- Please note, when I stated that Ford won the contract to replace the CJ5, I misspoke. They were replacing the M38A1. Also, the old rig went through a fire as several folks commented. I am embarrased to admit I missed that. Mea culpa.

Last summer, I looked at this Jeep for parts. It was advertised on Marketplace as a M*A*S*H Jeep. Certainly, this has some military characteristics, but it also has civilian aspects. For example, the rear wheelhouses have storage cubbies, a military spec, and there was a first aid kit on the right inner fender.. On the other hand, the glove box is on the passenger side rather than the driver side. That and the post-1950s speedometer rule out M38A1s. There are other things, like 24 volt relays and headlight brush guards that suggest military use.
I have come to believe this rig is a modified cj5, perhaps for a fire department (red paint), forest service, or something similar. It may always be a mystery. Meanwhile, I'm going to harvest the front fenders and windshield frame for ARNold, my 1955 CJ5.
