I think I'm going to start going to the food banks and pressure canning, delivering food to the elderly. I absolutely love to cook and pressure can and have wanted for years to feed the elders. I think this is a fantastic way to use these resources and my skills. I only hope they keep the used jars for me by the door. Those jars are my LIFE. LOL.
I went to the food bank today, haven’t been, I live in Toronto so things are super expensive especially milk and eggs, I was blown away. I got 12 eggs, milk, chicken, wieners tons of can tons of produce, DIAPERS!!! What!! That was so amazing. I got shampoo and body wash, deodorant for my son, dish detergent, laundry stuff, frozen foods, juices, tea, spices, bread, rice and pasta. Amazing!

I tried a cherry tomato hack I found online. Put a handful of tomatoes on the inside of a plastic lid so they stay together. Trap them by putting another plastic lid on top, hold it there with your hand, slide your knife between the lids and slice. Just like that your handful of tomatoes is safely and quickly sliced. We have a Hospital in our area that 2nd week of the month gives Free fruit and vegetables . I love it and helps supplement my grocery bill! I use it to make my parents food and also my family.
Going tomorrow to a church food bank.Around here the boxes are already made up,you get what you get.Only can go once a month and alot of the times are the same.Like the Baptist and Catholic only on Wednesday at 9am.So you can't go to one then the other.The lines are so long.Once I counted the cars and it was 110 waiting.So you are blessed to be able for once week and picking things out .

I have a lot of cake mixes and been making cookies and brownies from them because they are at the end of their shelve life. The cake looked good. It has been a long time since I have had a bakery cake. I am still eating from my pantry. I want to get it down more before I restock.
My valentines is my dad, my dad is home from hospital after being in hospital with pneumonia he came home 6 days later, im so glad he is home but he is not ready to go back to work yet
Hello there. My husband and I are comfortable financially but certainly not rich. I've wanted to go to a food bank to help me pressure can when able. I am a total prepper, have a food room and do a bunch of pressure canning. I've mentioned to my husband that I have wanted to go to food bank for a while and he shames me for wanting to do this. I think he believes it comes from individuals and not from stores or from those who are truly hungry. I certainly wouldn't want to take from individuals. Do you find that stores donate over individuals? I just don't want to take from those who are really in need. Yet, my husband drives Uber besides his full time job. I have been hungry literally in my life and I will never be there again (God willing). I just hate letting food go to waste. Am I wicked? Am I wrong?
There is plenty there and it's for everyone in the community. I don't know what makes one person needier than another, but it helps me and my family survive hard times. That's all I need to know.
People should go in to their local foodbank or look online to see what the criteria are. They're all different and have different rules about how often people can come, etc. Carolina's foodbank is exceptionally well stocked and are as generous as they can be. Food that is thrown away benefits no one. So if you live near a foodbank that is well supported and you fit their criteria to be a client go for it. See what you can get to make your grocery budget stretch.
