The Greeks today are a nation in the meaning of an ethnos, defined by possessing Greek culture and having a Greek mother tongue, not by citizenship, race, and religion or by being subjects of any particular state.[107] In ancient and medieval times and to a lesser extent today the Greek term was genos, which also indicates a common ancestry.
I urge you to do some research. The spartans were not alone. 300 of the greeks were from Sparta, yes. And King Leonidus was commanding the armies yes. But there were other greeks from the various city-states. There were closer to between 5,000 and 11,000 Greek Troops. And moderm estimates of the Persian Army there actually are projected somewhere between like 70k and 300k. The movie is more legend than fact, but it's still an amazing feat.
I'm not judging anyone. I'm simply stating that today's people can't compare to what these people went through. Everyone is pampered with supermarkets, cell phones, computers.. these people fought for everything they had, worked harder than almost anyone today does. Farmers today have it a lot easier than the farmers of their time.. atleast tractors, seeders, combines and the like exist to harvest our food. The people then only used sickles and scythes and a stout back.
Regardless, imagine having 300 men alone against the army of millions, an endless ranks basically. Whether the 1,000 came to help or not, the spartans would have stayed. All in all, those 1,000 that came to help were probably just one step above better than the persians. Their appearance was basically a meat shield to stall them longer. In greece, no one could compare to the spartan army. I wouldn't be surprised if that 1,000 only got in the way.
Just seen the whole movie (Id only ever seen the very beginning) I was disappointed of how they went out but at least they went out fighting... I guess they had to send word back that they'd died in order to get the 300,000 army to finally go to war with the Persians! Make no mistake, tho, those initial 300 took out THOUSANDS just by themselves! Great inspiration!
The battle was actually fought with 300 spartans and 1,000 normal foot soldiers but the spartans held the point while more and more foot soldiers fell back to protect their families and homeland. I think there was 10,000 persians i forgot what their number was.
Actually, persians historically were some of the worlds crappiest fighters, seeing as they were all slaves, barely armed, had terrible morale, and were put through a five minute boot camp of "Here is a spear, point, stab, ok your good." Spartans had a possitional advantage and on top of that, were totally badass.
Spartans was great example of rule the country, unfortunately they wasn't all the greece. Also it was not 300, it was warriors fighting against persians at that time. So this move is not real, but really good. Their still grea heroes in history, they giving all of us example.
during the last stand Leonidas had his men move out into the wider part of the pass and had them form a phalanx on both sides once the Persians surrounded them the phalanx fell apart and it came down to individual fighting. Leonidas was struck by an arrow from a persain archer that hit him in a gap in his armor. He lay there dying watching his brothers and allies fall one by one. A battle took place over the body of Leonidas with the Persians trying to use his corps as a symbol of their victory, the remaining spartans managed to get his body back but then the Persians called out their archers one last time and their arrows found their mark the last of the Spartans died in a tidal wave of arrows. Leonidas's head was cut off and put on a pike by order of Xerxes. Soon afterword Athens was burned to the ground
If u were greek you would understand but u only ever learned to judge us without reason. You would give everything to be greek. We are not shame,we still stood and as the 300 Spartan will be defeated but we will win.
Classical Sparta fell long before Rome moved into Greece, they won the Peloponnesian Waragainst Athens in a military sense, but the influx of Athenain slaves(like philosophers and such) caused them to forsake their military ideals and relax their warrior culture more. There was also a huge decline in birth rate aand other factors, but Rome had next to nothing to do with it
This song....this moment in history....it all fits together so poetically perfect. Bravo on this video. And a salute to the three hundred...
"The Greeks don't fight like Heroes, the Heroes fight like Greeks."-Winston Churchill
A song worthy of a king
Wow everyone is hating the Greeks for having some pride in their history. If only my fellow Americans were the same...
this is the right music for the movie and documentary and those who actually live and die in those day
