    This is a super cool direction you're taking the game in :D I really like this type of game. Like how in Noita, all the important parts like story elements, portals, lakes, and bosses, are all in the same spot, and only the "filler" is procedurally generated :D

    These devlogs are so interesting.
    Im also digging into Procedural Dungeons for my game and im having a blast inside my mind about how to approach it.
    The layout approach where you build it by stepping one thing on layers on top of the other gave me little power to stylize the dungeons.
    I ended up creating chunks of rooms with possible connections between them.
    Keep up the good work!!

  • @GamesBySaul
    @GamesBySaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video as always, this new direction sounds very interesting.
    I'm not sure too much about Gothic but in the clip you showed it looks like you're body was getting looted? Maybe that could be an element too so if you lose in combat be it whilst mining or in a settlement you get looted and ditched somewhere random?
    Also if you want proc gen caves at some point, you could always add special cave systems which change every day?

    • @bitbraindev
      @bitbraindev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. The idea is to use procedural generation "in-between" the usual levels as additional content, however, in a seamless way so the player does not necessarily realise that it is proc-gen.
      I need to find ways to make these NPCs useful (emotionally and tactically) to avoid that people just "kill off" everything in order to be as fast as possible.

    • @GamesBySaul
      @GamesBySaul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitbraindev ah yeah! That sounds great the seamlessness will be quite interesting, looking forward to seeing you tackle that.
      And good point, I mean I believe you mentioned how you want them all to be able to wipe out a settlement if they so pleased.
      Suppose you want them to be able to trade with settlements, maybe recruit companions, give perks to settlements basically

  • @sicktricks95
    @sicktricks95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This sounds like It will be very interesting to watch as you develop. Do you consider this scope creep for your project? Do you plan to create a vertical slice of you vision to confirm the design is what you want before you invest the time to develop all of these mechanics and content?

    • @bitbraindev
      @bitbraindev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, exactly. I will not fully commit building out the levels until I nailed the core building blocks. The following devlogs + demo versions will put those under test.
      I'd not consider this change in direction scope creep, as I did not even had a proper scope before. After all, forging and mining is not really captivating gameplay.

    • @sicktricks95
      @sicktricks95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitbraindev what do you consider the twist or unique aspect to your new design versus other games of the genre?

    • @bitbraindev
      @bitbraindev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sicktricks95 Excellent question! I'd say: the Dwarves themselves will play a big part. Also the fact that on the surface this game looks like a cute pixelart game, however, the player could go and do gruesome things if they wanted. Design-wise quite the opposite of, let's say, Stardew Valley (which tries to be positive and free of aggression)

    how did you/would implement custom items , like a pickaxe that mines a 3x3 area every 3rd swing or a sword that shoots a projectile , most games use a simple Resource for their items so that wouldn't really be possible

    • @bitbraindev
      @bitbraindev  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The problem is mostly around separation of concerns. You want to separate your "data" from your "behaviour" and you can do that through composition. You basically "stick" them together like LEGO bricks and combined they are an item, an NPC or whatever you like.
      In my game, all items are described as resources. Those resources define configuration such as visuals, sound, naming and logic. However, the logic itself is not part of the resource but the resource just contains information about what logic to use.
      I'll show this sort of stuff in a future devlog for sure!

    • @bananadog111
      @bananadog111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are your thoughts after watching the video?

    • @TsviBriga
      @TsviBriga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pritheebecareful7070 I don't know. in one hand, the work he did until this moment was just just for the sake of learning godot, so i guess its ok to plan somthing else now. in the other hand, its really fills like he just got bored of his own game, and now he take all his biggest dreams and throw them on the game. instead of searching for flaws in the game mechanics, and how to make the game better, he just make the game more hard to produce. the ability to kill NPCs is super complex mechanic. its sound cool, of course, but its way to ambitious.
      he could release this game and start a new one with more focus on story. but he didn't. maybe he thought the game isn't good enough now. I don't think this changes is the right solution.
      and any developer need some wins. to start a project and to make it to the final line. to release it. to be proud of it. he was smart when he started learning godot. you should focus on small project. so why not sticking with that?

    • @bitbraindev
      @bitbraindev  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The current game has nothing to offer though. I released plenty of free games in the past before. Yes, I got bored of the current vision because it is not a game I want to build. Mainly, this game is a project I always wanted to build, it is ambitious but there is no other game I would like to work on right now. My goal is not to make this commercially successful either. I just want to build something I personally enjoy playing.

    • @TsviBriga
      @TsviBriga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitbraindev I don't care about commercial success. I'm just afraid you set yourself for disappointment. I'm not professional in this areas, but its feels very ambitious. and if your core mechanics will not be good enough, the story will not save it. and when you build the mechanics around the story, you don't have enough freedom to explore. when you start with prototyping of the core gameplay loop, its much easier to build the story around it.
      don't you agree with me on that?

    • @TsviBriga
      @TsviBriga 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      but of course I really respect you and your decisions. what you do is amazing and beautiful.
