This canal is called Hamilton canal. Good old days duch use this canal to transport goods from putlam to Colombo and Colombo to putlam. Its more than 150 km long. These days Fisher folks use this cannel to go to ocean and mainly for fishing. These are very nice people. Very friendly. Unfortunately because the language barrier they can't express all what they want you to know. But very intelligent. With few words they explain about the activities.
Have a safe trip ❤from SRI Lanka 🇱🇰

The fisherman has a line that's 3km long and then they put bait on all the hooks on branch lines attached to main line.
    It's called long lining.
They'll put the line out and let it sit for a day, maybe two and then pull the line in.
Common way to catch tuna amongst other species.
I worked on a big longliner in Australia 30 years ago. Our mainline was 60km long and we attached 3000 lines to it! Catching big tuna for Japanese sashimi.

great vlog. even though my father's family is from near negombo and some of cousins are fishers ,I did not know what these boat men do. they seem to speak Tamil and Singhalese, as did my father. The canals were developed by the Dutch and along the canal there were Dutch descendants living until recently. many were in the police service.

Those fisherman keep there fishing hooks in the box
When they go out in the sea
Each hook is hanged with a piece of fish then it's all connected in a rope
They call it the line it's 3 km long

It is connecting from Puttalam to Colombo passing through Negombo 👍 the fishermen were so friendly and offered you on their boat and like always so kind of you to give them some tips 👍🙏🏻 I love that your hotel is located beside the canal , nice one Ken 👍🥰

What a lovely and interesting boat ride along the Dutch Canal with 2 friendly local fishermen. Wonderful to learn and see their way of earning a living like selling fishing hooks, making fishing nets and maybe mending torn fishing nets. Yeah, the locals there are indeed very friendly and welcoming...👍👍
Aha...a typical question commonly asked : " Are you married?" The answer was in the previous video "l am too young to marry" 😀😄 Please watch that video if any of you haven't !!
Thank you, Ken for another beautiful video. Cheers 💪

Ken, they use all of those hooks when fishing. One long line is put in the water and they bait each individual hook. At either end they drop a float. Then they wait 4-5 hours before pulling back in the long line with hopefully very many fish attached (caught). They aren't selling the hooks...the 300 rupees is what they're paying for them. The other men fish with their nets.... fish such as sharks tear holes in the nets as well as them getting caught on coral and rocks lying on the bottom of the ocean. They were mending the holes from previous fishing trips. Most if not all of those boats are used for commercial fishing. Some fish caught are kept for personal use but most are sold to fish buyers who in turn sell them to local markets for resale or export the fish to other countries around the world.

If you go to india, pakistan or bangladesh most of the people like those boat drivers may not speak any english word even. Sri Lanka has higher literacy but some corrupted politicians ruining the country 💔

    • @peacelove728

True, but on the other hand very very few Sri Lankans speak good English, even the educated ones such as doctors, while in India educated people speak fantastic English. Many people in India are illiterate compared to Lanka, but on the other hand their better schools are better than anything existing in Sri Lanka. Have spent 3 years in each of the 2 countries.
