Melbourne Central Station - Swanston Street Entrance - October 2020

A walk from Swanston Street down to platforms 1 & 2 at Melbourne Central, during the morning peak on Wednesday 28th of October 2020. This was the first morning after strict Coronavirus restrictions had been lifted, and my first trip into the city in about four months - by far the longest interval between visits in my lifetime. As retail and hospitality businesses were able to reopen on this day the city was slowly starting to come back to life, but as you can see it was still extremely quiet compared to a normal morning peak. Starting at the tram stop on Swanston St we see a number of trams from the Z, D and B classes. We then walk in via the extremely unglamorous entrance passageway before emerging into the main concourse, with a quick look up at the heritage listed Shot Tower dating from 1889. We then head down two sets of escalators and through the ticket barriers, before descending a final escalator onto platforms 1 & 2. A Comeng set is sitting in platform 2, and shortly departs for Flinders Street. We then see an X'trapolis set from the Frankston line arrive on platform 2 bound for Flinders Street, as another X'trap on a Down Greensborough arrives on platform 1, which I then board.

Melbourne central probably is one of the best city loop stations, except it’s easier to get lost with the shopping complex and such (for tourists)

A reminder of when huge sums were spent making the entrance to the platforms at the station much worse than when first opened. Perhaps a case for IBAC ICAC to follow the money.
Much better passenger flow in the 1980s compared to this maze.
