  • I hear the term "woke" all the time, especially in reference to Marvel Studios. So I'm going to honestly look at Phase 4 and come to the conclusion......Is the MCU WOKE? Or do people weaponize that term far too often for the wrong reasons? Let's find out! #MCU #Woke #MarvelWoke #DrStrange #MultiiverseOfMadness #MCUWoke #DisneyWoke #MoonKnight #AmericaChavez

There are some cases where that happens but it hasn't really happened in phase 4. The Wasp is not better or smarter than Ant man. Kate is not better or smarter than Clint. She Hulk is not better or smarter than Hulk. And Jane is not better or smarter than Thor. Phase 4 has actually been the first phase where men and women are on a relatively even playing field.

The fact that people get so hung up on less white men leading the shows is kind of sad. It’s also sad how much scrutiny is put into anyone who’s not a white male. Like we can’t just have different characters of different races and genders without people spending so much time scrutinizing why they’re there and if they should be there. And is it “forced”? Like c’mon, either you like it or you don’t. Nothing is being forced onto you. And as far as America Chavez, look at the scrutiny placed upon her. Like she’s only there because she’s a gay character and they want to make money adding her in? Even though they’ve actually lost money adding her in because now certain countries have blocked releasing MoM because it has gay characters in it. America Chavez is a perfect fit for a multiversal movie because of her powers. Anyway, as a minority myself, it just gets annoying how many videos are made constantly questioning why someone who isn’t a straight while man is put into a movie or show. You don’t like it? Watch something else 🤷‍♂️

I agree. I’ve always wanted to see more black characters in marvel but the fact that they feel the need to constantly take a white character and turn them black I find disrespectful asf. Cuz like you said it’s laziness and just shows they think black characters can’t stand on their own. They think their doing us service but their really doing us a disservice. An example is DC, they want to make a black Superman Movie but yet someone like Static shock who is beloved as much as Spider-Man in the black community hasn’t even gotten his own movie yet.

Jennifer is a very different person than Bruce. Mantles being passed down isn't lazy. It's interesting. Mantle characters allow these new characters to have an interesting and unique spin on old power sets. Sam using wings and a jetpack instead of serum is interesting. Jennifer being smaller and more agile than Hulk makes her different.

Partly "woke" and partly exaggerated as "woke."
People whining about everything being a matter of "woke" have become just as annoying as "woke" people seeing everything as a matter for racial and sexual change. The first 14 MCU movies featured all white leads. Along came Black Panther and many fans defensively rolled their eyes at its Oscar win. Then the next 7 movies got back to white leads. Then came Shang-Chi and Eternals and the fans began whining about how "woke" is being shoved in their faces.

I mean ffs have you guys even seen the MCU recently? Basically the entirety of the Avengers has been replaced with females. Not even original characters either, just Female hulk, female Thor, female Hawkeye, female iron man. Lazy uninspired stories for the sake of the cashing in on "social justice". It's like Disney is actively going out of there way to kill off and embarrass our long time heroes, and just replacing them with a carbon copy female version.
I geniuely don't know how you guys can see this and go "idk what you're talking about." It has nothing to do with more woman, and everything to do original replacements. I hate it when characters get replaced for no reason just to fit a diversity quota (and I'm a black guy). I liked Falcon as Falcon instead of him just replacing Captain America when he isn't a super-soldier. They only work when a character isn't replacing but become apprentices or sidekicks or close friends, and then later on, when the character's story is at an end can then take over the mantel. She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Daredevil are great because they have their own stories and characters outside of them being minorities.

As a person of color I have NEVER asked for a mexican or black hero to appear on the big screen because I never thought to care about that. Good storytelling boils down to how we can relate to the actions, lessons, and characters that were told throughout the story. Has nothing to do with the character's race, gender, or ideology. If your story can relate to a VERY BROAD audience, then you have told a great story. That's why Spider-Man is considered one of the best. Without the suit or powers, he is just your average citizen Peter Parker who has problems that most people can relate to.

It's not that having a non-white person as the lead is woke- it's that when that person is chosen *specifically and primarily because of their colored skin/diversity* rather than their level of talent/merit- that's woke. Or if a character is picked out of the comic book pile specifically because of their color/diversity.
Also at this point it's clear money isn't even the driving force. For a few solid years now production companies have been losing metric shit tons of revenue due to poor ratings and reception due to forced diversity and virtue signaling. So it is clear there is an *agenda* being pushed here and if you look beyond the silver screen into other areas of society such as politics, sports, education and literally every faucet of our existence- it becomes quite clear.
Is there a war on white men? Really look at the predominant cultural dialogues taking place. What demographic of society is it publicly acceptable and dismissible to scrutinize and downright insult and objectify with virtually no kick back or repercussions?
All of this nonsense aside- who is the core demographic of this form of media and comic books in general? What other form of media or entertainment *doesn't* cater to their core demographic?

Speaking from the perspective of a black gay man, having a character like Phastos (the tech Eternal) means so much to me because I NEVER thought I'd ever see a black gay superhero be a thing in the MCU. Does it make scene that he's a black gay man. No. But would it make anymore sense if all the Eternals where all white straight and males. My point being, regardless of whatever Marvel's true motive for doing so was, everybody wins by taking the opportunity to make multiple groups of people who's never had a superhero represent them, finally get a a chance to be seen.
And this has been even more the case with the release of Ms Marvel, I've seen so many of my Muslim/Pakistani friends express so much happiness by getting a superhero that represents their background and lived experience in a relatable and positive way.
While I can agree it is a bit annoying to have some of the diversity characters come in the form of just replacements for their white male counterparts, I don't see why women, ethnic minorities and LGBT characters have to justify being who they are in these movies. Having these types of characters of characters doesn't always have to mean Marvel being actively woke.
Don't get me wrong, their are times activley times when I can see Marvel trying to be what is considered "woke" now a days, but only in the case of Captain Marvel and that girls get it done moment in Endgame, has it ever not made sense or felt forced.

I just don’t like how they write their female characters physically stronger than their male predecessors in this phase, I knew this would happen after they did this with Captain Marvel. Abbie Emmons did a fantastic job breaking down why fans approved Natasha Romanoff and rejected Carol Danvers based on character. I wish they make their strong female characters more like Natasha because it’s something to root for and good to look up to instead of just saying or showing that they’re physically strong and that’s what makes them strong female characters. Nia DaCostas talks about what drives Carol does give me hope that maybe Carol will get the writing she needs.

it's not so much as "To many white men" it's if the writers are trying to take precedent and lower pre established characters with women. Hawkeye tv show, daughter takes most of the stage. Wanda vision tv show, out of nowhere stated to be one of the most powerful characters in the MCU surpassing Doctor Strange. Captain Marvel, literally shows up out of nowhere after in universe decades of no activity on Earth while aliens invade with cities falling out of the sky and is the most powerful person in world. Loki tv show, girl version of himself said to save the timeline. Replacing one of Cinemas now greatest icons Iron Man with his daughter or some random black girl kid with enough knowledge on par with adult Tony to make a possible new suit (And if they disgrace his character by bringing him back as a hologram like in the comics I'll be done with the MCU post Endgame). Not Sure yet on plot since not released but She Hulk, from trailer instantly gaining control of her green rage mode where it took Bruce years in a Gamma lab alone to do.
A person once told me, you need to make "Strong" female characters. Not strong "Female" characters. There needs to be a limit on progression because most companies just think to make them super powerful or skilled right off the bat to make people love them. Wasn't the case for classic animated Mulan who had to struggle but sure was for Live Action with "Kung Fu Chi" magic.

Hawkeye has been in the MCU since 2011. 10 years of Clint Barton seems like enough lime light. The reason they brought in Kate Bishop is because some of Barton's best stories are about him being a teacher. That's what makes the character great. Wanda has that level of power in the comics too. It's not new. She was depowered for Age of Ultron. I don't see much difference between introducing a character like Captain Marvel and a character like Vision. They both have the power of an infinity stone. I don't see anything wrong with it. I disagree with the idea that female Loki is in any way better than male Loki. The difference is that male Loki is questioning his "glorious purpose" while female Loki has a clear motive: revenge. Female Loki is actually the one to ruin the timeline at the end. I don't think she saved it.
Iron Man gave armor to Rhodes, Pepper, and in the future his daughter. That makes complete sense fo this character.
There are tons of new male characters as well on top of the already experienced MCU veterans like Thor, Hulk, Ant-man, and Bucky.

No. See above. You cannot, for example, go around calling yourself the President of the United States. There will be consequences.
“It's not an issue in the movie.”
Of course not. Hence, the problem at hand.
“You yourself are choosing to make it one.”
I haven’t chosen to make it a problem, just like I haven’t chosen to make pollution a problem. It simply is a problem and I’ve identified it.
“In fact, there are plenty of places all over the world that have had female kings. Poland has had women kings before.”
Historical anecdotes do not help your argument, as the plural of anecdote is not data. The one female king you’re referring to, Jadwiga, was made king as a result of a number of issues. She was not simply crowned King, specifically, for arbitrary reasons. The biggest root of the issue was that a ruler of Poland had to be a King, which is a man. And since Asgard is not ruled by a bunch of istaphobes, there would be no reason to call Valkyrie a King (for political reasons), as Queen is the proper term for her.
“There is no misandry in the MCU.”
This is utter nonsense. When you make a blatantly false claim like this, you do yourself no favor, as the misandry is clear as day.
“Sif was kicking Loki because he consistently betrayed and hurt her and Asgard. She was more than justified. Kicking someone in the balls isn't misandry. Y'all are just sensitive.”
Is that right? So, you think that if the roles were reversed where Loki was repeatedly kicking Sif in the breasts, that would go over well with the female audience? Please, say yes for the public. Please.
Every time a man calls attention to misandry, someone starts with the ad-hominems, usually a female. That, is by definition, misandry.

To be honest, I am getting to the point where I am losing interest in the MCU altogether because I think, to your point, that there is more focus on diversity than story quality. I don't need a transgender Punisher or a gay Ghost Rider. It's f#@%ing stupid and detracts from the story. I also don't have a problem with a movie that has predominantly white, Black or Asian characters. Shang Chi made sense to have predominantly Asian characters and I thought it was a solid flick. I was not upset that there were not more white people in Black Panther. You nailed it with the Eternals... WTF! That movie is an absolutely perfect example of this point and it sucked. Funny thing was that I saw it coming as soon as I saw the trailer. I thought phase 1 and 2 had fewer movies, but the quality, IMO, was better. Who knows what will happen, but I get the sense that Marvel is watering down the MCU and people just want to see good movies.

    • @datguy3581
      @datguy3581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

How does the "diversity over storytelling" narrative even work? It's absolutely ridiculous. Who is casted does not affect the quality of the storytelling. Acting like having people who cast actors who are not white men working on these films means that they're bad writers is ridiculous. There is no connection between the quality drops and the demographic of the actors. I think a transgender punisher or gay ghost rider could be cool. And them being that way in no way affects the quality of the movies. Being transgender or gay doesn't have to be relevant to the story. It can be a secondary thing just like most straight relationships are in comic book movies. Or it could be more prominent. A lot of marvel movies include aspects of characters identities which influence them. It's not a bad thing. Tony's role as a rich businessmen affects his character and enhances the movies. The same can be done with a character's gender.
Eternals made perfect sense to be diverse since an all powerful entity was sending robot saviors to the Earth to blend in with the population. It makes perfect sense that they'd look different and be of different races, genders, and sexualities. They are meant to enter human societies. Marvel may be worse overall quality wise but that is due to the high amount of marvel projects not due to the diversity in their casts. You can say what you will about phase 4 but the female characters in phase 4 are the best female characters in the MCU. Phase 1 just had Black Widow who was pretty one dimensional and used for fan service. And Peggy of course who was a secondary character in one movie.

However the gender or ethnicity does not make or break the entertainment, it’s all about the WRITING and the performance of the actor or actress and maintaining CONTINUITY and RESPECT for the lore. Often times it feels like diversity and inclusion is forced down our throats at the cost of those very things. Then the fans are blamed for being racist as a way to draw attention to the topic of diversity and inclusion instead of criticism for bad writing and continuity. Then it becomes a whole thing of hey let’s fight back against racism and hire women and colored people, that should be enough to make our shows good! Screw the writing and everything else.

Whether or not a work of fiction is "woke" , specifically depends on if the author/writer/filmaker has the specific intention of promoting diversity OVER storytelling and the integrity of the work on its own merit.
This oftentimes means they will take a classic franchise and race, gender and sexuality swap major characters to "improve" the work, because the original work wasnt diverse enough.
That on its own is annoying enough, but the biggest problem with "woke" programming is that woke storytellers are absolutely SHIT at writing fiction. They dont know how to do it. They ruin old franchises and anything new they try to fabricate is almost invariably creatively bankrupt.
And thus we have come to dread all the wokeness in Hollywood. Honestly us anti-woke people who first noticed these trends a decade or so ago, really just want good stories. Thats it. But the presence of wokeness tells us that its NOT going to be good. So...we call it out.
    Its pretty much that simple.

Also another thing I have noticed is that there are certain creatives who claim to be centrist/apolitical would say woke is just a word that means nothing and yet when something like the eternals releases they flip flop and then imply it’s woke. But I thought this was a balanced take on this subject Great job on this video.

Marvel's top priority is woke content over quality content
Regarding diversity destroying the MCU and Hollywood's woke agenda, it's an agenda that promotes female characters, LGBTQ characters, and POC characters at the expense of original characters and quality content and story (like Eternals)

People are more than physical and/or sexual identity but many times their race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation affects their overall identity (especially marginalized people), so yes every story doesn’t have to be oh “xyz is black and dealing with racism” but just because their race/ethnicity/gender factors into their identity doesn’t mean their whole personality is that
Sidenote: racism has been apparent in the MCU just not as explicit as in TFAWS, we had a movie about WW2, it was alluded to in Nick Fury’s speech to Cap in Winter Soldier, Black Panther talked about colonization, and the Skrulls were a symbolic representation of those fighting to preserve their home world from invaders but of course they wouldn’t have a bunch of straight white men/“aliens” deal with racism because that’s not an experience they typically deal with

With Legacy characters that have had the mantle passed down in the comics like Cap/Iron-Man/Spidey etc. Idc it's nice knowing that characters deeds inspired a new generation of heroes who wanna be exactly like them. As for Taskmaster randomly being a woman and... actually that's the only one I have a problem with (Because idgaf about Eternals) If the story's aren't preachy and they don't tear down the old heroes to big up the new ones honestly it doesn't matter, Personally I loved Hawkeye & Kate great Dynamic, Chavez was side-lined for the majority of the movie while strange does all the cool stuff (and in the end doesn't even beat Wanda but instead finds a super creative way to "defeat her") with She-Hulk Thor Jane Foster & Ironheart it's definitely a wait and see kind of thing but I do enjoy she hulk as a character so honestly can't see it being bad. The OG characters contracts don't last forever so let their deeds live on in the new blood

I just hated some of the changes in Marvel. Especially, characters who show up out of nowhere to replace their predecessor. For example, if they're going to replace Thor in the MCU, I rather have Beta Ray Bill instead of someone like Jane Foster, who shows up out of nowhere, and not only does she dump him, but she's also going to take his name and his powers. I just don't like the idea of bringing back Jane Foster. Because in Thor 2, her story is over already, the romance is completely dead, the character is a bit annoying, and she brings nothing interesting to the story. What's the point of having her back is because of Kevin Feige's decision, or do some people want her back as Thor's replacement? In She-Hulk, what's the point of bringing her? Does she bring in anything in the MCU other than Kevin Feige wanted more random female heroes showing up out of nowhere and replacing their male counterparts? Ms.Marvel in the Disney+ looks something like the live-action Disney Channel shows like Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, Jessie, etc. What was Kevin Feige thinking in making this? Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea to bring in Ms. Marvel in the MCU, considering that she was a poorly written character in the comics. So far, Marvel is trying their best to make us like her all the time. She has shown up in cartoons and video games, and now in the MCU, instead of having her powers in the comics, they decided to give her Green Lantern powers, and she has her version of the spider-sense. Hawkeye, I thought the show was all about Hawkeye, but nope it's some random fangirl who is obsessive with her hero of branding, and she gets into trouble so easily. The entire show is about Hawkeye cleaning up her mess and babysitting her because the mafia is trying to kill them because of her. Just because she was in the comics, it doesn't mean they have to put her in the MCU. After all, the writers had some changes in their universe that were different from the comics, if anyone who should be Hawkeye's new partner and successor is his daughter. Not some spoiled privileged fangirl who's getting into trouble so easy and trying to fix her problem that she started in the first place. Ever since I watched Endgame, I saw Hawkeye's training his daughter in archery, I thought she would be his successor, but now it's a wasted opportunity for something to happen. They could have done something like having Hawkeye being a veteran ridden with PTSD and the guilt of losing his best friend, who is like a sister to him. But oh man! Did they batch it with a girl that screamed Mary Sue, a rich girl with an entitlement that tried to be sharp? Who is so obsessive about branding her hero and being so cringed? She's also a walking disaster who gets into trouble so easily and is "trying" to fix the problem that she started in the first place. I'm all for a new-gen Hawkeye, but why wasn't his daughter the one that took the mantle? She would have been perfect as a new Hawkeye trainy, a conflict between the daughter wanting to be like her father and help people and his father being scared of losing her as he did Natasha. The story was writing itself, it would have been amazing, but somehow it turned into this. Finally, we got the worst character of them all, is Iron Heart. Of all the people who have a connection to Tony Stark, they had to go with someone who has the littlest connection to him as his successor. If I were in charge of the company, I would go with someone like his best friend, his wife, his daughter, or his protege, any one of those people would be a better hero and worthy successor than Riri would ever be. Who's nothing more than some petty thief who steals something that was never hers, to begin with, nor has she ever earned it, will also try to seek attention, hog up the spotlight, and act like she is better than everyone, just like a spoiled brat. Honestly, Peter or Morgan should have been Iron Man's true successor instead of someone like Riri.

I think they’re over compensating sometimes. I think gender or race swapping is annoying when I doesn’t make sense. I think Wandavision, What If, Black Widow, Shang Chi, Eternals, Loki, No Way Home, Moon Knight, and Doctor Strange never over compensated. I think the only one that did was Hawkeye and that was only because of 1 not even important scene where they mention a bombshell bag and a girl being gay, even though it was just cringe and awkward. There was no need for a 30 second clip for a useless side character to have this huge announcement. I don’t know if I’d say the MCU is woke for having different races in the lead roles. Black Panther makes sense for a black role, Sam Wilson Cap is a great character, Black Widow makes sense for the women lead, Sylvie makes sense that she knows more because it’s a huge complex mess that the audience doesn’t even fully know, Shang Chi Makes sense for a lead Asian Role, and Hawkeye is still around but he has a female sidekick who he’s mentoring for when he dies.

I myself am a black man but I think Black Panther, along with Captain America: Civil War, are the most overrated films in the MCU. Plus, I knew Marvel was about to hit downfall in the material around 2016. The universe build up towards Infinity War and the characters choices they made that would get swept underneath the rug, Tony siding with the government for example. And making characters like Valkyrie be painted as a tragic hero but comes off as an annoying as Rick Sanchez wannabe with the same old bullshit lesbian drama story that made her who she was. And the other problem I had is how they emasculated Scott Lang and constantly kept bringing up his problem by fighting alongside Steve Rogers/Captain America at the airport. But I am a person who likes the source material to be presented with a good storyline that includes a valuable lesson without being preached and shoved down the throat like the MCU Disney+ shows do currently 🙄😑. But the last good MCU project that did numbers and had decent plot line was Spider-Man: No Way Home despite having some plot holes and questionable narratives on how the multiverse plays a role there and beyond. But that’s all I have to say. Take care. ✌🏾💯
