regarding the tyre noise, I actually found it add to the illusion of following a train line. Almost sounded like the “train hum” powering up and down as we went!
The sidings and weigh bridge served a set of grain silos that were on the north side of the track. The silos and weigh bridge were in use served by trucks up until about 1990. Though the eighties the silos were often labeled "floor, sugar , tea" by some enterprising youth.
Love this! There is something so satisying about discovering abandoned rail infrastructure. A couple of years ago, I discovered an abandoned railway weighbridge at the back of an old warehouse at my work. A little bit of research and I then discovered that the warehouse used to have it's own siding for freight. I hope those small sections of track on this park remain for as long as possible!

I DREAM of this being renewed as a tram line in some form, on the road at parts along park street probably, it’d be INCREDIBLE to get across the inner suburbs. Hook it up to the 82 in Moonee Ponds and Merri/Rushall station and maybe another tram line in the inner north east, and boom, a lovely inner suburbs cross town connection between hubs and train and tram lines that sits between the loop/metro tunnel and SRL that’ll be much further out. Heck, bring back the outer loop as a tram/light rail line as well while we’re at it!
As someone who lives on the Hurstbridge line and doesn't quite yet drive, some kind of pt to other train lines would be amazing. Having to get to Hawthorn is such a journey on pt compared to driving (an hour vs 20 minutes).
inner can be tram, theres plenty of room for both tram and bike path, but heavy rail is much preferred for any other sections that provide a significant time reduction for getting around with a bike. SRL will make it a lot easier to get to the places i actually want to ride, but i wish we had more above ground orbital heavy rail, and sooner.
2:50 My mum lives in the retirement complex on the left of the station entrance, next to Rushall station. I visit her fairly often, and am glad to see this video, which fills in the gaps that I miss from the car. 3:59 An interesting historical point was that in the 1930s, the VR realised that the paint on one side of suburban trains was fading quicker than the other. Around 1937 they started occasionally running trains from Princes Bridge to North Fitzroy then around the other leg of the triangle to Northcote, where they’d change ends and run via Clifton Hill back to Princes Bridge. This had the handy effect of reversing the direction of the train by the time it returned to Princes Bridge, and helped even out the paint fade. Apparently this meant that they could then stretch out the time between carriage repaints. 6:45 Surly pedestrian is surly! 10:18 Around 1980, a family friend lived just to the left, over the road from the Edinburgh Gardens. I was 8-9 and remember the rail line, with the occasional wagon to be seen. K174 was there then and I remember that the cab smelled really badly of wee, even worse than the D3 in the park at Ringwood did! 15:33 I drive over this crossing when I visit my mum. First time I did, it was wonderful to see the rails and the bike path, giving new life to old infrastructure. 16:15 The best name for a street! Being a Junee shire councillor, I’d like to petition to change my home street name to Tait, but I can’t see it working! 19:45 Since 2022, the sight of a classic VR substation gives me a warm fuzzy feeling, because it makes me think of being at Newport before an exciting day of riding Taits! 25:36 Old mate missed the memo that running bang road isn’t polite! 26:18 The VR’s role in moving briquettes around the state cannot be understated. We used them at home when I was a kid, I can still remember the smell. 27:27 My immediate thought was “That looks like a cable tram building.” Then I squealed with glee a few seconds later to hear your confirmation! 36:48 Wheeeeeee! Another outstanding video, thank you Martin!
Thanks Matt! That briquette advertisement is pretty cool. My grandma had a briquette stove at her place in Greensborough when I was a kid! It was still there in to the 2010s though we mostly just lit small wood fires in it by then. The cable tram building was a bit lucky, I'm aware of a few others around the place but I'd never noticed that one before! Very interesting about turning the trains on the triangle there - I'd heard of them turning individual cars on the Jolimont turntable, but it certainly would have been a lot easier to run them up to North Fitzroy!
I love how Taitset often inserts little Easter eggs into these videos, so much so that I would not be surprised if that kid flipping over his bike was a paid actor.
It will be cool to have some tram running in the Inner Circle Route. It will make the travel time between places like Parkville to Clifton Hill reduced to just about 10 minutes.
The "railway gate post" actually looks exactly like the base of an old gas street light and there's plenty of those bottom sections still here and there around Melbourne so whatch out for them. Enjoyable vid as usual 😊
That tramway square with the overhead wires able to be switched between 600 and 1500 volts is very cool! Overall, a very interesting video mate, well done!
I remember as a young kid when we moved to Melbourne we lived on lygon st and Brunswick rd so we used to hang around near Carlton north station, and I remember walking under the bridge at Sydney rd still had the tracks Thanks for the memories and a great video 😊
Reckon they could widen that bike path as it looks very well travelled. Thanks for the video. My father was born in 1927 and lived in Newry street Fitzroy and knew this area well. Shame the times didn't align a bit differently because it seems to me a line in that location would be damn useful today. Well at least we got some nice parkland and not housing as the result of its closing.
Thanks for the ride. Brought back some - many lovely memories. My family moved into Liverpool St in the early 1940's so I grew up less than a kilometre from North Fitzroy Station. I recall train trips to the Zoo at Royal Park, and to Prince's Bridge Station the terminus. In those days Nicholson Street had busses that terminated East Brunswick including the Double Deck Leylands. The old cable tram tracks finished at North Fitzroy when the buses replaced them they continued on to East Brunswick. As kids we played in the siding that was near Rae St - got shooed out of the sub station more than a few times. Walked along Park street to school at South Brunswick and over the footbridge. North Carlton Station was Used on some Saturdays long after the regular service was removed, to get people to the footy at Prince's Park. My grandmother lived in a house next to the rail line in Bennet street, we used to go into the triangle and get mushrooms.
Just before you arrived at North Carlton Station I believe there were sidings used by the Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment to load Armoured Cars onto freight wagons. The army depot was on the site of the new townhouses where Park Street becomes Solly Ave.
I think the advantage of this having been a rail line, even a failure of one in terms of longevity and financial justification, is that it was area that didn't receive development at the time, and survived long enough via the goods usage, that it was available land at a time when building what appears to function now as the M1 for cyclists was a viable decision, rather than turning it into roadways (the Fitzroy branch was to be part of the alignment for a north-south arterial if I'm remembering Philip Mallis' video on it correctly) or housing. That was a cool video, the rumble from the tyres and the faint whizzing from the chain gave vibes of the sounds that you'd get if you took an Xtrap along that route today.
Thank you. I have ridden that portion many times. Thank you for pointing out some of the features I was not aware of. I often do it as a circuit from Richmond station, Swan Street, over the bridge and around theMCG, walking through the Fitzroy gardens then getting on to Napier Street Fitzroy Which is a dedicated bike route, which brings you through the Edinburgh Gardens. Then follow Park Street to Royal Park crossing over the line the track takes you beside the upfield line the Flemington station the following the Moonieponds Creek then back around Docklands and Southbank. It makes a nice circuit. Thank again. Cheers Kelvin 🚴
Great video. I am from Newcastle NSW and did a bit of cycling around Melbourne earlier in 2024. On a trip going north on Upfield, I took that path by accident after Royal Park, soon corrected but wondered what was up that way, now I know!😃🚴
There’s a very high chance I was on the first carriage and got off at Rushel. I travel from there to Rathdowne each day and lament the loss of the rail, but I can see why it’s gone. Thanks for this, fascinating insight into my work neighbourhood.
Ha, just a few days ago I was in that exact spot in Carlton and thought "I swear to God that's a cable tram engine house" and took some photos to search up later. Thanks for doing the hard work for me! Love the video, the Inner Circle line is one of my favourite pointless old lines and regular haunts. P.S. the little white weatherboard house on the right before the Bowen Cr level crossing is the old gatekeeper's cottage - another example of typical VR architecture provided to their employees to live in!
"Very well trained in this area" in response to cars as if they are animals, love it. So many familiar areas, and like others - the tyre noise is just ambiance, no complaints here! Had no idea of the history of these areas i travel regularly.
Great video. It brought back memories of my days at Princes Hill High School in the '70s. We used to hitch a ride on the back of the goods trains. Just like the movies, you would run along the side and jump on. Great fun in those days. Would love to see the track restored with a light rail or such.
Great video as it brought back memories when I was a trainee engineman at South Dynon in 1969 before I transferred to Korumburra for 10 weeks and later that year to Wodonga. I only ran one train to Fitzroy but sadly I didn't take my camera.I think it was a briquette train as they ran all around the suburban area.I've sent you an email which you may find interesting.
Very interesting video! In the 1970s I lived in Jamieson St North Fitzroy, directly across the from the freight yards. I have photos, and even Super 8 footage of it all. There was a good view, across the coal storage to the city, from the former rail bridge.
I remember playing with other kids at 5 years old on the old tracks at 18:33. My parents were at work and it was just my grandparents looking after us. I have many fond memories at Edinburgh gardens. Including before they rebuilt the playground at 12:48 in 2011? I must've been 2 years old playing on the tire staircase to a long slide! I use the inner circle trail daily for commuting. Many thanks for this video.
That was really enjoyable and informative. I have often wanted to explore this line and now you have done all the hard work for me 😊. I like the way you use your bell to indicate that you are overtaking, I thought I was the only one who did that. Also a glimpse of that wonderful part of inner north Melbourne. I agree that there is really no case for re-instating a heavy rail line and even light rail would be of questionable benefit, except maybe as a tourist route, but can you imagine the infrastructure needed, way too much. 😊👍
I love that track, such a cool little area that connects so many other bike paths together. This was such a nice video to watch on what was (although it's now improving) a pretty wet miserable morning here in Brighton before I leave the house for today's expedition (Altona to see my sister and Rosanna for a friend).
Another brilliant video. Bravo! I love all the bits of track that you come across when walking or cycling around those parts. By the way, at 25:25 that pub left of screen with the round red Carlton Draught sign above it, is the Railway Hotel. One of many Railway Hotels throughout Victoria, and one of many that no longer has a railway anywhere near it.
That was a fabulous and hugely informative trip along the inner circle. You even included a dramatic derailment reenactment just out of North Fitzroy station (albeit 2-wheeled)
Another fascinating video! Unrelated to this particular upload, but I wanted to thank you so much for some of your previous videos. I visited Melbourne for the first time a few weeks ago and had a blast. Thanks entirely to your Hurstbridge line video, we went all the way out there one day and it was just marvellous. So much history and gorgeous views. Also thanks to your St Kilda walking video we went out on 96 to Acland st (never seen so many cake shops in my life) and got the 12 back into town - surreal to see so much in real life that you had mentioned - spotted the mannequins!! Also your City Loop video was invaluable for working out whether Parliament or Flinders St was more convenient for which trains. So thanks again!!
I drove down Bowen Cres for the first time yesterday and was very perplexed at having a stop sign protecting a bike track. This all makes sense now! Keen to see you do a video on the Outer Circle line. It's a lovely trail along there.
Another delightful real time presentation, Martin. On that delightful Tuesday, I would love to have been out and about, but spent most of it indoors recovering from a bout of flu. At least I had the sun streaming in and plenty of suitable reading material. Made up for it yesterday (Friday) and checked out the railway renovations between Ringwood and Lilydale mid-morning, then spent some time in and around the Fitzroy Gardens in the early afternoon (lots of cyclists and dog-walkers) before heading home. One thing that was apparent but you didn't comment on was the power feed to the tramway overhead at Nicholson Street. You showed the southside feed which was actually connected to the rail/tram power switching gear back in the days. It was a delight for me to view the full Rushall to Royal Park direction of the shared path as I've only done it in the opposite direction (and then only from the Rushall side of Sydney Road. Thanks again for an excellent presentation.🙂🙂🙂
Love your videos. Would like to see a short video on how a tramway square works. How does the switching occur with electrical supply of the different voltage types into th square.
I love this video format, the ultimate city railway ride is from the start of the upfield shared path to the inner circle, then to Fairfield along Heidelberg road, then along the entire outer circle to Murrumbeena, then follow the Djerring trail along the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines to either Caulfield or Dandenong. (50 ish km)
I love the video I learnt so much I was just wondering if you could do a video about the belgrave line because I come from around there and want to know more about the railway please and thanks
Such a great bike ride. Now that I know about this bike trail, will do the same ride. It connects to the Capital City Trail and that's local to me. Great video. Thanks so much.
@pigglebee ...try and find a copy of Julia Blundens book on bike trails in Victoria. It does need updating, but it gives you an idea of how many paths are in Melbourne and other places.
I just came back from a trip to Melbourne and I went out to Lilydale. So I was wondering, could you make a video about the Lilydale line like the ones about the Hurstbridge and Upfield lines?
Another top-notch video! Was wondering if you could make a trainspotting video? Like general favourite places, best for photography, best scenery etc.? Like a *super* nerdy vid about very niche places? Love your work, keep it up!
Everytime a new Taitset Video comes out I have to drop everything.... I've been on the Inner circle line before, it's pretty cool but definitely the best place for a ride is out along Footscray or Dynon roads past the Freight yards and the port. Pretty cool riding up to the zoo right next to the Upfield line too, It will be sad if they put fences up there
Great video, well done. I've ridden a few other bike paths around Melbourne but never seen this interesting one before. I know of a different bike path which is quite good but it's too short so I don't ride it but I can splice it onto this Inner Circle Rail Trail & make it work. Cheers.
Taitset, do you think there could be any practical use in trains returning to the Inner Circle alignment? I've thought it could be a good candidate for Skyrail, but you'd actually need a line to go somewhere else on one or both ends. MM2 doesn't look to be using any of the alignment or space either.
Hi , wonderfully informative inner circle ride. I look fwd to doing this when our weather gets better. Question for you - what video set up do you use please?
closest you've come to my home! Interesting where the housing was there was tracks and and overbridge when I oved to The in the early '00,S there at the bottom of Edinburgh gardens was an overpass from the railway, Much was in place. . The (bad) council) development took much of the character away.
The graffitied green building you pass at 7:50 - does it have any connection to the old railway line? Or is it just an old disused public toilet or something?
@@Taitset I've seen others like it around Melbourne. I can't think of exactly where, but I think there's one near the Old Melbourne Gaol and another one on St Kilda Road near the gardens.
Fantastic video, informative and entertaining as always. My only criticism is that it doesn't touch on the A+ stretch of pubs that dot the area - Terminus, Pinnacle, Railway, Empress and Great Northern, as well as the Princes Park Bowlo!
It is rare to convert a rail trail back in to an active railway line but it can be done that's the reason why they build it as a rail trail because it keeps the railway right of way.
Inner circle line kinda made sense as a connector point (as one of the two reasons for it's existence) as the direct line from Clifton Hill hadn't come about until 1901. But like the outer circle, this line's main reason for existing was real estate/politicial corruption from the land boom timeframe of the 1880s. Alot of the terrace homes near the route date from that timeframe and so this line was never going to be anything but something to attract more people with the real estate
Loved the video. Walked sections of this quite a few times, great seeing all of it at once. The stack was a highlight. And the clickity clack of you gear changes sounded like the notch lever of a train being moved up and down. Question - Is there anyway the go pro could mount on the headset or frame. The handlebar mount and low speed turns are somewhat nausea inducing :)
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes I might look at mounting it on the frame next time if possible, would certainly give a much smoother view. Although the advantage of being on the handlebars was that I could pan it like I did to follow the passing trams!
Can you recommend a place to find a historic VR map for the fullest extent of the railways in Victoria? There was a magnificent map at the entrance to the Mount Buffalo Chalet and I'd love a reproduction.
I commute by bike along this path daily. It's really nice and I find it is super safe as there's plenty of other cyclists. I just wish it had more lighting at night. Rail trains are really awesome when done well, especially those ones below skyrail. I'd love to see more POV videos of you cycling various rail trails, your commentary is very interesting. These trails do have some flaws but it's nice to see quality bike infrastructure. (Also, a little side question, what camera did you use to record this? It would be nice having video proof of drivers breaking the law.)
Very good, thanks. I'm wondering if road rules should change so that pedestrians have right of way, followed by bikes, followed by registered vehicles?

That was fun, enjoyed that. I'm from Pascoe Vale but it's very unlikely i would have ever done this trip myself.
Love this track. I recently walked it all the way from royal Park to Rushall
Hiya, I’m quite new to Australia’s rail system, but I am excited to find something out from this channel. Nice video!
Hello Riku, love your videos!
thanks for showing me my old stomp ground my primary school was just near the station there at north Carlton
Lovely ride, I'll have to do it this year! Hopefully you get to do the outer circle rail trail as well, it's great too.
Yes I think I will try to do the Outer Circle fairly soon!
Great stuff, well done that was interesting. Yes please to a matching video for the Outer Circle... and then on to Warburton???? 😂
Warburton might have to have a few rest breaks haha.
I love that track, such a cool little area that connects so many other bike paths together.
This was such a nice video to watch on what was (although it's now improving) a pretty wet miserable morning here in Brighton before I leave the house for today's expedition (Altona to see my sister and Rosanna for a friend).
Slow paced except for the last 2 minutes. You had us on the edge of our seats!
It was quite fun coming down that hill!
great video as always!!! so good to see you in my local area haha, i actually had my first birthday at the carlton north railway station!
The wind through the mic and the gear change sound like a W class tram m8
Another brilliant video. Bravo! I love all the bits of track that you come across when walking or cycling around those parts. By the way, at 25:25 that pub left of screen with the round red Carlton Draught sign above it, is the Railway Hotel. One of many Railway Hotels throughout Victoria, and one of many that no longer has a railway anywhere near it.
I live in a town with a "Terminus Hotel", despite there having been no train line terminus there since about 1960.
That was a fabulous and hugely informative trip along the inner circle. You even included a dramatic derailment reenactment just out of North Fitzroy station (albeit 2-wheeled)
Love your vid, so much about Melbourne that's new to me ..
I can still remember the silos just to the west of St.George’s Rd, when the silos shut down, the railway had no use.
Wow, ride the section from Rae St every day and never knew that I’m riding along a station platform.
Thanks for the video. Have you considered doing something similar for the Rosstown railway?
Thanks very much. It reminds me of the days I spent at RMIT. It is a beautiful cycle and a detailed talk. Many thanks. More!
That's really great to hear! 🙂
Thanks for this chill ride. Thanks for doing it smooth and in 4K so I can pause and have a nosey at all the signs and details.🤓
I drove down Bowen Cres for the first time yesterday and was very perplexed at having a stop sign protecting a bike track.
This all makes sense now!
Keen to see you do a video on the Outer Circle line. It's a lovely trail along there.
Great stuff. I really love your video style.
Traffic coming from the right at intersections is so weird when you're used to right hand driving.
I am from Wollongong and I love this! Good job Martin
(50 ish km)
Great viewing for a day where its been raining non-stop
I love the video I learnt so much I was just wondering if you could do a video about the belgrave line because I come from around there and want to know more about the railway please and thanks
16:25, Yes, a very nice name for a street indeed!
Such a great bike ride. Now that I know about this bike trail, will do the same ride. It connects to the Capital City Trail and that's local to me. Great video. Thanks so much.
@@kippen64 It is technically part of the trail, it makes up the northern side of the loop
@pigglebee ...try and find a copy of Julia Blundens book on bike trails in Victoria. It does need updating, but it gives you an idea of how many paths are in Melbourne and other places.
Hey Taitset, you should make a we didn't start the fire parody about Melbourne's transport.
I just came back from a trip to Melbourne and I went out to Lilydale. So I was wondering, could you make a video about the Lilydale line like the ones about the Hurstbridge and Upfield lines?
I enjoyed this. Played at 1.5 speed. Followed along on Google Maps satellite view. Thanks.
Pretty cool riding up to the zoo right next to the Upfield line too, It will be sad if they put fences up there
You could also cameo on the next dashcams Australia video with that footage.
Thankyou for the awesome tour :)
Great video, well done. I've ridden a few other bike paths around Melbourne but never seen this interesting one before. I know of a different bike path which is quite good but it's too short so I don't ride it but I can splice it onto this Inner Circle Rail Trail & make it work. Cheers.
Another fantastic video! It’s so cool that it’s still possible to follow the old alignment
Beaut of a video, filmed so smooth and nice to look at!
I remember from 1978 there was a tunnel just up from Royal Park we used to go through wonder if it is still there ;bike path was not there then though
I'm surprised you didn't comment on the old gate keeper's cottage next to the trail on Bowen Crescent.
Glad you enjoyed it! This one was filmed with a GoPro Hero 10 attached to the handlebars.
thank you for that, i enjoyed it.
My condolences taitest for buses replacing trains on the hurstbridge line today
That’s true, it’s literally been raining here in Melbourne for the past idk how long
Can't remember the year I did travel this track in a steam hauled train, it was a run by the ARHS
Nice video, Martin!👍
13:23 Brunswick Street Oval spotted. Play the Fitzroy club song. Play it!
closest I have to this is a busway that was converted to a bike path. It doesn't go quite as far as this rail trail lol
closest you've come to my home! Interesting
where the housing was there was tracks and and overbridge when I oved to The in the early '00,S there at the bottom of Edinburgh gardens was an overpass from the railway, Much was in place. . The (bad) council) development took much of the character away.
The graffitied green building you pass at 7:50 - does it have any connection to the old railway line? Or is it just an old disused public toilet or something?
I'm not actually sure, I previously thought it was a small tram substation, but I don't think that's the case. It's certainly strange looking!
@@Taitset I've seen others like it around Melbourne. I can't think of exactly where, but I think there's one near the Old Melbourne Gaol and another one on St Kilda Road near the gardens.
It's a real hazard because it blocks visibility right at the complex intersection where cyclists sprint to get the lights.
Was wanting a new video about something like this
Fantastic video, informative and entertaining as always.
My only criticism is that it doesn't touch on the A+ stretch of pubs that dot the area - Terminus, Pinnacle, Railway, Empress and Great Northern, as well as the Princes Park Bowlo!
You should do the great Southern rail trail
It is rare to convert a rail trail back in to an active railway line but it can be done that's the reason why they build it as a rail trail because it keeps the railway right of way.
Inner circle line kinda made sense as a connector point (as one of the two reasons for it's existence) as the direct line from Clifton Hill hadn't come about until 1901. But like the outer circle, this line's main reason for existing was real estate/politicial corruption from the land boom timeframe of the 1880s. Alot of the terrace homes near the route date from that timeframe and so this line was never going to be anything but something to attract more people with the real estate
Babe wake up a new taitset video dropped
Recorded on a gopro hero 10 - might not be best if you were filming every trip though, the battery only lasts about 70 minutes.
Was this yesterday?
It was so nice in Melbourne, I had to go enjoy the sun too!
Very good, thanks. I'm wondering if road rules should change so that pedestrians have right of way, followed by bikes, followed by registered vehicles?
With the amount of bike riders on that path, you would almost wonder if a light rail/tram loop would be effective in this day...
You should do Outer Circle Line now!
