Personally I've always felt films like this work better as a short films rather then feature length. Other wise I find no matter how good the directing and cinematography are to watch (which this film is stunning) you're just left with quite literally watching the same thing over and over and over again.

    • @scriptmonkey7812

SKINAMARINK definitely worked better as the nearly-identicle short film HECK.

Agreed. I feel this movie could've been 30 minutes if it wanted to stay a mystery and not explain much, but 90 minutes of unexplained stuff can get a bit tiring. Still liked it though

The trailer for this made it look at least a little more fast-paced. It was giving big Wicker Man vibes. I hyped my friend up on it and we went to go see it. Then the credits rolled and we looked at each other like we had waited the whole movie for the movie to start. It was only us and one other guy in the theater, he was sitting a few rows behind us. he began softly snoring about 30 minutes in, then sneezed really loud, which was the scariest part of the experience, then fell back asleep. it was a good time overall, but not necessarily because of the movie hahaha i’m loving the experimental horror right now though and i’m happy i tried it out! thank you for always putting interesting finds on my watchlist! you’re the best!! ❤

I actually liked this movie quite a bit. I think the more I think about it I can visualize in my head all the different time loops that are happening and where they lead (similarly to The Outwaters), and in terms of mood it almost felt like a mix of Alan garner and Robert Aickman's weirdest stuff. I also found the way it captured the quiet introspective moments people can and do have with nature mirrored my own experiences with it. Also the sound design was incredible (especially seeing it in the theatre).

Watched this just last night, and I really liked it. That oh so slow build that you don't realise is happening, until you suddenly notice how tense your muscles are and how fast and shallow your breathing is. And it's such a love letter to the land and sea around Cornwall. Or maybe a mix of love and wary respect, given how they both give and take life with equal abandon. And how you can treat the film as an intellectual puzzle, finding order in the non-linear progressions, or as a purely emotional experience.

I’ve just watched this film having returned from a holiday in Cornwall a few days ago. I actually visited the merry maidens stone circle while I was there and there really is something creepy about that piper stone. I only managed to catch a glimpse of it over a hedge as I drove by but it looked incredibly imposing. Something about it made it seem much bigger than it actually was. It’s hard to describe. Also I visited another called Boscawen not far away. I approached it from the farm footpath but when I turned the corner there was a dog just sat there with no owner and it just started barking at me. There was no one else around. I was shit scared lol I had to turn round!

Saw this at MIFF last year. Really enjoyed it. With films like this, I'm pretty happy to let them take me where they will and this one clearly declares that it is not going to be a conventional horror which allowed me to relax and see how it would go. I loved the 70s BBC sci-horror look to it and thought of it as though it was what actually living in one of those settings would be like. Also, love Skinamarink but would not call either experimental as they are offered as complete statements rather than tryouts (perhaps I'm taking "experimental" too literally, though). Still, an even-handed response to something that will probably divide horror fans. Mark Jenkin who directed Enys Men is a DIY filmmaker whose non-horror debut Bait is to be recommended. I love how different and bold this follow up was. One last thing; there's an interview between the makers of this an Skinamarink on TH-cam which is worth a look.

I saw this at a horror film festival last year, and I agree with you. I was sitting there just waiting for the daily routine to have some sort of interruption or event that would lead me down a road of intrigue as to what's happening. But the more it went on, the more I started fighting sleep. I ultimately left pretty close to the end because I just couldn't take the lack of anything interesting happening. But it definitely gets points for nailing the 70s look of the film and the gorgeous cinematography.

    • @spookyastronauts
      @spookyastronauts  ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah the visuals are all we have I guess. Spoiler
It seemed pretty obvious to me what was happening on the island with all the paranormal events and the ghosts of the islands past, also the character dealing with her own grief. But I figured that out in the first hour and I was waiting for some kind of poetic reveal but it never came

Interesting. I watched it like a week or two ago and maybe I was still high from Skinamarink and The Outwaters that I went into Enys Men with that kind of expectation. And I agree it's absolutely gorgeous, shot on a handcranked camera on actual film. I feel like the book was my one thing to hold onto in here, and now to hear that it was a throwaway prop is terrible! I think I will probably revisit it sometime, when I'm in a mood for it. Two other experimental films that I enjoyed were The Last and First Men, which is another very artsy piece with Tilda Swinton narrating a Swedish sci-fi novella from the 30s with some weird Soviet era architecture in black and white. I saw that one while I was half-asleep and it was beautiful. On a very different side of experimental I would shout out A Wounded Fawn, which I really loved. This one has a similar 70's look, being shot on Kodak film, but interweaves in ancient Greek drama as part of the plot. So interesting.

I liked your full and considered review. I personally loved the film. I've been a long-term horror fan and although it's hard to say this is a horror i found it unsettling, which IMO is one of the hardest emotions to capture and has a lasting effect. I understand what you mean by either leaving things a mystery or obvious, but i personally think people will view this film and its meaning differently. It is clearly about loneliness and isolation, but how much of what she experiences are dreams and imagery based on actual events or purely a product of her isolation? Is she haunted by guilt and if so, for what? I don't want to give anything away, but i recommend it.

Thanks for the review, Emma. Despite the low score, I may still check out the film, just because I like the setting and time period. I will know what to expect (or what not to expect) in the film's opening half.
It's hard for me to fully understand what is considered an "experimental film", but I guess there are certain films I love that are not typical in their plot. I've always thought of "The Blair Witch Project" as experimental, at least when it came out. Other favorites of mine are "Footprints On The Moon" (1975) and "Lost Things" (2003).

Keen to see this, I grew up in Cornwall in the 1970s so it has a special resonance for me. The director has made a number of films about Cornwall, and i miss the place a lot. It has a special atmosphere and a lot of mythology. I missed this film at the cinema in the UK so will catch up on digital. I suspect it will work better for me that way in any case, though I get that this film won't work for everyone. I enjoyed Skinamarink (is that the right word?) but didn't enjoy Worlds Fair. This one, on the other hand, has a real sense of nostalgia for me (I hope)

Rabbits by David Lynch was an interesting experimental short(40 min). There are three humans dressed as rabbits in a 50's sitcom type setting. To me it seemed to depict how animals(rabbits or humans) get along in their daily routine despite constant, impending danger nearby.
As for Enys Men I think I'll pass. Thanks for the review.

Full on 10 for me. Fascinating from beginning to end and the scene with the priest made me well up. I loved Enys Men - I do think it's something you have to see in the cinema, enveloped in darkness for it to work its power over you. I don't think the film really sets out to scare the viewer, rather than to be an evocation of a particular place, the Cornish/West Country landscape. This has a lot more resonance for me as it's my home landscape and I think the film captures the eerie (but not in a frightening way) and timeless nature of the place. The director said that he didn't set out to make a horror film and wasn't sure if it was one, he really wanted to depict his home and its sense of place and I think he captures it well. The two main influences he cited were Penda's Fen, which you may like more as it has a distinct symbolism to interpret but may be too routed in questions of British identity to work outside the UK. The other influence is the BBC's Ghost Stories for Christmas, stylistically similar but with distinct narratives - would love to see what you make of them. Great hearing your view on this film and though I got more out of the film than you, your perspective was insightful and informative as always.

I love that the definition of horror is expanding beyond slasher/monster/paranormal but there’s a limit…..Skinnamarink rode that line closely (for me it didn’t scare me but something about it sent me into a ptsd episode despite none of my triggers being in the film. It was something about the constant ambiguity of what’s happening and constant tension expecting something “horror” to happen. So I wouldn’t call it scary just weirdly triggering). But this film…. (And yes i saw it) isn’t horror imo. When something finally did happen after 40 min of nothing it seemed more “drama” than “horror”. Yes the horror genre can be greatly expanded upon but it still needs to follow the basic principle of generating a sense of “horror” or “fear” in the watcher.

I'm an audiophile (and also a movie lover) so I do appreciate the style of "analog" horror... but I feel the stories are not strong enough. It was a drag to go through Skinamarink and it could have been so, so good and horrific. But there's a point where you cannot spend 2 hours of testing someone's patience and holding back with no real payoff.

I've never heard of this one, but after sitting though Skinamarink and feeling nothing except tedium, I feel like I'll be giving this one a hard pass. The most abstract film I actually enjoy is Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE, but vague as it is, that film actually has a plot and characters in addition to tone and vibe, along with a standout performance by Laura Dern. The most frustrating thing about Skinamarink is that it had no characters, just the occasional human prop.

Tbh, I wish that people didn't lump "experimental horror" all as one thing. I think it can be a useful label, but if you watched something like this and something like Ghost Stories they are very different movies, even though both could be called experimental. (This isn't to disagree with the video btw, just my opinion of the whole "elevated/experimental horror" debate.) Ultimately people are gonna be scared by different things, and there's even an argument to be made about whether a horror film even HAS to be straightforwardly scary, at least as a primary purpose, when horror comedies and "gateway horrors" exist

This film would’ve been better if it had at least one actual scary scene and perhaps some narrative or cohesiveness.

Yeah, I didn't love this one as much as I hoped I would.
I don't mind repetitiveness, but I Agree there was definitely too much of it with little change and that it took too long until anything really happened.
Wasn't mad about how it all paid off in the end.
Not a terrible one, but definitely a disappointment

The problem with all these new experimental movie, is that.. In my own perspective, they do try way to hard to make it close to what the movie Possum was.
The thing is.. While Possum did work to some extent, because the movie was clearly showing a deep and dark meaning to it, those new experimental movie do not. There is clearly something missing. Experimental shouldn't resonate with "Experimental" only, it should also resonate with experimenting with's viewer emotions. And just showing pretty shots, with nothing happening it's doing it. If I do need that, I go to a museum. Same stuff.

I enjoyed it but it’s deeply connected to a time for a lot of people where we were relying on our connection to others through the internet to explore identity, it captured that greatly, but I can 100% see how it wouldn’t work for most people

The cornish coast? does that mean there is a country called Corn? if someone has children there are they Children of the Corn? i bet the Olympic Corn Hole team from Corn is #1. All joking aside i have no problem with someone trying something new and really going for their artistic vision but...keep all these movies for those who want the experience, i tried and nothing stirred in me. Thanks.

It seems that the director took a lot from experimental filmmaker Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman 23 quai du commerce 1080 bruxelles. Instead of the mundane, day to day life a housewife who is a sex worker which makes a sudden horrific turn at the end. Instead of a small apartment, the isolated island ups the dred. factor. Pass.

I liked skinamarink and loved the outwaters, but I could not stand this. Maybe the novelty of the experimental horror has worn off but I never felt unsettled or disturbed once during this movie. Yeah it looked cool, but style over substance just isn't for me.

Nothing like ari, it’s totally different perspective and style. I don’t think a24 are that experimental they just give over full creative control and lean into stylised pieces. Light house is close though haha

1.5 hours of something explaining nothing.
I believe it's expected for the audience to feel horror in the emptiness in this film.
The sounds were annoying at times, but overall I'll give it a 5/10.

I love horror but Midsommar is about the farthest level of "experimental" that I will go. I just dont get these types of movies and the choices that are made. 40 minutes of slow establishing shots is not necessary at all.
