One of my favorite things about Luffy is his ability to keep things simple. The story is beyond massive, and the stakes get higher and higher, but he always manages to simplify the situation and keep his focus on tangible connections, mostly food related.

Apparently, Luffy was one of the hardest casting challenges that the casting director has worked with. He's a beloved & iconic character who is simultaneously dumb as rocks & incredibly emotionally intelligent. They needed an actor who could portray the wide-eyed wonder & joy of Luffy while also being able to capture the serious moments when needed as well.
The fact that One Piece Live Action seems to almost universally be appreciated by fans of the series tells you so much about its quality, especially when you look at basically every other live action manga/anime adaptation.

Luffy is what happens when you have someone with sky high emotional intelligence and borderline handicapped IQ. He's very good at telling immediately if someone is a good person or a bad person, and he doesn't spend time worrying if his actions are ethical, intelligent, or rational. He simply helps the good people and turns the bad people into paste. He lives in a complicated world full of cruelty and exploitation and layers of competing power structures that nobody can see a way out of, but he just shows up, punches the bad person in power in the face, and moves onto the next person that needs punching. He pits ruthlessly effective simplicity against an incredibly complicated world and he's just so damn strong and charismatic that it's the world that bends and breaks instead of him.

It's easy to dismiss Luffy as a naive idiot (well, to be honest, he is a bit of an idiot). That said, Luffy is also someone that somehow makes you believe in him. There's no cynicism or guile behind his smile, he's someone who absolutely believes in what he says and no amount of failure or betrayal is going to make him give up his dreams. He's a free spirit.

  • @dragonbretheren
    @dragonbretheren 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +85

As you touched on, Luffy doesn't see people for their utility, but for their humanity. It wasn't Zoro's combat skills and ability to fend off half a dozen Marines that caught Luffy's attention, it was Zoro's willingness to stand up against a bully to protect an innocent young girl. I think were it not for the rice ball scene, Luffy would have been content to ignore the barfight happening around him and continue eating his meal.
Later, Luffy decries Arlong's question about "could you have used [Nami] so effectively?" by retorting that Nami is not a tool to be used, but a person with hopes and dreams. He doesn't recruit Nami because she's an amazing navigator (though that _is_ a happy little bonus), but because she's a fundamentally kindhearted person who puts others' needs before her own, even to the detriment of herself; and that is the kind of person he wants on his ship.

I've heard before that Luffy isn't necessarily someone who makes things happen for other people. Instead, he's someone who removes barriers that would otherwise prevent others from going after and achieving their dreams. And that's actually really important: he's not someone who makes your dreams come true, but instead makes it such that YOU are able to go after your dreams and have an actual chance of achieving them. He helps others self-actualize, which IMO is far better than just doing it for them.

Initially he appears extremely naive but you come to realise he does see the brutality, exploitation, nihilism and selfishness of the world he lives in but he chooses to react to that with positivity, by lifting up those around him with joy, with genuine interest in them and by doing everything he can so that everyone he appreciates has a chance to reach their dreams. Having said that, I really do love and appreciate characters like Luffy (and Papyrus from Undertale for that matter) whose optimism seems to be rooted in childishness and naivete but then it gets tested and you see how sincere they are and how deep their beliefs go. Maybe it's because I love and appreciate characters like them that I almost have a hard time understanding why people would hate or be annoyed by them. Maybe it's just a personality thing, since the older I get, the more I try to cling on to optimism and positivity, even as I grapple with the harshness of the real world, so I really do enjoy characters like these.

Goku, Naruto, Luffy, and many more share this. Of course, Dragonball, being from the 70s 80s, introduced these tropes. It's not stealing. One Piece is the best-selling fictional book in the world for a reason.
Dragonball hasn't even 10% of the amount of depth and character work than One Piece buddy. One Piece has such rich and passionate stories and a continuous solid world building.

    - Shanks, despite being down an arm, makes a sea-monster (that just bit his arm off) back off and makes even Mihawk, after us seeing what he can do, makes him hesitate about taking him on.
    - To think about what Buggy said "him and Shanks were on the same crew", after knowing all this, like how do you pair that with *that*

Luffy is a loveable lucky positive idiot, but that makes the few moments where he gets really serious even more impactful. Trying to be vague and not spoil, but I'm at Water 7/Enieis Lobby arc right now, and his response to impending loss and having to make important decisions as a captain shines through. He doesn't lose the optimism, but he is VERY serious these arcs. Also as they go through the Grand Line it shows why people like to join his crew, and what makes them loyal. Great video, can't wait for your analysis of the rest of the crew!

Over the course of the manga/anime, Luffy becomes one of the most emotionally intelligent characters around. He starts the live action with more emotional intelligence than the source material, but it’s definitely a core trait of Luffy across the series. Luffy winds up essentially becoming a masterclass in mentorship and leadership.

Again and again I am always drawn to characters that will do what's right no matter the consequences. Luffy is one of those characters. His personal sense of justice is so clear-cut and he's willing to sacrifice so much for what he believes in. That's why I love him.

  • @Beeezledrop
    @Beeezledrop 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

It's not often you see characters who are just so positive even to a fault. When I first watched this show Luffy reminded me of Zack Fair from Final Fantasy 7. He has this happy-go-lucky positivity that can't be dampened even in the face of tragedy and loss. It was the reason Zack was my favorite character in Final Fantasy. Luffy reflects those same traits and they're so seldomly used in modern storytelling that it's always a breath of fresh air to follow a character that embodies that kind of energy. The characters I tend to like the most are usually the genuinely hyper-positive characters who ooze optimism no matter the circumstances. Who needs dark and brooding when you got bright-eyed optimism?

I love a lot about this show and how it portrays the characters (toned down from the anime and manga).
The slow change in Nami's opinion about Luffy (The 2 "I'm a different kind of pirate") and how he always trust her even if Zoro don't.
EP. 6 shows another Luffy, who don't know how to deal with certaing things.
Also, I think everyone in the crew have something related to food that attracts Luffy, though not entirely sure. Zoro eating from the floor, Nami stealing to eat, maybe the stories of Usopp about dragon meat? And Sanji "no waste of food" policy (and feed the hungry).

    • @jorgeporras9262
      @jorgeporras9262 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think that food thingy is intentional at all.
I actually feel like his absurd love for food is mostly ignored to the detriment of his character, because food is one of the only things that brings out his negative traits, and it's because of his few flaws that Luffy's character is vilified later on to justify his status as a feared pirate and to show the extent of propaganda in the world.

4:11 fun fact, luffy is the only character in the original comic who doesn't have any thought bubbles.
the author, oda, stated that he wants to show luffy is a man of action, so he decided to never draw luffy thinking in a monologue. this is partially because luffy is optimistic to a fault, and partially because he's just not the sharpest tool in the shed.
there is exactly one gag in the series that uses this little fun fact, where luffy comments on something he really shouldn't and then says "but i was just thinking that! did i say that out loud?!"

It's cool that you're getting into the One Piece Netflix show. I kind of hope this gets you into the One Piece anime/manga because there's a LOT to unpack with so many of the characters in this franchise. I will say that some of Luffy's characterization is different in the Netflix show is different from the manga/anime, specifically in how he often says he's a "different" kind of pirate. In the manga/anime, he really doesn't care how people perceive him, in fact he goes out of his way to say he DOESN'T want to be a "hero" or seen as a "hero". He uses this incredibly childish analogy to explain why, but the gist of it is that Luffy sees heroes as being completely selfless in all situations, to the point of being obligated to do the right thing no matter what, and Luffy would rather not deal with that. Above all else, Luffy values freedom, both for himself and everyone else for that matter, and he'd like to be free to do whatever he wants, whether they be seen as "good" or "bad" by others. Of course, that's not the say he's a bad guy. In fact, on the contrary, if there's one thing that series creator Eiichiro Oda and the Netflix producers nailed when it came to live-aciton One Piece, it's finding the perfect actor to embody Luffy, Iñaki Godoy. There's something about Luffy, that he's inexplicably nice and optimistic and even charismatic to a degree, to the point where he's capable of making friends with people almost immediately and even has people willingly follow and help him because of that. Even when Netflix Luffy says or acts in a way that's different from the original manga/anime, it always felt "in-character" just because of Iñaki's performances just feels so... Luffy-esque.
It's also funny that you were initially turned off by how saccharine, sweet, positive and you don't really take him seriously, because that's honestly kind of the point with Luffy. A lot of characters having a hard time taking Luffy seriously, but Luffy is always sincere with what he says and believes in (to the point of being easily fooled sometimes and being a God-awful liar as well). As for how "sweet and positive" he is, well, you'll soon come to see the world of One Piece is... pretty terrible, a lot of the time, to the point where the hope and optimism Luffy brings with him feel like a breath of fresh air and exactly what the world of One Piece needs. I've seen a number of people say they were turned off by Luffy at first for similar reasons only to finally go "I get it now" after watching/reading more of One Piece. Hopefully you'll feel the same way, the more you get into this.

Your talk about positivity around the end there is what I aspire to do with my life. I want people to be comfortable with me, show off their true selves without fear of being judged, and most importantly, have that inner child be integrated into our self so our curiosity and thirst for learning is never depleted. This is why I strived to do anything I can (one of which is getting a degree in Psychology) to broaden my perspective and learn to be as unjudgmental as I can be.
Funnily enough, me reading One Piece and seeing Luffy's stupid antics and moments of *deep* emotional intelligence was the one of the factors that gave me the push to pursue this ideal, along with reflecting on The Beatles' song Hey Jude especially the lyric:
"For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder"
What I'm saying is, learn to have a bit of Luffyness in you

I find that Luffy works for me because of the ways he puts his positivity into action. I especially think of that scene with Nami breaking down after Arlong betrays her. Luffy doesn't give a rousing speech, but he also keeps her from further hurting herself, and he just stays with her. Given what she's been through, I figure just having someone at her side for a few moments was huge. Yes, as soon as she requested his help, he and the guys got mobilized, but he knew what she needed right then.

The best part for me is that he acknowledged Nami's agency.
As far as he knew, she may have been suffering, but is working hard to overcome it with her own power. Something I'd argue every straw hat respects. And so, he is on the standby, always ready to throw punches at whatever faces he needs to, but not a second before he is asked to be involved. Until then, he's just a friend taking a stroll nearby. Will stop you from doing stupid shit (like stabbing yourself), will hear you out, acknowledges that every reason for him not to be there are indeed true. And he stays. And we hear the "tasukete" that formed many OP enthusiast, into the proper cult we expand today.

I'm new to One Piece.. watched the show to make my bf happy but also a bit out of curiosity at hearing how this crazy looking anime adapted as a live action, which seemed impossible really, is actually not terrible? I was surprised at how much I loved Luffy in this show and that he's my favorite.
So then I started the anime early October and now at 452 episodes in... I feel it safe to say Yup! He's my all-time favorite character. Loved him since he popped out of that barrel and love him even more and more as it goes along. Love all the straw hats and so many characters in this anime, with Luffy sitting comfortably at the top.
Before getting into any of it.. I always thought his character seemed too dumb and annoying.. as I only seen glances of him at random points growing up and avoided OP.. I have been SO WRONG. I have been missing out all this time! But now instead of looking at all these episodes as an impossible, daunting task like I have been for so many years.. I look at it in EXCITEMENT! I get to binge, binge, binge. The toughest part is how much I want to know everything already but I think I'll be upset when I catch up. Part of why I'm leaving the manga to read after watching.
Sorry this is long lol this is how I get when I'm excited about something I thoroughly enjoy ☺

One thing I think you didn't cover, because it really wasn't portrayed well in the live action remake, was Luffys intense rage at arlong park. He is endlessly positive, and always sees the best in people. But once he had adopted Nami into his family, and realized how much Arlong hurt her, in the manga and anime, his only desire was the complete destruction of Arlong and everything he built he barely even talked until he got there and started Fighting. I think this is important because it shows he isn't just dreamy and idealistic for no reason. He is extremely protective of this better world he wants to see, where people are free to pursue their dreams.

For a clearer example I suggest checking out Psyculturist channel and his vids on the anime Mushoku Tensei. As some are 4 hour monsters as he goes over everything with a psychology filter and brings out so many graphics (Hierarchy of needs pyramid; circle mapping how things ripple out and in to socially effect things those type of things and more).

I watched the live action on a friend's recommendation, and Iñaki Godoy sold me on the character in just a few scenes.
His goofy little grin when Alvida asks what kind of monster he is, and he just answers, "The stretchy kind!" made me really like him as a character.

I think you might get out more about his character from the anime/manga. A lot of his morals and important moments aren't included in the LA, even though it captured the essence of his character. The unbound belief he has on himself is rewarded in the OP universe- those with the strongest of wills prevail. He's brash, hyperactive, and dismisses social cues and expectations. However he's incredibly emotionally intelligent, empathetic, and hard working. His craft is his fighting (a borderline genius as a combatant, always thinking outside the box to overcome his opponents) and his passion is adventure, and finding the One Piece. And bugs, for some reason. He loves beetles 😂
Oda wrote him to be almost a force of nature, inhuman like in a lot of ways. Because the story is a fantastical setting where dreams and wills can shape fate. Many people dislike Luffy cus he's unrealistic. I think that's the point!

You hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that Luffy doesn't think before he says things. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He gets his crew in trouble by talking out of turn. He exposes uncomfortable truths that most people would be too anxious to say. For the overwhelming majority of the manga, which spans over 1000 chapters at this point, Luffy has very few thought bubbles. They're extremely rare for him despite being a common feature of any comic book. Unlike every other character in the story, if he has a thought, he just says it! This was a conscious decision by the author to illustrate what kind of person Luffy is.

Honestly, you can make a whole series on the different characters in this Netflix show. Also, 1 thing I'd like to point out with young Luffy is Luffy was never really an angry kid. He'd get angry at some points but it's more of annoyance than anger. Like Luffy getting annoyed when Shanks tricks him into drinking milk/orange juice and not being a man because he wants to be on Shanks' crew AND Luffy snapping at Shanks for not fighting the mountain bandits.

One of my favorite things from the anime that the LA portrays well is Luffy is forever enamored and inspired by his nakama. I love how a lot of the time during fights, Luffy actually puts his own combat situation on hold to fanboy about his own crew. You can tell his enthusiasm is genuine because he’s not praising or fawning over them to win them over. They’re already part of his crew. He’s earnestly infatuated by the people he surrounds himself with.
Another thing I like about Luffy is that he is legitimately a genius in certain ways but is just uneducated.

Georgia, please had the analysis for the characters in the manga called Berserk. The traumatic event and their recovery post traumatic events are worth to be analysed

A pretty good analysis of live action Luffy. I hope you'll go on to do analyses of the rest of the Strawhats. I'm particularly interested in your analysis of Nami. Of course, I'd also be interested in your thoughts on Luffy from the manga or anime as his characterization is quite different, especially early in the series.
The one thing I feel like is missing from this analysis is how Luffy reacts when someone he cares about is in trouble. That, to me, is the key part of Luffy's character.

They did Usopp and Sanji dirty. Usopp I can kinda understand, but what they did with Sanji, I can never forgive.

Luffy is a liberator, and that is exactly how he is going to be a pirate king. He liberated Koby, Sanji, and Nami. The ending of episode 2, after he defeated Buggy the clown, one of the villagers asked him whether he was their new captor, and Luffy sais no. The villager is surprised since he is a pirate, and Luffy sais "I'm a different kind of pirate" which is so satisfying to hear from him, because he knows exactly who he is, the liberator "stretchy" kind of pirate. I think that is also what Garp wanted to understand about him.

Luffy's positivity is even greater in the source material. And in the source material, he has a very high EQ. He's really good at reading people and telling if they're a good guy or a bad guy. He is also selfishly selfless. During Alrong Park. He doesn't try to get Nami back. Not really. He doesn't care about any of it. Not her backstory, not her motives, and doesn't even ask if she needs help or tries to convince her to come back. It's only when Nami is betrayed, lashes out at him, and then asks for help that he drops everything and takes down Arlong. He's not the hero, and he doesn't want to be seen as the hero. He would rather be selfish. But he'll tear down the world to help someone he considers a friend, with consequences and collateral damage but damned.

When he says “I’m gonna be King of the pirates” I believe ‘em.
