    too tired to read all the comments...not sure if anyone else suggested it...but i saw on another video where they put their boots in a plastic bag then tucked it into the foot of their sleeping bag to prevent boots from freezing...sounds better than putting frozen boots on to me! Great video...wish I was out there...LOVE the snow!

Weird juju going on with this with the forgotten clothes, dual hiking stick failure, hiking stick lost, water bottle leap etc. Just portrays how every trip forms it’s own unique personality. Great hike! Always, always enjoy your videos.
    My thoughts on winter hiking such as this, it's always best to be prepared for the worst that can happen especially when you're hiking solo. As much as the snowshoes add a lot of weight, you never know exactly what mother nature is going to dump on you in the higher elevations. As you well know postholing is hard work, tiring, wet and a very slow go which are all things that you don't need when the hike is not going as planned.

    Smart to be conservative when alone, stay safe. So glad to see you enjoy the Amok hammock. I have considered the Amok. Your demo helps me know that I may pull the trigger with more confidence. Your discussion of terrain and map reading, GPS use, and trail use in significant snow and cold is a good example to fellows who need to brush up on orienteering skills. Well done. The Whites are truly beautiful with enough danger to be exciting, whew! Way to go! Thanks for the trouble you went to to film and share. Texas

      We had a group backpack out during the April Fools Day nor’easter in 2017. We didn’t even make it to the pond before setting up camp. And no chance we were making any summits that weekend. We did have snowshoes but it was too much, about 2’ of fresh snow, single digit temps and heavy packs. Maybe another day lol

      I was thinking that for the next trip that may or may not be a good idea or suggested before. Could you use those hand warmers and put them in a dry bag for your boots, batteries and also to put inside your sleeping bag? I’m glad you have the GPS. That was extremely cold for me. Enjoyed watching it from my cozy chair. Thanks again.

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was thinking after this trip that I need to do that or at least throw some hand warmers in them over night. The second morning was actually worse. It took me like 10 minutes to get them on, haha.

    • @aliceg9571
      @aliceg9571 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Need to take care of those toes for sure. Always look forward to your videos. You explain things so well and with a sense of humor. Hope you found your trekking poles. If you can see what you recorded while your there you might be able to go through the footage and possibly figure out where they might be. But again that might be a long shot. Anyway, No need to respond. I know your busy. Just want to be helpful, if I can. ATB

    • @sintax77
      @sintax77  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aliceg9571 To continue the mystery of the hiking pole - I noticed on that the wide shot of me walking up to camp that it shows only one hiking pole on my pack. It probably never made it to camp and popped off at some point while hiking the ridge after it failed, which wasn't the real trail. Unfortunately, I didn't hike out that same way, so it's probably still laying up there, waiting for me to return some day, haha.

    The Kilkenny is definitely a rugged and remote area for sure. I did a 3 day backpacking trip out there this fall and the miles take a while to come by. There's a cabin on Cabot that some folks sleep in. A little rough looking inside but cozy for sure. Still waiting to run into you on trail as my wanderings are typically in the Whites. Great video bud.

    Wet snow is the hardest in terms of keeping boots dry. Only solution I've found is a combination of rubber randed full coverage gaiters like those from Berghaus (secure with shoe goo to keep the toes down) to keep boots dry from the snow and b) VB socks (aka bread bags) between liner socks and thin wool socks to keep boots dry from sweat. Using this approach, I can usually leave my boots out of my bag overnight without finding frozen boots in the morning. Hope this helps.

    I have ran into moose twice on trail. It was an experience for sure. 1st time was on the summit of Mt. Shaw in the Ossipee Range (NH). The second time was in the White's coming down from Mt. Parker. If and when you attempt Mt. Cabot. There is an old cabin on or before the summit that can be used as a shelter.

    THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Again for another awesome vid!!! I love your style of backpacking! A nice balance of adventure and chill time! Perfect! Mt Cabot is actually one of the 4s I’ve done. Did it with the amc and the leader had these two sheep herding dogs that kept nipping at our ankles the whole time! Anyway, the view not so good up there, but the view from the boy scout cabin a half a mile from the top sort of good. We did it as an early start day hike cuz we were staying in the leaders cabin like an hour and a half away from the th. To keep this family friendly, a long darn day! It’s actually pronounced CAB-it. Good to see another video from ya! Happy new year!!

      Thanks, Hammocker. Sounds like a good hike. I'll have to get back up there in the summer and give those summits a try myself.

    Hey bud ..just wondering... I'm looking at the EMS pants you hike in and noticed they seem pretty roomy and baggy ...is that how they are or did you size up from your actual size for layering purposes thanks in advance...

    We always kept our boots between the double layer sleeping bags but it only went down to 45 below each night every year - never used a tent in the winter

    I don't mind the idea of using some of the new products out on the market, but there's something to be said for a good old FIRE... To cook with and keep you warm .. COFFEE!!

    It seems every trip I take I forget something too. One time on a five day trip on the AT, most of the food I took with me had to be cooked and I forgot my stove. I had packed and repacked my pack in the quest to reduce the weight and didn't t put the stove back in. I did have my pot and fuel canister so they were just extra weight. My worst was when I didn't pack my hiking boots.

      If you go to Berlin, and head north on Rt 16 to Errol, you stand a good chance to see them. Along the Androscoggin, lots of them in the evening, except in winter.
