From Linda's 3rd album, from 1972, " Linda Ronstadt", this cover of Patsy Cline's song is a masterpiece. Linda's powerful and precise vocals add a magical touch to this great classic. It was recorded at The Troubador club in Los Angeles. Linda's emotional delivery is heightened by the great backing instrumentation of the band who later became The Eagles. The one and only, artristry like none other. This woman squeezed every last drop of emotion in every beat. Plus, she got the very best musicians, great artists in their own right. The great Linda Rondstadt.
According to the Wikipedia article about this album ("Linda Ronstadt"), three of the tracks, including "I Fall to Pieces" were recorded live at the Troubadour. This being in 1972, they probably didn't touch it in the studio afterwards.
Boy did God bless my generation when they created this woman...so much talent in one voice it just isn't fair. Linda, you have given us so much light and joy in this very broken world and I give you eternal love and thanks for, well, you being you!!!!!!

Thanks and great appreciation to Linda Ronstadt on the anniversary of her birthday. What would the world be without her beautiful voice that we can continue to hear every day! I know I do. I think I’ve been listening to Linda Ronstadt for 50 years and she’s probably the one singer I’ve listened to the most. This is an exceptional version; she also did a cover of Patsy Cline’s, “crazy,“ which may have been a little more popular it was on a later album that sold more. That’s also a good version to listen to harry. Props to the slide guitarist; Linda always had the best musicians backing her and saw herself as part of the band rather than a diva. I’ve seen her a couple of times live and I always thought she was a bit shy on stage, especially doing the pitter patter with the audience, but then would launch into a song and it didn’t matter. I’m so glad people are discovering her again.
I thought I had heard mostly all Linda's songs and covers, but never this one. She has always been my favorite singer . It's tough to cover Patsy's songs, but she did a fabulous job, as usual. ❤
Her voice was so strong and yet so well modulated! Total breath control. A range of 3 octaves! Perfect enunciation! She didn't need much, if any amplification in most indoor venues let alone a recording studio. Didn't need a sound engineer to do much of anything.
My 2 favorite singers of all time! I heard Patsy in the early 60's. And I thought no one could top her version. Then Linda did it, Wow! Linda's version is magnificent! She can take any song and totally make it her own. This is a classic example! What a talent. She is supurb! And it was recored live at the legendary Troubadour in L.A.!
Not one bit surprised Linda and Dusty Springfield do covers as good or sometimes better than the original. Definitely one of the greatest singers ever. Yes, she looked absolutely great, many guys really dug her look including myself.

Normally you would think that a great song like this one by a legendary artist such as Patsy Cline would be off limits but Linda's voice is so special she could take what I consider a perfect song and somehow make it even better. You should listen to Linda cover "I Will Always Love You" by Dolly Parton Harri!
Although Whitney Houston‘s cover is obviously one of her most well-known hits, it’s very different and I think a bit over the top with her vocals. Linda is more of a ballad softer. Dolly Parton, who wrote the song, also did a version and all three are unique and very nice.Dolly Parton is probably the most simple and the most country. Linda is in the middle and then there’s the bombastic torch song by Whitney.
Still have this album…every song is gorgeous and perfect. I think there’s a lot of us that had her earliest records and who felt Linda was so fantastic and couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t a bigger artist at the time. Eventually everyone else caught on and got ‘Linda Fever’ haha
Just came across this video . . . . it's now August and i missed her birthday. Linda Ronstadt has been a favorite of mine for many years, and yet I have never heard this performance. What a joy to hear it now! She was one of those few singers who could sing any style and genre and do it well, while putting her own mark on it. My intro to Patsy Cline came from my childhood. My parents would only listen to Country & Western, and while I disliked most of it, there were a few artists who really grabbed my attention and left a deep imprint. Patsy Cline was definitely one of those. Whenever i would hear her voice, I had to stop whatever i was doing and just sit and soak in every note! Linda Ronstadt has the same effect on me! Some artists are truly unforgettable! Have you heard her performance of "Long Long Time"? it's incredibly moving. Millions of people got introduced to it when it was used for the theme of an episode of the tv show "The Last of Us".
Part of the album was live. Pre-Eagles members were her unnamed back-up band. There is a Neil Young song, a Johnny Cash song, Jackson Browne song, and more. This is a Capitol Music album, part recorded in a studio; the live cuts are at the famed Troubadour in L.A.
Thanks, Harri. This live version is what appears on the studio album. There were several live cuts on the album recorded when several prominent Eagles members were forming her backing band.
I've been a Linda Ronstadt since 1967 and I have many of her albums. I've seen and heard her live in concert and she sounds the same if not better than her records. She has the most amazing voice and a beautiful soul! Dolly Parton was exactly right when she said that "Linda can sing anything".
There is no way they added applause later. She was a great singer, the musicians she used were the best in the biz. I've seen her live and I can tell you this could definitely be live. People today are just not used to great talent. They think it can't be done without computers. This is real talent, period.
It is live. Recorded at The Troubadour. It is one of three live songs from her 1972 album. The other seven songs on the album are studio recordings. Great album.
Thank you for adding your honest, gobsmacked reaction to your first-time listen. It genuinely adds to my rediscovery of something I loved 45 years ago.
Another great reaction Henri! Patsy Cline's version is also amazing since she has such a clear voice. But Linda has the knack of taking other's songs and making them hers. She has done this with so many songs, like Desperado, It's so Easy (Buddy Holly), Blue Bayou (Roy Orbison). You have to remember that the artists of the '50s-'80s did live music all the time, and they were so good, that the live versions were often 'perfect'. It is great to see your loving Linda so much! I do too,and I have st about all of her albums (all on CD).
I actually saw Linda with The Stone Poneys at Fillmore East doing 'Different Drum' in 1971 w/Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Wonderful show. Love your reaction to this, Harri.
She has always been my favorite female singer. I listened to her back then.. I saw her once in concert. (my birthday is the day after hers.) Look up a song called Colorado. I think it is on Don't cry now, but it might be Heart Like a wheel. It is my absolute favorite of hers. Then, maybe, Skylark.

She is a legend. It's so sad that she's unable to sing anymore. We have these recordings, so thank goodness!
Excellent Steel guitar work also.
Thanks for this
Thank you for adding your honest, gobsmacked reaction to your first-time listen.
Yes, live perfection, listen to all her live performances, always perfect.
I actually saw Linda with The Stone Poneys at Fillmore East doing 'Different Drum' in 1971 w/Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Wonderful show.
Love your reaction to this, Harri.
Beautiful!
This album also has "I still Miss Someone" written by Johnny Cash and Crazy Arms. Two country classics recorded by many artists.
