Maybe few years ago but not now!! England win rate in six nations (minus Italy) in the last two seasons 20%. He played our best 7 at 8 for a while leaving out, simmonds the top premiership ( a number 8!) scorer and European player of the year, maybe the best 8 dombrant, to play a 7 at 8???? Furbank started at 10 a while back before any of our Specialist 10’s?? Then starts furbank at 15 to put Freddie on the bloody wing!!! Picks daly, furbanks, youngs no mater how old and shite they are, while leaving fantastic players/talent out every squad??? Doesn’t play two natural wingers?? His win rate and selections are woeful! Stop this nonsense now! There’s no credit for him as Woodward won it so by peoples account let’s get him back then as he actually won it!!

    • @theofarmmanager267

I don’t know about “madness” but I would agree it’s wrong. I understand the given reason is that it is to try and keep players from going abroad but it seems to me that almost every player would benefit from spending a season or two in another country. It would be difficult to play in NZ and be picked for England whilst out on the other side of the world but France?
Nobody could claim that English clubs are the best in Europe; out of the top 10 teams in Europe, how many English clubs would get in? 1? 2? Of course, some of that is the salary cap which, as Alex Sanderson said, is also a ceiling on talent and achievement. I watched Leinster yesterday and saw a team of individuals working as a real team. The quality of the coaching that goes on combined with talent, has resulted in a team performing better than any other I can remember - certainly in Europe. Props showing excellent distribution skills and not just head down into contact; forwards producing clean ball from a ruck in 1 second time after time; a back line with a great balance of invention and set moves; a scrum half who, I think, is just as good if not better than Dupont. I’ve no doubt that money comes into retaining that squad but getting the best out of any squad is down to coaching and the will of the players.
Eddie Jones is going next year and I have come to agree that many of his decisions were absolutely spot on bit he is a guy who makes decisions about players and that is it for them - play well or badly, it seems to make no difference. The new coaching team have to be different. Stuart Lancaster seems to be the main coaching influence at Leinster and I can have nothing but praise for him after I thought he was out of his depth in 2015. Sean Edwards - best defensive coach in the world? Who should be head coach? I’ve always admired Richard Cockerill’s attitude but is he a man manager? Rob Baxter? Steve Borthwick? The list of English people who have proven themselves over a few seasons seems very small.

What England need is for players to stay and fight for their place. Not go off for. A quick buck. The primary role of domestic rugby is to produce players for England. We have far too many foreign players playing in the premiership depriving the development of young players. Also if we allow players who play in other leagues then our domestic rugby will die. All the good players will go off for the bucks leaving our domestic game with non international standard players. Who would want to pay to watch low standard rugby.

I don't get this rule that the clubs have to just do everything for England if you want that remove relegation so that you wont have players going down and they can focus on development eg Ireland NZ, the beauty of the premiership is that every game counts as you don't want to get relegated and the clubs first job are to win rugby games with the best players that they have available to them and choose how they want to play them
