if you think about it, all th clint movies from the 60's and 70's were summed up i that line. the westerns, the cop movies, etc, were all about how he pitted his own ability against the strengths or weakness of a foe. he knew what he could do...and couldnt. he knew what his opponent could do...and couldnt, but they had ego that blinded them, and he was realistic and practical, and that was his advantage.
The interesting thing, watching this again, is how cool Calahan is, standing right next to a car that has a ticking time bomb in it, standing close enough that the blast would kill him. Yet, he does nothing to give it away. Just stands there like he's got all the time in the world.
That's because he's an actor and there's no real peril, so it was very easy for Eastwood. It's a silly scene, in reality the police chief would've shot harry dead. There's no way he'd allow harry blabbing before a jury, once the secret was out, even if Harry was found guilty, the chief would never get away with forming another execution squad.
That scene was one of a kind, harry did exactly what he need in the right spot for beat his enemy, wow, Clint is the legend of the legends. Great movies indeed.
I saw this when it came out. When bloodied Holbrook appears at the end, it was a scary moment. Love the music that ends this movie and the original. It emphasizes Harry’s isolation.
Eithel Rotschild Lalo Schifrin composed the music for Magnum Force including the intro and ending and composed music for other Eastwood cop movies including the themes to all of Dirty Harry movies and did music to movies like Bullitt, Joe Kidd and Mission Impossible theme
The two flattops in this segment of the movie, tied up at Marine Salvage and awaiting final disposal were World War II-era CVEs: ex-USS Rabaul and ex-USS Badoeng Strait. Both were scrapped not long after the movie completed filming.
You love them because the good guy wins in the end over the bad? Hollywood has used this all the way back to when movies were starting to be made! Most people like this kind of ending. When I saw a movie that first violated this tradition (The Victors)...it "bothered" me for days!!!

I love Magnum Force and love this line, but it always bugged me that we're supposed to believe Briggs doesn't see Harry toss the bomb onto the back seat.
The best part of this…….no one else around except Harry to see what he did…….he walks away, and if he doesn’t say anything, who is around to dispute anything……..he knew his limitations……
Buy me Skittles. Yeah until poor lib-tards complained. Like that scene in Magnum Force, when his exotic Asian fantasy neighbor, Sunny, asks him what does she have to do to go to bed with him. According to a story about him - Asian ladies are STILL having sexy fantasies about his scenes with Sunny, much to feminists distain.🤔😁😉

As Harry uttered that phrase, my prime cat (out of seven), leapt up and landed gently (ie for a change, not sinking his razor-like claws into my flesh) on my thigh...compared to the scars there and the generally shredded trousers...oh yeah a man's gotta know his limitations!
Unlike the other movies, he mainly said that line to the lieutenant, and i always thought it was funny how you see the first time hes confused but it looks like it annoys him later in the film
My dad had an LTD. A real heap from the day it rolled off the train. (They were delivered by train from Detroit back then, not on ships from Asia.) I think Harry put this one to its best possible use.
Well... Today in merca, there are no limitations, anything goes, get in the way of the syndicate and they'll leverage the beast against you. Look what they did to Rittghouse, after they had attacked him....
Most definately! Lol! "Not only are they stupid, there two proud to admit when their wrong. They let their egos get in the way." Harry Callahan in the the Enforcer.
I saw a video about the Dirty Harry movies, breaking them down. The first movie got a lot of bad commentary about being essentially a rogue, vigilante cop. Magnum Force was essentially about vigilante cops that were a stark contrast to Harry. Take that!
Siskel and Ebert once did a special show analysing the success of the Dirty Harry film series up to Sudden Impact, the movie that had just come out then, and one thing they particularly noted was the production team's instincts for reading the audience reactions and tailoring each succeeding film in response. The first movie portrays Harry as a fascist, so in the next movie, he's up against a right-wing death squad in his own department. When conservatives lost their shit over that, the third film pitted Harry up against left-wing terrorists. Female viewers complained about the character's apparent misogyny, so the fourth movie pairs Harry with a woman who's a kindred spirit, a gang-rape victim exterminating her attackers one by one.
The tiny hint of expression in Harry’s eyes as he watches Briggs drive into oblivion is priceless!
Dirty Harry: " You LOSE, Briggs" lol 😂

Something about how Holbrook wipes his face all shakey always stuck in my head about this scene.

@@duffman7065 Holbrook showed his talent here in that subtle thing. It probably wasn't even in the screenplay or directed, he just knew it needed to be done.
