- UPDATE: Pleasure Beach will be opening on July 3, 2021!
----------
This video was shot in 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Here's hoping we can head to Pleasure Beach in 2021!
Pleasure Beach was once a destination for fun, but then became notorious. In the last several years, the beach has been (and is being) revitalized, with an ambitious plan for a very nice park.
Join my family as we head to Pleasure Beach to see what it's all about!

I was there as a child in the 1950’s and rode all the rides and actually swam over to it with a buddy in the 1960’s I think, from Ten Cent Point in Stratford at low tide. We were looking for a job. The roller coaster was a legend, shaking and creaking and fast and the carousel was a work of art and even had the brass ring you reached for. If you got it you got a free ride. The bumper cars were great too..I think the town of Stratford owned part of the island and that’s why cottages were there on the end part of the island. After the bridge burned the politicians in Bridgeport wanted this place to die and never would rebuild the bridge. They sure got their way. Too bad because it was a great place. I think the horses from the carousel have been preserved at Beardsley Park in Bridgeport. Sadly Bridgeport was once a powerhouse of industrial manufacturing and the tool and die industry. This is where Bridgeport Machine was along with Remington, Carpenter Steel, Bryant Electric, Warner Manufacturing, Harvey Hubble, Singer Sewing Machine, Metropolitan Body that made the METRO delivery trucks, GE Wire and Cable, International Bakeries that made Wonder Bread, Acme Shear, and many many others. Remington even had a special place where they blended gunpowder for the Czar of Russia. Think it was over on Stratford Road as gun manufacturing was further downtown. Even the old Locomobile automobile was produced here from 1900 to 1929. Politics, and resistance to change and adaptation hurt Bridgeport badly along with cheaper foreign production. It’s history is truly amazing though if you care to study it. Even P.T. Barnum was once the Mayor here and there is still a museum by his name. The city survives today but only a shadow of it great past. Two beautiful movie theatres were there also, the Lowes Poli and the Lowes Majestic. Don’t know if they are still standing but their interior architecture was absolutely beautiful. Some of her past structures are still there if you care to look for them.
That old bridge just caught fire lol it happens all the time. Crooked town for years i fished Pleasure beach every day as a kid
That old bridge was not new or built for that location. It served its first 100 years as a RR bridge at another location, then was moved to Bridgeport in the WWII era. (forgot the exact date) Rumor has it the cause of the fire was probably a discarded butt tossed out of a passing car that set the wooden structure on fire. 150 year old wood is like that, right?
@@rupe53 i drove over that rickety bridge almost every day with my uncle and his 1974 Maverick to snapper fish at pleasure beach as a kid I doubt a cigarette would light them railroad ties. The politicians wanted pleasure breach closed down
@@tinman4585 yeah, probably not directly, but if that butt got into a bird's nest on the side of the structure, that would do it. I recall hearing that on the local news because the FD stated there were no other malfunctions to blame, which is how they were able to swing the bridge open after the fire.
@@rupe53 well i hope it wasn’t my butt🤣 we used to fish in the morning and go to windmill for a Millers hot dog and a beer for lunch
I grew up less than a mile from this beach. That horrendous bridge is why I’m afraid of bridges to this day! smh lol That said, once I was across it I loved fishing with my parents and searching for shells and hermit crabs with my grandfather. I’m from the East End, but I haven’t lived in CT in many years. Thanks for helping me to relive some really great childhood memories. ✌🏾
My hometown ❤️💪🏾
I remember attending a Bobby Rydell concert in that pavilion on PB. Had to be in the late 50's. The park was a fun place to be and the roller coaster was wonderful.
This beach is lovely. I do take time out to visit it when I can. I do remember going over that rickety old bridge to go to the Polka Dot Playhouse to see a show. That bridge was scary. It is a shame that it was burned down.

I grew up on the east side of Bridgeport and used to go to PB record hops every Friday night. I hope the beach area (seen in this video)
can be maintained and kept clean. I will try to visit there this summer.
Yeah, this was 2019 and I believe it was closed all of 2020. It’s a beautiful beach. I hope we can visit again this year as well.
Thanks ....I always remember this place
Spent time there a few years ago, just before they tore down the houses. My brother got lucky enough to rent one from the original owner and since we had a boat we could go over and hang at the rental house on weekends. Not too bad since the water and power was on till near the end. The residents there had to do all of the maintenance so it wasn't perfect, but it was quite relaxing to be basically isolated while within ear shot of the city.
Hey thanks for the update this is very interesting I just moved to Connecticut
Coastline is polluted
Well done
Miss my home
Great memories in the early 1960's in the summertime. East Main St.......Torpedo was there.
James Brown used to perform in that pavilion. It was called the Polka Dot Playhouse.
