Played it off and on since pre-alpha.. it's come a very long way in terms of mechanics/gameplay. If they released this say 2 years ago it would of been one of the worst games released. It's a much better game today, but in no way is this a AAAA game.
The only game I would even remotely place in the AAAA sphere is Star Citizen, but we all know it would be a miracle for that project to be completed.

All they needed to do was cut out the Assassin stuff from Black Flag, make a pirate story, had made it years ago, and kept it single-player with their usual bullshit at the time and the game would have printed money with little effort since they had a blueprint right there. Why Ubisoft faffed about for years allowing them to become the late comers to a niche they had accidentally discovered a market for is mindblowing.

Having played the beta... it really isn't garbage at all. It isn't AAAA, that's for damn sure. I'm also very worried about what the monetisation is going to be like. I do like what I've played though. Enough to know that I will definitely be buying this game and playing a lot of it. I don't actually care about most of what people are saying are it's short comings tbh. I don't really care very much about the swashbuckling side of pirating. I just want to sail around inan age of sail ship and shoot stuff with my friends. That's exactly what we got and all of us are pretty happy with it so far.

I mean, how often have final products differed vastly from "betas" (This is often not even the correct usage of this term). Stop trusting corporations because they owe you NOTHING and will take advantage of blind-faith
Only trust what you know as absolute, first-hand verifiable, facts. Otherwise any burns are your own fault, though I won't say "deserved" since nobody deserves to be ripped-off

A grade games are generally reasonably priced.
AA games are a bit more than you'd like to pay.
AAA games are often expensive to buy, and then get extra wallet drains added later with micro transactions and subscriptions once the sales cash slows down.
I can only imagine a AAAA game must sell for around the same price as a typical console, requires a subscription on day 1 for off-line single player, and micro transactions are actually macro transactions with similar prices to a whole ass A grade game.

    You know, there is a Greek child god called Plutus who is god of abject wealth/capitalism who’s very presence showers people with so much wealth they become greedy out of touch dimwits. Zeus blinded and crippled him so he’d always need to keep on the move, but gave him so wings so he could still get around - as a result financial power is often slow to arrive, quick to take flight and often ends up in the presence of those who don’t deserve it;
I don’t know why but whenever I think of Yves Guillemot, I end up thinking of Plutus. Strange, that.

Having played the closed beta of Skull & Bones, it's uh... A game.
    [Edit]
Let me explain (this is based on my time from CBT so it may have changed), this game really doesn't have much going for it; a huge chunk if your time is spent gathering resources or sailing. Ships are one of three archetypes: Support, Tank and DPS.
    I didn't try support so I can't comment
DPS class, however, was way too squishy and offered no discernible damage difference to a tank class while having (I think) 1/3rd (maybe 1/2?) the hp of a tank ship of equivalent size.
Yes, there are multiple ship sizes as well, starting with your little pontoon boat (which its only advantage is it can fit in places the larger ships can't) to Small, medium and eventually large size ships.
The ONLY positive I can really give this game is as you sail around and not in combat, your crew will randomly sing sea shanties.

"Hey, everyone creamed themselves over ship battles in AC4 so hard we've been putting it in every new AC game since... I've got a genius idea!
Let's take that system and make it the sole focus of an entire game, save money by skimping on the plot and non-ship combat, throw in microtransactions for customization options, and justify all of it by making it a live service game! Live service is the hip thing these days, surely everyone will drop the five other live services they're slaved to in order to play *our* one!"

It's hilarious to me that they're releasing this over 10 years after Black Flag, completely missing the time window where this would've made a big impact, and with less features and gameplay systems than Black Flag. And then they call it a AAAA game, ask full price for it on top of the GAAS BS monetization that they'll have in the game.
They just keep digging that hole...

  • @XionEternum
    @XionEternum 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

All they had to do was export to ship faring mechanics and potentially the on-foot mechanics of Assassin's Creed Black Flag into a multi-player game with some interesting dynamic missions, objectives, factions, etc. for that dynamic experience. Could've been done in a year since the vast majority of the mechanics and art were already there and done in ACBF. But no, they had to mothball it, constantly delaying it, and finally get around to launching it they had to inject it full of MTX for the live service model that was indeed booming when ACBF came out, but is now lamented across all of gaming. Doesn't take this long for a single writer to write out a dynamic "choices matter sorta" story that can branch out into open PvE/PvP/PvPvE/etc. Which tells me that the entire game was practically phoned in.

You're right and I feel like most people aren't actually aware of that. Each A is a million dollars in production cost so, a quadruple a game should cost a billion dollars to make. Which is obviously bullshit in the case of this game, this game might be a AA game, if that. The whole A system doesn't mean much though, there are a lot of Japanese companies like Capcom and Nintendo that make what people would consider AAA games in terms of quality but, with a budget of a AA game or in Nintendo's case A games, they are just really frugal(cheap) and use a ton of outsourced labor.

It's refreshing to see you do real reviews again versus muckraking (not that I'm complaining either way). AAAA also equals the smallest battery you can get short of coin cell, so I wonder where Yves head is besides spraying nonsense.

  • @enoughofyourkoicarp

So I googled it, apparently there's a meaning to each 'A' in AAA, according to google the first one denotes 'critical success', which most AAA games aren't, this one doesn't seem any different so far. The second denotes 'innovative gameplay', which is rare at best and absent here. The third is meant to denote 'commercial success', which, in fairness, happens quite often. So if Skull and Bones sells well then it won't be a tripple A game, it certainly won't be a quadruple A game, it will be an A game. Frankly if this is Ubisoft's A game then that explains a lot.

Remember, guys: AAA refers to the amount of money the CEOs expect to milk from you. Devs get worked to the grave for it.
    NEVER preorder.

You know what's funny, about a month prior to Skull and Bones coming out, I picked up another game called "King of Seas" on GoG. After SnB came out and I watched some gameplay, I realized that King of Seas was the same game... Sorta. Ship combat only, different ship types, boarding actions where you don't have to do anything other than grapple hook the other ship... The major differences are its art style, view point, KoS has decent customization of ships and an ok...if not predictable, story. All while being, at time of post, 2.89$ cad, normally 28.99$ and made by an indie dev.

And sales-current player numbers of AC: Black Flag are up since S&B release.

If it doesn't have the airship board fights just like in Granblue fantasy relink,
If it doesn't have the character create system as complex as PSO2 or Honey select 2 DX,
If it doesn't have boss filters just like in AC6/Elden ring,
If it doesn't have a trading system just like Warframe does,
If it isn't as good as SOMA,
If it isn't as immersive as Fallout new vegas,
If it isn't as thought-provoking as the Talos Principle,
If its gameplay isn't as good as Nier Automata,
If it doesn't have a good and complex story like in plane scape torment,
If it doesn't have lovable and memorable characters just like in BG3,
Then they're just making themselves a clown in the face of the public. ignore this game and look for something else. It is a live service game just like Diablo IV so you can't find a repack/pirated version of it in the future.

Played the beta and while its not horrible... its not good, not worth the $60 baseline (God forbid the $100), not worth a First ever quadruple A rating let alone AAA, and for having spent such a long time in dev hell even with what should have been an easy remake with much much more.... not worth the wait.
