Very useful tip - explained simply and clearly. Perfect for when you do not have a reference object/light source, but you need to know how to express a translucent object.

I've just finished painting my photo of a bowl of red globe grapes & some green grapes for my weekly, online class challenge and even though the photo was right there, I found translating to paint, how the light works on them very confusing. I loved watching your demo & listening to your explanation; it has solved some of the questions for me. Many thanks, that's wonderful. ☺

I'm new to painting and came here expecting to see you use a medium with your paint to get translucent colors. And while I think this might still be possible, your video unexpectedly opened my eyes to the fact that this can be achieved with the colors alone. That got you a new subscriber and a like. Thanks for the insight, sir.

Thanks for a great teaching. You are a great teacher. Have you ever thought about teaching how to paint a complete painting for those who need help in completing a painting? There are many teachings on youtube and I think, if you have time, you should too. Your style is different and you would probably have a great following.

Thanks so much for the nice comment! I may eventually move onto a complete painting video. Mostly it's a factor of working out the logistics of it. My equipment is somewhat primitive so it's hard to get good video of me actually doing a painting on my easel. I did manage to do my pastel demo, but it didn't really show everything the way I wanted. We'll see! :)

That's a great question! It really depends on how thick the material of the object is. You wouldn't really get that effect from grapes probably, but certain types of glass would have a light area in the shadow coming through. Thanks for watching! :)

Great demo! Will you do anything on clouds? I'm stuck as to what colors to use and brush techniques.

You should show an example of an object painting in the style of alla prima and the same object with the indirect style using glazes

Thanks for watching! Yes, this is the alla prima method, but the principles of where/how to place the lights and darks remain the same whether it's painted in one session or with glazes.

Thanks for watching! I can make a video on this topic for sure. :) In the meantime a fix I can give you is to either try a very soft brush like and inexpensive sable brush or try using a medium with stand oil in it which self-levels and makes a smooth surface. Hope that helps! :)
