- Hardenberg was once a border town where many people spent the night. Boatmen, traders, hessenwagens and German agricultural workers passed through the city on their journey to and from Germany. With the arrival of other means of transport in the second half of the 19th century, Hardenberg lost its position as a transit city. The city became impoverished. Only after the Second World War with the help of the national government did Hardenberg revive again. This has made it an important economic hub in the region.
