I think older Royal Caribbean ships should have an office or booth on board where guests can borrow approved USB extenders for free. Guests could return them by bringing them back to the office or leaving them in their cabins. If they keep them, they would be charged for them since their SeaPass card is linked to the USB extender they borrowed.
Dear Royal Caribbean. Either update your older ships with more outlets. Or let us bring safe outlet extenders on board. Your guests need the consideration.
I recently cruised with a friend on Liberty of the Seas. Between the 2 of us we had 3 medical devices with only 2 outlets in the room. Before starting to pack, I reviewed the no-no list and saw nothing about multi plug adapters. We brought multi plug adapters and a multiplug extension cord (all without surge protectors) all of them were confiscated from our luggage. We spent the first night playing switch-a-roo with plugs to the different medical devices. Needless to say we were unable to charge any electronics because there were no USB ports in our cabin. Fortunately, after complaining they returned our adapters and extension cords saving us from 8 nights of outlet swapping. Royal needs to keep in mind some passengers have more than 2 pieces of medical equipment needing electricity.
Medical device needs (CPAP, nebulizer, scooter, etc.) qualify you for accessibility accommodations. Fill out the Special needs request form and they will put a multi plug extension cord in your stateroomf for your use.
Matt there has been clarification that an Adaptor that has a single power outlet plus a USB port is ok. Whats not ok is Multiple 120/240 power outlets.
Here's the thing though, whether its a single or multiple-plug adapter doesn't really matter. It's that people overload them beyond their rated wattage (the dual plug adapter shown is about 1800 watts, the single adapter might be, say 1500 watts). People just need to read instructions and labels on outlets and adapters and NOT overload them. I t's possible to overload the single plug adapter as well and cause a fire. But at the same time, if this is their concern (overloading and fires) then they should probably update their ship with adequate breakers that pop when too much current goes through outlets (they probably do, but then they need to make it clear to guests that the outlets for example can only handle say up to 1000W or 1500W max per outlet.) The adapter isn't really the problem here, it's people not reading/following directions. I've used those adapters a lot in Europe and NEVER had an issue, but I also never overloaded them (the most I put on one was maybe 500W with my laptop, a tablet and two phones) but it and the wall socket was rated for some 1500W. I also made a point to unplug it when I wasn't there to reduce the risk of fire as well. So that may also be an issue -- people leaving them plugged in, possibly with devices plugged in, while not in the room, and it creates a potential fire hazard, but again, that's not specific to a dual-plug designed adapter.

The issue with these devices is not the device itself, but that people plug in too much stuff into them and dont read the instructions, thus probably overloading the socket (and the adapter) and creating a fire hazard. So I don't think the fact it has 2 ports versus 1 port matters much, other than they may view that as a way of preventing people from overloading the sockets in the room, which may be the issue, but then they should state that, or say explicitly that the outlets in the room can only handle, say 500W per outlet. Most properly wired outlets (on a board or in a building) should have breakers that pop once the max rated current is reached. If that's not happening, then perhaps they need to look into the wiring of the ship and update it if necessary (I'm not sure if maritime regulations are different than regular building codes since ships tend to generate their own power onboard versus getting it from a landlined source but I doubt the fact that it has 2 plus versus 1 greatly reduces the risk. You can still plug in a high-wattage appliance into a single out and create a fire hazard).
I bet that the electrical distribution breaker panel on an older ship had issues due to extra current draw that the ship was not designed to handle because of power strips
There is literally no reason for this ban, as an marine electrician I can confirm there is no directive banning these items, this is Royal Caribbean and I don’t understand why or what the justification for it is

The problem isn't simple solved by adding "more" outlets. We often cruise on The Radiance in Alaska and my mom may be using a cpap machine the next time. We always book an accessible cabin, 2023 on the Radiance, and the closest outlets to the bed are across the room. Because the room is wheelchair and scooter friendly, that puts the outlets about 20' or more from the bedside table. Will RCL have something available to work in this case?
Medical device needs (CPAP, nebulizer, scooter, etc.) qualify you for accessibility accommodations. Fill out the Special needs request form and request an extension cord and they will put a multi-plug extension cord in your stateroom for your use.
It makes zero sense to ban 1 to 1 plug adaptors because they don't add any additional sockets to the room. On my cruise on Icon a few weeks ago my US to UK (single plug) adapter was not questioned but I know of someone 2 weeks ago who was told they could not use a similar device. As is common with Royal - they make policy changes and then don't communicate them properly - so each staff member from head office right to room attendants has a different view on what the rules actually are.
They are NOT banning travel adapters, only multi outlet adapters, i.e. USB and travel adapter combined. Don't blame them. I got a shock off a Chinese piece of junk I purchased from Amazon, now been pulled from Amazon for safety issues, after complaints.
I was literally just on Liberty of the Seas and had one of those multi-plug adapters by Cruise On. They didn’t take it nor said anything about it while it was plugged in the room 🤷🏻
Hey Matt, you showed in the video a EU adapter that had one US outlet as well as one USB A and one USB C giving the impression that it is banned. Since it only has one US outlet and is not a multiplug, wouldn't it then be ok? Plus the EU adapter is what we use when cruising out of Europe with either a pre or post cruise stay at an accomodation. Without that EU adapter we can't charge our devices. This is quite confusing.
My husband had a cigar cutter confiscated because it LOOKED like a bullet. It had the shape of a bullet, I guess. When he was called down and told it would be taken away, he showed the security officers what it was. They were impressed and passed it around. It didn't matter that it wasn't a bullet. Lesson learned.
We just got off the Serenade, today, and they have added 2 USB plugs to the interior staterooms by the lamps. I assume they are also in other staterooms, but we didn't stay in the others. With those USB plugs were also 2 more European plugs, if people have adapters. I assume this was added for the Ultimate World Cruise and the other Radiance class ships did not get the upgrade, but I don't know that for sure, I may be lying.
Would love to see what they would say now about the travel adapter, I purchased on the ship, that has an outlet and two USB sockets. Granted it was just a couple of years ago, RCL know how to scam you when you forget your travel adapter, was damn expensive nearly triple the price that was on Amazon. It was made in USA product, not Chinese junk.
The problem with the policy is if you are traveling abroad and take a converter with you and now you have it but it's not allowed on the ship am I supposed to just throw it away? If you are on an older ship with only two plugs and no USB ports how do I charge my devices? What is the point of the wifi package if we can't charge our devices?
Hey Matt does this include the power strips that plug in and have a cord? Not a power strip with a serge button. Just a block with a cord and several plugs
What about Cruisers from other countries, im from Australia and will be on a royal cruise early next year. Normally i take a USA travel plug so i can plug my AUS devices into it, but will that no longer be allowed?
I'm spending a week before and two after my next cruise, in Europe. So, if they take my multi plug outlets/charging station, I will get it back at the end of the cruise? How does that work? Is it delivered to my room or do I have to go locate my item among the multitude of others that were taken? And when does this happen? After we disembark? The night before? Thank you for your replies
A RC cruise might be only an aspect of a bigger vacation. We're using a RC cruise as a relaxing method of transportation to get to our final vacation destination. I want my adapter multi plug to use on the rest of our trip. I'm happy to not use it on the ship but I wish they were more accommodating to travelers and realize we may need items after our cruise. I don't want to repurchase an item I already own once we get to our destination, especially since I purchased this item specifically for that trip. I hope RC considers holding plugs for travelers if they continue this ban.
I'm from Australia and need an adapter so I can use my appliances. The one I have also has usb ports as well as a socket to plug in my Australian appliances. I took it on my last royal caribbean cruise. Are they still permissible?
Pack your UL-approved multi-plug in your suitcase and I highly doubt they will confiscate it. In the unlikely event your multi-plug is confiscated, you can pick it up when you leave.
I am confused. I have European adapters that have one outlet and then two USB outlets, is this no longer allowed? I go on Harmony in 8 days, do I need to remove these?

So the question I still have is, are we able to bring a converter plug from Euro to NA outlet? For example, so convert a single plug euro to a single plug north american plug.
I saw someone ask RC and they said yes. It’s when it splits it into more than one non-usb outlet. It’s ultimately a load capacity thing. multiple USBs won’t overload the system but multiple plugs will.

It make sense. If a room is only rated for a certain number of items to be running at once, but everyone is using 3 or 4 more items, then a system overload could happen.
Funny how this coincides with the Icon issues.
More plugs equals more devices...imagine all those plugs with multi adaptors attached. There could be a major issue!
I was literally just on Liberty of the Seas and had one of those multi-plug adapters by Cruise On. They didn’t take it nor said anything about it while it was plugged in the room 🤷🏻
Thanks for sharing!
hi, was the freedom video from last week?
i was in that ship in fort lauderdale, just to say lol
Just got off a rc cruise this week i brought 2 of the outlet plugs no issues at all
Hey Matt, you showed in the video a EU adapter that had one US outlet as well as one USB A and one USB C giving the impression that it is banned. Since it only has one US outlet and is not a multiplug, wouldn't it then be ok? Plus the EU adapter is what we use when cruising out of Europe with either a pre or post cruise stay at an accomodation. Without that EU adapter we can't charge our devices. This is quite confusing.
My understanding is adapters are allowed. So if it’s 1 EU to 1 NA plug, it’s allowed. But it if has 2+ NA plugs it is prohibited.
Standard travel adapters are allowed, NOT multi adapters, I.E. EURO PLUG TO NA SOCKET AND USB, are now banned.
Sailing on Sunday and bringing 3 power banks!
The converter I linked to has also usb plugs, in addition to the single outlet. I think practically speaking it would work well
I must've just made it because we were just on allure 2 weeks ago with a multi outlet plug with no issues.
She said you should have the time cause you don't go nowhere 😂😂😂
About time!
Hey Matt does this include the power strips that plug in and have a cord? Not a power strip with a serge button. Just a block with a cord and several plugs
I believe it’s all about the bloggers they have so many devices
i have a non surge power strip an its in my bag as we are on our way to a cruise tomorrow
Matt, do you know if the EU plugs are 110 volt, or will we need to bring a converter?
I only bring my phine and curling iron..when I am on vac I try and disconnect..no internet pkg either
Keep us safe. Thanks Royal
What about Cruisers from other countries, im from Australia and will be on a royal cruise early next year. Normally i take a USA travel plug so i can plug my AUS devices into it, but will that no longer be allowed?
So i guess the adapter with a cord, and 3 plugs i bought and used on my last cruise is banned (its not a power strip)
I have a question. What workers onboard the ships have access to a gun if needed?
If you pack a plastic multi plug device in your checked luggage will they spot it when they xray luggage?
That is essentially what they do. They don't throw the items away but hold them for you until disembarkment.
@@JoyceNeill that gives me relief. Thank you!
It’ll get confiscated if put in checked luggage. There’s a high chance you can pass it through by putting in your carry on, ask me how I know ;)
Is it the same rule for celebrity, I bought 2 non surge outlets for the equinox ship I’m going on in 18 days
I am confused. I have European adapters that have one outlet and then two USB outlets, is this no longer allowed? I go on Harmony in 8 days, do I need to remove these?
If we are british can we still use adapter plugs?
We have two c- pap and and air machine to drown out the noise what is a person to do
Fill out the special needs form www.royalcaribbean.com/resources/guest-special-needs
What about UK/Ireland to EU/US Adapters?
What about the European plug
Are Camo boards shorts banned ??????????
On the list it says it is prohibited if the ships stops in Barbados. However, tbh I never bring them to be safe because camo clothing in other countries can be misconstrued.
@@Justjakelive
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, thanks for the info bro....... Good to know but I do love Camo though..........
May Camo around the ship pool only....... ? 😉
the biggest thing for a lot of people is having a place to plug in a C-pap machine.
Some of us travel with 2 C-pap machines what do you do ?
If you have a CPAP machine, you should be filling out the special needs form before the cruise and Royal can set you up. It's not a thing you need to account for on your own: www.royalcaribbean.com/resources/guest-special-needs
So a UK adapter is okay as long as there is only one plug
Except that the room steward uses that UK outlet for the vacuum cleaner.
Yes
So the question I still have is, are we able to bring a converter plug from Euro to NA outlet?
For example, so convert a single plug euro to a single plug north american plug.
I saw someone ask RC and they said yes. It’s when it splits it into more than one non-usb outlet. It’s ultimately a load capacity thing. multiple USBs won’t overload the system but multiple plugs will.
Yes
Ok so basically the one your holding (at 8:11) IS APPROVED? I'm trying to be sure because I'm going to just buy the EXACT one you're showing instead of shopping around. I'm way too confused with all these banned & unnamed items. This is my very 1st cruise & i want to bring everything i need, nothing more & nothing that'll get confiscated.
The links to the devices I believe are approved are below the video in the description
Why would they try to ban camo clothing? It's not like they would find them while searching luggage...
Many countries ban it so it is easier to say don't bring any.
The issue is not on the ship but are not allowed on certain Islands as only police & military wear camo.
Some countries ban wearing camo.
St. Lucia, Antigua, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados are countries that ban civilians wearing camouflage b/c it's what their military wears. There are many other countries that do as well.
This is why all of my travel electronics are USB chargeable. Problem solved.
I see that only ONE other person has questioned why the venerable Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has been relegated to Naughty table fodder!! Really? Can it magically.tap into the navigational system and reroute the ship to a unforeseen destination in the hands of a malicious individual?!?
Enquiring minds want to know.....
Because the Note 7 explodes...
Just be carful and not leave a power bank plugged in unattended, they are Lithium batteries, I had one at home start smoking I threw it in our pool. I also dont leave my phones, tablets or laptops plugged in when I go to bed or unattended.
I have for years and have never had a problem.
I found the paranoid individual. Manufacturers specifically design their devices to not be overcharged.
@@freeman_fundamentalsNot paranoid, but actually being mindful. Many cruise lines will tell you not to leave things charging unattended, allegedly it's why this current ban exists.
As long as I can plug in my CPAP…
You should fill out this form before every cruise www.royalcaribbean.com/resources/guest-special-needs
UP NEXT!!!
Ridiculous, what about people from different country's with CPAP machines !!! I think we've done our last RCL cruise.
CPAP machines don’t need to have anything brought with you. Fill out the Royal caribbean special needs form and they will do everything www.royalcaribbean.com/resources/guest-special-needs
@@RoyalCaribbeanBlog They give you 1 extension cord but what if you have 2 C-pap machines ?
Fill the form out twice. I'm sure they've seen it all before
@@RoyalCaribbeanBlog so will the extension cord for CPAP have an adapter on one end to convert it to an Australian plug or do I need to bring one myself?
why not the galaxy note 7?
Are Samsungs note7s catching on fire? Why banned? I’m out of the loop
Samsung Note 7 was quite famous for randomly exploding lol I think that's why Samsung discontinued their Note series.
I wonder if they’re gonna confiscate my camouflage board shorts
what board shorts? they can't confiscate what they can't see 🤣
To be honest, we have never brought multiple outlets on board, except a power strip on our second cruise. However, we have brought multi-USB devices, which are still allowed. This ban is really no big deal.
Why baby monitors? Just curious
Radio interference
@@RoyalCaribbeanBlogthank you
@@RoyalCaribbeanBlogI’m curious if you happen to know if WiFi & Bluetooth monitors cause radio interference/are included in the ban?
I’m going to be contacting Royal anyway & can ask, but figured I’d ask here.
I have severe anxiety & the only thing that helps me sleep is having a video monitor of our 3mo (will be 6m at cruise) I can look at throughout the night to make sure he’s breathing 😅
Potential future content creator here and avid cruiser, what camera do you use for all your content?
Need wall outlets not USB/USB-C. Surge protectors add a benefit to have additional outlets. Which will help charge or allow multiple uses. If my wife and I have fans to keep the air flowing in the room. They should give an example of what is approved so it doesn't get out of hand as you stated.
I had one in my checked luggage and they apparently didn’t detect it because it was still there when I got to my cabin
If you’re worried about vape pens or cartridges or even edibles its really matters where you leave out from i just did the mariner out of Galveston texas and i was able to bring everything not only that but the couple next to us brought 4 bottles of wine and a whole ounce of some good gas
my Utopia room had like 5 or 6 outlets and a bunch of usb ports
this is a huge issue for me as someone who needs a cpap machine as well as my husband :( often I see only one outlet near the bed.
There's no guarantee they have enough Cpap cords or access to plug them by the bed. I'm out. Not all insurance will cover USB plugs for Cpaps, if that is even a thing.
Insurance? It’s not more than $20!
@@carollynt What are you talking about? "Insurance? It’s not more than $20!" There's no guarantee enough Cpap cords; there's accessible outlets to plug in by the bed and Cpaps are covered under medical insurance and I don't know if having one with USB is a thing and if they are covered under insurance. No clue what you mean by your statement.
Medical device needs (CPAP, nebulizer, scooter, etc.) qualify you for accessibility accommodations. Fill out the Special needs request form and they will put a multi-plug extension cord in your stateroom for your use.
@@emileefontenot5252 They said you can't bring electrical plugs, i.e. strips for extension cords. It's not a matter of using a plug it's about using an adaptor for any kind of extension cord to reach the bed. What happens if they don't have enough extension cords for those that need them, especially if 2 people in a cabin need it. The only adaptor for "extensions is USB. Had to deal with that once and not having access NEVER again will I trust jumping through hoops for hope and prayers they have what we need. Nope, not happening, if we can't bring our own Royal Is OUT. Period.
But are they actually catching them on embarkation day or it’s lip service
It make sense. If a room is only rated for a certain number of items to be running at once, but everyone is using 3 or 4 more items, then a system overload could happen. Who wants to be adrift on a ship when a circuit trips? Or worse, the ship loses power when maneuvering at port. Wasn't there a recent cargo ship in Baltimore that lost power and it drifted into a bridge and destroyed it? It seems extreme. What will my steamer do? Nothing? What if 4000 other people are steaming their clothes for formal night at the same time? Best to err on the safe side, yes?
THERE IS NO GROUND ON A CRUISE SHIP
There is. It is always grounded. Earth-water-metal
Only thing about power banks is that they don’t allow u to carry on airlines. Very dangerous
Hearing 'no weapons' allowed sounds so odd to me. Who would even think to bring a weapon onboard?? Maybe it's the Canadian in me talking.
There was a couple recently on Carnival and they made a video about it. Her pickles were confiscated but not the gun
@robertb7864 I guess that's another reason never to cruise on Carnival
@@dennisegrant5901 We've never had a problem with Carnival or any other cruiseline. We have 4 more booked with them.
I officially will not book any one on Royal Caribbean as a travel agent because of this. And I will not use them anymore because of this either. Another thing cruise lines need to get off. The band list is amateur radios. The fact of the matter is those cannot interfere with the communications at all. Those videos can’t even transmit on those frequencies. They have not banned DMR radios.
You're a terrible travel agent because who are you to tell people where they can't book a cruise with? Everyone is acting like a death sentence, it's not even that serious.
@@LaquetaHodge funny I’ll get people coming back to me all the time. So I would shut your mouth.
What is it with RC? This is total nonsense! On top of that, they will NOT EXPLAIN WHY this is necessary. You want cooperation from people, tell them why things are happening and keep them informed. You want a bunch of PO'ed people, just keep issuing edicts from "the throne" without explanation!!!!!!!!!!!
“Not allowed to bring a weapon on board no matter what”. Yeah, I’d like to see them try that out on an FBI agent or US Marshal or USCG or DEA conducting a law enforcement investigation
Royal C have too many rules - they need to chill out a bit
Man, this is making me cancel two cruises with RC because of their poor electrical engineering of their ships. I need to pay a premium for electricity … shhhheeesh 🤦♀️
I don’t know why you’d cancel a cruise over it. The usb hub works quite well
@@RoyalCaribbeanBlog older ships, there are four people in the room and three plugs. It just wasn't going to work. The newer ships have what our family needs, as you said in the video.
Customers shoud "Ban" Royal Caribbean.
Thank you Matt for clearing things up. But I can not understand how this can cause a KERFUFFLE. Its the least KERFUFFLE-LY thing it could be!
You wound not plugg SIX devices into a single power-outlet at home! Why? Because it would blow a fuse! Its NO different on a cruise ship!
Common people! Some common sense will tell you that!
Happy cruising....without starting an electrical fire!
i plug 6 things into a single outlet often
I plug six devices into one outlet. My computer's surge protector/battery connects to the wall outlet and has outlets for like 6 or 8 devices
I’ll just bring fewer devices. I shouldn’t be looking at that crap anyway on a cruise. I find this a good thing.
SLOWLY pronounce: "ROYAL CARIBBEAN"
Not to be a contrarian, but I just don’t understand why people were bringing these in the first place. Like, you should be enjoying your vacation! Not attached to a million different electronics! I’ve got my phone, SOMETIMES my iPad, Apple Watch, and a kindle. There is NO TIME I have to charge all four at the same time. I understand if people are vlogging/content creation but let’s be real, none of you are doing all that 😂
I’m also 29 for reference, so no one better call me a boomer 😂
It’s not much of a problem for 1/2 people. But a very large number of cruisers are with their family. So that’s four phones plus everything else.
We are travelling with 3 adults and use our phones for photos and to communicate with each other on board so will need 3 phones charged over night plus one of us uses CPAP so need power for that as well.. we arent buying internet so wont be on our devices other than that. We arent bringing kindles, ipads etc
