I had a chance to see them here in Philly at the Fillmore over the holidays. Under the Pressure was the highlight of the show and it seemed to last forever. I guess that would be my vote for the next WoD lesson. One of my takeaways is that they always keep things so musical it really keeps the audience hooked. Also, the fact that they have an uptempo driving beat really compliments the ambient aspects as a perfect pairing. When Adam really gets going on guitar while simultaneously keeping it so musical and tasteful it really gets the audience going. Happy New Year!!

I think sims always sound a little bright, and never really capture the "air" of an actual speaker and mic. However, they really are quite convincing otherwise, once you EQ them a bit!

Thanks Pete! I was gonna use my Les Paul, but something in me said "mustang." I'm glad that voice was correct! The biggest tone surprise I found when editing this was how good the soundtoys decapitator worked for the solo! Combined with the deco, it makes for a thoroughly wooly quasi-fuzz tone!

That's a great quarantine plan! For War on Drugs stuff, I'd recommend learning a bunch of classic Dylan and Neil Young songs - I can hear a lot of them in Adam Granduciel's writing!

Yeah! I Always try to pass along whatever structural observations I have about a piece as I teach it. Adam loves his capos and his pentatonics! The Neil Young thing relates to the loose and open feel to the phrasing of the solo. Very free and non-pretentious, very Neil Young :-)

I really like Shubb capos - they come in different radiuses for different fretboards and have adjustable tension. My Mustang has a vintage 7.25 radius so I use the shubb.com/product/standard-capo-c4/
I LOVE the retrovibe. You only hear me kick it on at the end of the intro though. It does have make your tone darker when you engage it btw. However, the tone is so good you don’t care!
Capos are great! They allow us to use chord shapes/scale shapes that we know very well and play in different keys. Barre chords are useful for that purpose, but they'll never have the same resonance as open chords!
I create all my own backing tracks and put them up for free on my website - just go to the link in the description and you can grab it! And yeah, I love WOD - so there's definitely gonna be more lessons of their stuff!

Aha! I see the confusion! G major pentatonic *in relation to the capo* - that's the key! Whenever a capo is involved, we teachers pretend the guitar ends there.
Jo Thomas I saw War on Drugs back in 2008 when Kurt was still with them, and got to hang out backstage as my friends’ band was supporting them, and Adam is still one one of the nicest people in the business I’ve ever met.

Yeah totally - I kind of think of it that he mostly floats along in pentatonic minor, but every so often adds in those extra notes to fill it in to natural minor.

For some reason when I play to the backing track on your website it sounds off.
I found that if I tune down a half step that it matches the backing track much better.

I think he use G natural minor scale for this song..
Yeah totally - I kind of think of it that he mostly floats along in pentatonic minor, but every so often adds in those extra notes to fill it in to natural minor.
