I asked this question in science class way back in 1980 when we being taught why objects expand when heated and contract when they are cold. As a 12 yo my observations of the ice cube tray in the freezer told me water expands when frozen and having just been taught that plastic is a poor heat conductor i knew the tray wasn't contracting enough to overflow the tray. So I asked the question Why does water expand when it freezes? With the class laughing at me the teacher Mr Burza abuse me for asking a stupid question and said if I was to stupid to listen in class not to bother coming because he wasn't going to teach me. The taunting continued the entire year from both the students and the teacher. 10 years later I discovered my observations were correct. So Screw you Mr Burza for the humiliation.
Wanted to personally thank u for this video because i have struggled with my physics course for some time now. We have been focused on heat, energy, and temperature for a while now, but most of it was review for me as i had previously taken chemistry. This 0 to 4°C concept was very confusing for me and my professor was not very helpful in explaining it. Thank you so much.
There is no lattice. So, this explanation is only partially correct. He is somewhat misrepresenting the fact that the "crystal lattice" has never been observed.

Not to call this whole thing dumb, but then how did burza explain the fact that ice floats on water.
It is 2021 and students are still so thankful for you sir!
this is seriously the best i have ever seen. I cant thank enough.
Great Lecture! So easy to follow!
Great! Thanks!

Great, simple explanation. Thanks very much.
This is amazing excellent explanation
thanks!
Good job
What happens if the water is frozen and heat begins to warm it?
thanks alot sir
so god!1
