft, followed by UK).

    It is important to note that while Frank Whittle first had the idea, the German jet development was independent from it because it was kept under tight locks by the military and Hans Papst von Ohain came to a very similar conclusion on how to power modern planes in the early 30s without knowing of Whittle's work. Part of the reason why German jet engines are notably different in design, they are axial to the British radial variant.
    The US never equipped Sabres with Missiles, only export versions got them as the US had already moved on to more modern planes or planned to. The first use of Sidewinders was by Taiwanese Sabres in a conflict with PRC China.

  • @bigsmoke-mi5cw
    @bigsmoke-mi5cw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    this one I read but haven't confirmed yet by comparing to other aircraft at the time, is that the Bristol beaufighter was the first plane designed with RADAR in mind or one of the variants were designed with RADAR installation as apart of the base design instead of something added later on.

    1:35 I beg to differ. The first jet engine was invented as far as 2000 years ago. You know that guy Hero from Alexandria, and his invention called Hero's engine? That's technically the first jet engine in existence. But ok, we're talking modern jet engines here. So the first modern(ish) jet engine was built in 1910 by that guy called Coanda (also known for the discovery of "Coanda effect"). It was primitive, the compressor was powered by an ordinary piston engine, but it was the first airborne jet engine. And the first patent for an aircraft jet engine was granted to Maxime Guillaume in 1921. So Whittle wasn't the first to think about aircraft jet engine, wasn't even first to build it. Yes, he did a lot to improve the design and i'm not denying it, but to say he invented the jet engine is quite an overstatement.

    Just a side note here on the Sabre. The F-86 was easily able to break Mach 1 in a dive. The importance of the F-100 Super Sabre was being able to break the sound barrier in level flight.
    I've read arguments (Sourced from the Smithsonian Air and Space Magazine) that indicated George Welch to be the first Supersonic pilot, before Chuck Yeager, in the F-86 prototype. Whether he actually did or not is not clear, and will probably be forever a mystery.

    First ALL METAL aircraft (excluding control surfaces), THAT is the most important breakthrough of all. More streamlined, more durable, and would not rot and turn into compost in 2 years. It was only in early 1930's mass production of all metal aircraft was possible. In game the first built is most likely the French Dewoitine D.371.

    Even if the breaktroughs are old or seem insignificant today, some pre-World-War-2 aircraft designs made a huge impact for history and aircraft development. Like the first dive bombers to G-lock in a dive, or the first "dumb" rocket air kill, which I believe goes to USSR against Japanese bombers.
    We also have one of the first gunship helicopters, UH-1 "Huey", which lead to the development of one of the first dedicated attack helicopters, AH-1 Cobra.

    I think the X4 deserves a little more credit. Especially when you elaborate on how you decided to include the aircraft you did, ie. produced en masse and designed for that purpose. The X4 certainly checks both of those boxes. Saying it wasn't "operational" is really nitpicky and (possibly false depending on how you categorize firing "tests" at enemy aircraft) is usually only brought up when two designs enter service at similar times. In this case, there is almost a decade between the two.

    This is why I consider Argentine military tech tree a good option for war thunder.
    The list below is made by me from my humble knowledge considering aircraft and tanks that
    are innovation for the video game and others that are already created. Added to this list,
    Argentina would integrate well the list of countries due to its conflict over the Malvinas Islands
    with Great Britain and because it did not add maps of it to the game. Argentine aeronautical
    history is highly respected throughout the world and it proved its ability when it had to.
    Of course I may have forgotten about other military instruments that may be suitable for the
    game.

    As far as additional firsts to consider, there's the first all-metal carrier borne aircraft of the A5M, while not as glamorous, I believe certainly worth noting for showcasing the global trend towards more advanced carrier aircraft.
