As a tattooer and a business owner you need to know your worth and the costumer is not always right, BUT you also need to know when to be flexible and fair, my terms are up to one week notice you get a full refund of your deposit, up to 72 hours you can reschedule one time without forfeiting your deposit, below 72 hours you lose your deposit . That’s fair for all sides

Exactly mate. I used to work in customer service and we had a refund policy that was clearly written on every receipt and people would still try to get refunds outside of the refund policy and tell me I'm lying about the policy even when I pointed it out to them on their receipt.
I wished I was closer to where you guys are cuzz I'd put in a deposit, pay, and tip you all 100%. I just got a blackout tattoo and I love it. Wished Jon could do the other arm!😀

The artist that did my tattoo was great, we communicated for months, created an unique design, and redid it 3 times before we were both cool with it. He chose the size, I choose to have it upside down, he choose the placement. Great communication. He told me about a client who wanted this indian symbol that is like the svastika but in the other way. The tattoo was on his torso. My artist told him that's a bad idea, people will not understand. The guy told him, "nah I got this, I know that this symbol is about life blablabla." Months later he came back. He couldn't take his shirt off for his MMA match anymore. The audience and judges didn't like that. He asked for black ink to cover all the tattoo. Sometimes, it's great to listen to the client, sometimes better listen the artist.

I’m way too sensitive and delicate for the community, but I like this channel and the clips they do. It caught my eye. I like seeing the situations from the owner’s perspective.
Most businesses that take deposits also have a certain threshold of a “cancel” period. Booking 6-9 months might seem easy to make when it’s you saying “I will be at my job” but you’re not seeing it from the consumer standpoint. The consumer can say “I’ll be at work” it your forgetting that this is extra curricular. If you have a 6-9 month waiting list then you should easily be able to also have a 30 day cancel period where you can move up your client dates. I can appreciate where you are coming from but at the end of the day you are in the service industry. A lot changes in 6-9 months no matter who you are but it is much easier to say you will be at work 6 months from that day rather than committing to a tattoo. Would if your work plans a mandatory meeting, would if there is a death in the family, should they lose or getting written up at their job, or should they miss the funeral? I just giving examples is all.
Losing your job and not getting a luxury tattoo are two WILDLY different things. Don't you think we should value the artists time? This isn't Walmart, this is one person.

The same reason mechanics charge you just to diagnose a problem. If not then everyone would be going in there and getting free art all the time. Imagine doing your job everyday and not being paid for it. At the end of the day like they said, it’s just $500 and if that’s detrimental to your finances then you shouldn’t be allocating money for it in the first place
From my experience the deposit is basically holding the date/time and/or covers the time put into drawing the piece so the deposit price IS a percentage to begin with.

It's about, school, job, application and all that. When you start to work not all employer will be cool with that... wait till you have more tattoo, more experience and sure where you live and work. If your are somewhere where everyone have a least one or two tattoo you have more chance.
Get it on a different location. Get a stable job and then 10 years down the line Get that hand tattoo. Or just work in a kitchen, then nobody will give a fuck.
Im on long island. Their shop no mans land is just a dot under 2 hours from me. Without traffic im also checking the distance at 3 in the morning lol. I dont not consider that upstate ny id consider that like early upstate ny. My uncle and cousins are 3 and 45 mins ride upstate. And my first cousin once removed us like 5-8 hours from me upstate. Depending on the travel method. And its like completely empty up there. County even
