Bought one to be built at Hamvention 2023. Had a nice chat with the folks there, part of it in Norwegian crossing into Swedish. Really looking forward to its eventual arrival. And if they ever come up with one for the sensible POTA/SOTA bands (40, 30, 20, 17 & 15), that’ll be in the eventual arrival bag too. So we can compare notes next year ;-). Nice to meet you at Dayton/Xenia. Hope to see you at Begali next time too! 73 de W8IJN
👍Thanks for video. This looks very interesting. Built a few QCX kits and they are very nice. Hans at QRP Labs is spoiling us with this succession of amazingly well engineered kits at very reasonable cost.🙂
@dorvinion Well, yeah, but it takes a way to read it (serial port) and software somewhere (QMX or WSJTX client) to translate the strings. And that was not documented.
Great news! I was on the website, and looking at the options. I did not understand the "QLG2 GNSS/GPS receiver" option. Can someone share with me why this would be a good option? Thank you!
I just built one and it is great to set the time dead nutz on my Mini's for running WSPR. Get the display kit or the clock kit to go along with it. On my clock kit, I swapped the display out for a 4 line instead of the 2 line that it comes with and there is a wealth of info you can display including custom text. Takes a bit getting your head wrapped around the 2 button interface to customize what is displayed. Lets just say it is different but works.
Rumor has it that there's a high band edition of this radio in the works (as in - I talked to the guy doing it at the QRP Labs booth in Dayton). I'll be first on the list for that one. These are fantastic radios, but the whole point of these radios is downsizing your kit. That's a lot easier to do on 10M than 80!
Nice to hear. Then I’ll be next on the list for a high bands QMX. When most of these new QRP SOTA style rigs came out it was in a solar cycle slump but now the higher bands for SOTA have a lot more promise. Plus, higher bands have easier to deploy antennas on a peak.
I have build 5 QDX's of various revisions and several QCX Mini's. The QMX looks to be the highest component density of the all hands down. If you are a beginner kit builder, this shouldn't be your first kit. $50 is a small price to pay to get a built working one. It's 8-10hrs of time to put one together. I will definitely get one down the road and if history is any guide, the main board will go thru one or more revisions. To be fair, my orginal REV 1 QDX works just as good as the latest revision built. 73
@tookthe5th182 I was thinking of building either a QCX+ or the QCX Mini as my "first" transceiver build. I've build a couple of QRP labs antennas and the 4States simple CW practice oscillator without any problems. What do you think of either of the QCXs as a first transceiver build for someone with a little soldering experience? I was looking at some of the crystal kits (like the Cricket or the Rockmite), but it might be cool to have a full band to work with rather than just a single frequency.
@tookthe5th182 is right, this looks dense and therefore a little more difficult. The QDX comes in a monoband kit or a 4 band kit and is a lot easier than the QCX Mini. the QCX+ should be pretty good and if I recall, its a larger kit.
Talked to Hans at Dayton. Looking at the kit, # components and the size of some of the toroids I asked how long to build one. Hans told me HE could build one in 2hrs, that means Joe Public is probably 2x that, or more..... Ponied up for the extra $50 for a fully assembled one. Leadtime 2-3w apparently.
I have a video build series on the QCX PA, I'd start at the beginnings: when you key the QCX, is there any change on your multi-meter readings on the PA cable?
What happened to the QSX that Hans promised use years ago? It was to be an SSB 10 watt transceiver. I built the 10watt PA but the main unit has never been offered. I am very disappointed in QRP Labs.
I've been waiting for the QSX as well, that seemed like an awesome idea. He has been caught up on the QDX rabbit hole and people have gobbled them up like crazy - make hay while the sun shines.
I ordered this right away when I saw it in some of the Four Days in May coverage. Did order the built version so it looks like it will be quite awhile to get it, but looking forward to arrival. Question: if I want a power amplifier, do I need to order the QRP labs version or should this work with a Micro PA-50? I plan to use it primarily in a QRP setup, but I like flexibility :) Oh, and if this is a dumb question, I am still very new to this whole thing! 73 KF0LTY.
@@tookthe5th182 OK, thanks. I assume then they won't work with the QMX. I can't see a reason though that the Micro PA50 won't. Regardless, I will be testing!
I think if you build/use the right cable (being mindful that you might have to switch some "pins" you'll be fine with any amp. You can use the QCX PA on the band you build it for (only) and that is another option.
"It's gonna be really hard for you to mess this up." Ha! You don't know who you're dealing with, here. Although I haven't yet built one, I'm a huge fan of Hans' radios. And this one basically provides everything I want -- CW and digital on 5 bands -- for 100$. Dammit, Hans! You're just determined to make me screw up one of your kits, aren't you?!?
Nice picture quality, always enjoy your videos and was wondering about this radio just yesterday. I also wondering if you are now shooting in 4K? Best to ya!
SSB soon? Hans originally said "QMX does not do SSB at this time, not with this current version of firmware." Also the hardware is set up for it to do voice ('mic' on control board - although not populated, bu it looks like the 3.5mm 'Audio' port on the side is speaker/earphone only). So will the QMX eventually do SSB?
Well then, I am going to have to buy this! See what you do to us? I need HAM addiction counseling! Or maybe just a new radio? It's cheaper than counseling!!!
This is the way to getting EER (Envelope Elimination and Restoration) for SSB or other modes. It is far more significant than what the QSX might have been. Imagine what this could eventually lead to. A small form factor rig that does legal limit at 90% efficiency. The big 3 will be left in the dust....

Yes, I will master this skill one of these days.
I like the look of that radio what a genius, he does nice work!
He is a genius. I'm just glad he's on our side.
There was a GPS module option. What can be done with that?
I think its used to get the exact time for digital mode
I was thinking it was a "hey, while you're here... but this!" Like the dummy load and the power cord - non-specific up-sell.
