I found it quite odd that a kiwi wasn't included in the conservation pack or the twilight pack. Would have fitted both packs superbly. It's endangered, nocturnal and would be the only NZ animal to ever exist in the game.

agree. i also think its kind of a crime that the tasmanian devil and fossa got thrown out of a "nocturnal" pack

I'd still want a kiwi or other non-aviary bird, even if they weren't part of a bird pack. They can stand just fine on their own, or in combination with animals already in the game. I don't think I'm the only one with that position either.

A NZ pack might actually be interesting. Kiwi, Takahe, Yellow eyed penguin, Weka... Decent number of flightless birds. And so many possible exhibit species.

I want waterfowl, it's really weird how PZ still doesn't have any considering how popular duck ponds are

    • @Antimony96
      @Antimony96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@mamutepeq I think the explanation for PZ's animal choices in general comes down to them being a company that has to make money. The base game focused mostly on big ticket animals ("ABC species" in zoo parlance) like great apes, big cats, elephants, bears, etc. and most of the DLC have also focused on adding the remaining big popular animals like polar bears, penguins, etc. Note that I'm not even talking about "PZ fans here" but casual gamers.
That being said, the Europe pack did very well despite not including any of those "big" animals so maybe Frontier thinks that they can afford to go with more niche choices. Fingers crossed for birds next.

      @lasschesteven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Antimony96 In that regard, I'd say kiwis and secretary birds are at least as appealing to the casual gamer with some interest in animals as the beavers, raccoons, and sun bears we've already seen as DLC mascots before.

I agree with a lot of stuff you said, but your comments on birds do seem a little skewed by the fact that you are not that much into birds yourself, as you mentioned.
I have a hard time believing that the average player wouldn't find something like a pelican more interesting than another canine.

Overall I liked your video and you were right about certain things like the Lar Gibbon not being that relevant anymore, but a wolverine is a very distinct and the desire for one doesn't diminish with the addition of a lynx or badger.
    Regarding your essential animals list:
The following I would agree are essential and loved by the entire community:
    Two/Three Toed Sloth
    Fossa
    Dromedary
    Tasmanian Devil
    Crested Porcupine
    Maned Wolf
    Matschie's Tree Kangaroo (or Goodfellow)
These I assume you just personally like because I only see a few specific people ask for these, and I can do without them:
    Hamadryas Baboon
    Red River Hog
Instead I would replace those two with two animals that I know the community loves and wishes for every time:
    Coati
    Armadillo
    P.S.

    #teamAndeanBear

I don’t quite understand your argument that non-aviary birds don’t belong in the meta wish list. If anything, they should be priority over mammals at this point. The game will feel unbalanced and unfinished if our only habitat birds are flamingos, ostriches, peafowl, cassowaries, penguins, and cranes. Honestly, I’d say birds like the emu, kiwi, swan, pelican, and ibis should be above all the mammals, save for the few super popular ones like the tassie devil and sloth. (Your own meta wish list seemed very accurate, except for the lack of birds!)

14:09 "Is it worth getting [ground and aquatic birds] unless we get a bird pack?" YES!!! We are desperate in need of birds, flighted or otherwise. And I absolutely consider the likes of emus, ducks, pelicans, kiwis, and gamefowl all to be essential zoo animals - they unfortunately don't have much legacy value as previous zoo simulation games overlooked them. But it was wrong then and it's wrong now.
And I challenge anyone to go to any major zoo and not see at least one previous mentioned terrestrial or aquatic bird. GIVE ME BIRDS OR GIVE ME DEATH.

    • @ShempHoward2
      @ShempHoward2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wouldn't it make more sense if we got the main bird pack beforehand and *then* got bonus birds with subsequent DLCs? Same deal with the Aquatic Pack and subsequent aquatic animals being the African penguin, California sea lion, American alligator, Asian small-clawed otter, platypus, spectacled caiman, etc. All those animals wouldn't have made sense without deep-diving and the Aquatic Pack coming before.

It’s cool to see just how much variety there is in people’s wishlists.
My hope is that planet zoo focuses on adding new features, new things to do, more challenges, and add flying birds. As someone who has played the game since the start, I’d like new challenges to spark my interest in playing the game. I love all the updates and additions to the game, but very few have actually made a new experience in the game for me.

Now that the Twilight Pack is introducing flying foxes and a story mode, I think Planet Zoo might actually be moving in that direction. Especially since it added animals that the devs just felt were necessary, rather than what the community was mainly voting for.

  • @randomgoatpz5085
    @randomgoatpz5085 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hi, random goat here.
First things first: fair video and some fair points, it’s your constructive opinion after all. It is true that the main issue of the meta-wishlist becomes very apparent with the Lar gibbon specially, that's undeniable. I’ll just say that the Lar Gibbon was always the top gibbon choice since the beginning, and up until today people are still voting for it (to be precise, 3 of the last 10 entries included the lar gibbon). And by the way, people who voted for a ‘general gibbon’ are free to resubmit their vote to another animal.
    This being said…
By all means, the meta-wishlist is not perfect. It was conceived as a way of grouping together the animals that the (forum) community deemed ‘essential’ or desirable to be added in their eyes. Before the meta-wishlist, people would just write or post their random animal wishes everywhere with no way of tracking them or actually make them meaningful. It was all a huge mess and the worst part was the same people ranting and complaining about the animal choices in the early DLCs. Like, ‘do you really think posting a wishlist in a random discord server will have any effect?’. That still happens as we speak, but the meta-wishlist alleviated this problem.
It can never be perfect and 100% updated unless it’s started from scratch every time a DLC is released. Is that feasible, though? You’d need someone (me? no thanks I have a job) to essentially be a slave and record hundreds of votes every three months. But, most importantly, would it make it more meaningful? This is where, in my opinion, you contradict yourself.
I’ll explain: your main claim here is that the meta-wishlist doesn’t reflect the actual desire of the community. More than 550 people have participated so far. That number is ridiculous if you compare it to the total playerbase, obviously. But how do you expect that number to be as high or even higher if the list had to be updated every 3 months? As you said, the list started a long ago; indeed, it has taken almost 2 years to get to 550 votes. I highly doubt you’d get a reliable alternative meta-wishlist with more than 100-200 users every 3 months.
Not to mention that attempting to do something like this in a different platform like reddit, youtube, discord or whatever would very soon go out of control and it’d be impossible to verify if every user is legit, etc.
As I said, the current meta-wishlist is not ideal but at least it's a good indicator of what the community wants, at least one with enough sample size and arguably reliable. I'd be glad to know of a better alternative.
I also see a huge issue with how you suggest to categorize animals, which is basically your own subjective way. We’ve had this discussion in discord before and you still refuse to accept that categorizing by species is the only objective way of classifying animals (I mean, this is quite obvious). Why? well, in this very video you show how, in the general list, grouping animal in artificial subjective groups (caprids, pigs, etc. I actually made these skewed categories to make a point) just doesn’t work and is ultimately skewed. Where is the line to differentiate each category? Should you define it? Should I define it? Who says an animal is distinct enough to be either included or left out of a group? Don’t you see the issue that arises when you deviate from the actual scientific classification?
All in all, I can understand your concerns with the list itself and some deficiencies it might have. However, at the same time I cannot help think how your dissatisfaction with it is just purely based on the fact that you have different preferences. That and that apparently you know what the community truely wants more than anyone else, even though that is based on ….ehm nothing and the meta-wishlist is a factual piece of data.
Needless to say the meta-wishlist is still open for new submissions.
    Best

Lovely answer! We have 3 species of lemur, 2 subspecies of tiger, 4 crocodilians, 2 subspecies of brown bear, 5 species of large canids, why can't we have 2 species of Gibbon or 3 species of foxes? LionRider sees the game through the lents of a modder. I believe he mostly whiches to have more rigs to do more mods (which is legit, nothing wrong with it). However, this is not what, well above 90% of the player base care about. I also think he has an incorrect approach by claiming a lot of things, in name of the community, when in fact he is not the community, he is just one individual with its personal biases. I even bet that a big proportion of the playerbase do not even engage with social media (youtube, discord, facebook, paradox forums, etc).
I pretty much like your list and your work and thank you very much for your contribution to the community!

Don't take this too personally RandomGoat. Lionrider is what we call the "Toxic Gatekeeper" of the modding community. Many people I talk to know him as this too. Everytime lionrider doesn't get his way he either cries about it in discord or makes a 30 minute video proving 0 facts and 0 data and then comes up with a "definitive" Wishlist which is in reality animals he wants in his personal opinion. Whenever the modding community doesn't get a insane new rig to work with... They cry. It's really pathetic and I'm surprised people are still falling for this guy. He never compromises and he time and time again fails to see things in other people's views. I may try to keep a more solid count but so far I counted 21 bits that are actual misinformation within this video. He straight up lies to the people. It's disgusting.

The problem with this stems from a lot of things. First I think it has to be accepted that the actual wishlist of animals desired is basically infinite, equivalent not merely to the total number of species but various subspecies and regional variants as well. That can not be realistically achieved so there will be compromises inevitably. But beyond that different people have very different criteria for putting animals on the list. For example, I am uninterested in any modding of planet zoo at all after I came to realize that modding in Zoo Tycoon 2 basically ruined the game for me resulting in me spending massive hours managing mods and not actually playing the game because the modders were not interested in the game the same way I was so I had to go in and fix things to try to make them work they way I wanted them to. So I am completely unconvinced by the desire for more unique rigs - unique rigs do not add an once of potential game enjoyment for me outside of the species the rig represents in the unmodded game - is that representative of the player base at large? - not sure but if it does any arguments based on benefits to modders (creators or users of mods) will ring hollow. Do the players play the game or find the game gets in the way of their desire to build digital models - these people want very different things. Is your internal image of a zoo more like one depicted in cartoons or children's toys, because if it is the animals you want are going to be very different (and probably much less specific) than from someone who is interested in zoology. Once you get past determining what a "normal" user of PZ is (most likely impossible task anyway) You need to actually have good data to make determinations. Results from a poll are only as good as the robustness of the poll itself, if it does not accurately represent the actual playerbase it will not be very informative and would be actively bad to make decisions based on it.

Also actually most popular animal is the sloth. Taking into account no one ever put both sloth species into their list, every vote count as unique person. First place with 49% of people wanting it.
Second place would be occupied by crested porcupine with 47% of votes.
Third by tasmanian devil with 45%
Tree kangaroo would skyrocket being as popular as emu.

    Long comment incoming 😅:
There’s a lot of food for thought from this video. I agree that the Meta-wishlist has had its time by now and I think any renewed attempts at a Meta-wishlist miss the point of what the wishlist was supposed to be. It was supposed to be an ESSENTIAL wishlist, a noticeboard to highlight species that the game would feel genuinely incomplete without. At the time, that meant things like sea lions, alligators, ASCO’s, capybaras, etc that we fortunately got as time went on.
I think its misusing the intent of the thread to just put personal wishlists on it, especially when some of the species high on the meta-wishlist are extremely rare in zoos and I seriously doubt the majority of the people who chose those animals have actually seen that species in person at a zoo. The Shoebill being 25th typifies this for me. There are barely a dozen zoos across the world that house Shoebills. I’ve been lucky enough to go to one and see a Shoebill in person and they're incredible animals, but in a zero-sums game that is adding species in Planet Zoo, it would be silly including Shoebills over say Grey Crowned Cranes or Great White Pelicans; two African habitat birds that are far, far, far more common in zoos but have less votes than the Shoebill on the meta-wishlist. That’s bonkers to me! [like the Eastern Black Rhino not being number 1 but I digress 😛]
Ultimately, the meta-wishlist has no tangible effect on what species get into the game. At best, it may tie-break between species that Frontier were already planning on adding (E.g., we should include a Common Wombat instead of a Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat if we add a wombat to Planet Zoo as the community has expressed more interest in the former). Frontier curating themselves what species get into the game based on what they wanted for the base game and the packs is better than blindly following a popularity contest from a small data-set. Though admittedly Frontier aren't faultless with the choices they've made; especially when they add species that don't appear in zoos (I’ll never forgive them for including the Bengal Tiger over the Sumatran, they wasted a slot in the Wetlands Pack on the Wild Water Buffalo and the less said about the Himalayan Brown Bear the better 😑).
If the meta-wishlist had its time again, it should have been redone, after every pack, anew so a new dataset could be taken without relic votes skewing things; kind of like how the meta-suggestions list is restarted after every update.

    @dodoxasaurus6904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Ground birds should not be separate from fully flying birds, that just sounds stupid, sorry but is just downright a stupid take, almost sounds like favoritism!?
On you Kiwi rant, I would have to say that yes even though it wouldn't work well to mix cassowary with a kiwi, I mean at the end of the day, when the game will eventually be done, the game should at least have an equal spread of all animal groups, even if a Bird pack would be limited if they are in set exhibits like the bat might be.
I don't think, because they can't find a great way to implement birds in a good way is a good enough reason to just say "Oh lets just save it for animals that actually work as habitat animals".
That seems like a bias on your side.
A general arrangement of animals should be how the game ends off. even if it is a little scuffed.
Its Planet Zoo, not 'Where the player base mostly resides Zoo'

@@dylanderyckere8077 I mean... look at the animals in the game. Most of them are copies. Especially the base game falls into this trap... we could have had a more diverse base game with more unique animals instead of a lot of reskins (Did we really need 3 bears in the base game for example, especially 2 that are similair looks wise and the Himalayan Brown Bear that gets overshadowed anyways due to the more popular Grizzly and instead of the Himalayan Brown Bear, put Binturong in the base game, did we really need both the Chimpansee and Bonobo, swap the Bonoba out for a Baboon, did we really need Springbok in the base game and the Thomson Gazelle as a deluxe animal, could have easily swapped out one of them for the Nile Lechwe in the base game, did we really need the Nyala and Bongo, who look similair design wise, could have easily swapped one out for the Greater Kudu). And this is just my rant of the copies in the base game, we get copies in every pack and some of the animals in the DLC packs are redundant if we already have a lot of them in the game (Did we really need the Sun Bear when we already have 4 others, did we really need the Dhole and the Dingo, did we really need the Arctic fox with the Arctic wolf already being in the game, did we really need the Amur Leopard when we already have the Snow and the Clouded).

Videos with constructive feedback on things rather than just complaining are well received in my feed. I don't like speculating at all.
What intrigues me is how people make these wishlist without thinking of PZ as a game. Even if you don't care about franchise mode, there are rules this game follows for procession and representation of certain species over other. That's why an South-American, Australian, and European pack where so necessary.
But there's another aspect I wished people would think of more: rigs and animation sets. I'd argue for as many different rigs as possible so that modding (though unsupported officially) can easily reproduce missing animals that share them. Receiving copy paste animals from Frontier is the main reason why the packs don't interest me enough: asking for more canids, antelopes, bears etc. feels like a waste. We can endlessly argue whether we need another zebra or instead another bear, but why don't we agree that we all rather have Tasmanian Devils, Secretary Birds, and many more primates.

  • @samrandles5396
    @samrandles5396 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

At this point we want to be looking to maximise the rigs we have available, so that we can get gap fillers for Mods.
If I wanted to I could draw up a list of 500 animals I deemed essential, but if we only have another year left of DLCs its irrelevant as we will have a maximum of 34 animals (3x Animal Packs and 2x Scenery Packs) and this is assuming we have another full year.

We need more non-mammal habitat animals. Coconut crab, Giant Salamander, Alligator Snapping Turtle, Kiwi or Emu are all great species which could diversify the current selection.

    @nickdentoom1173 ปีที่แล้ว

You know this was made before the Grasslands pack... else the Maned Wolf wouldn't be mentioned cuz it got added.
I as well think its between Hamadryas or Gelada (But i feel like Gelada is more likely, cuz more popular and also seems to be the most calm Baboon).
Another highly requested animal i have seen is any subspecies of Takin.
However, as seen in a lot of animal packs (And other packs as well), we get unique animals and reskin animals (Recent Grasslands DLC is even more supporting of this, seeing the Blue Wildebeest, Striped Hyena, Caracal and Emu, which are essentially reskins of animals we already have in the game, despite some cosmetic differences).
Lets Look at every Pack and their animals
    Arctic pack
    Unique: Dall Sheep, Reindeer
Reskin: Polar Bear, Arctic Wolf (Those 2 are kinda unavoidable because of the wolf and the bears we already have in base game)
    South America pack
    Unique: Llama, Capuchin, Giant Anteater
Reskin: Jaguar (Which is kinda unavoidable due to the cats we already have in the game)
    Australia Pack
    Unique: Red Kangaroo, Koala
Reskin: Dingo, Cassowary (Template for the Emu is there, only need to alter the template, which essentially makes it a reskin, cuz you don't need to make the template from scratch)
    Aquatic pack
Unique: King Penguin, Grey Seal, Giant Otter
    Reskin: Caiman
    SEA animal pack
    Unique: Binturong, Probicus Monkey
Reskin: Sun Bear, Dhole, Clouded Leopard, Malayan Tapir, Babirusa
    Africa Pack
    Unique: Meerkat
Reskin: African Penguin, Fennec Fox, Southern White Rhino
    NA Animal Pack
    Unique: American Beaver, Moose
Reskin: Prairie Dog, Alligator, Californian Sea Lion, Arctic Fox
    Europe Pack
    Unique: European Badger
Reskin: Fallow Deer, Alpine Ibex, Eurasian Lynx
    Wetlands pack
    Unique: Capybara, Platypus
Reskin: Nile Lechwe, Wild Water Buffalo, Small Clawed Otter, Red Crowned Crane, Spectacled Caiman
    Conservation pack
    Unique: Przewalski horse
Reskin: Siamang, Amur Leopard, Scymitar Horned Oryx
    Twillight Pack
Unique: Raccoon (Although you can debate if they haven't used the Binturong or Badger template), Skunk
    Reskin: Wombat, Red Fox
    Grasslands pack
Unique: Maned Wolf, Nine-Banded Armadillo, Red-Necked Wallaby
Reskin: Emu, Caracal, Striped Hyena, Blue Wildebeest (Did we really need it).
Now, since the Grasslands Pack added the Maned Wolf out of this list... we can take it off this list.
Looking at it though, the Tree Kangaroo, Sloth and the Tasmian Devil seem to be the unique ones, while the others seem to be the Reskins (And yes, you can argue about the Porcupine, but i feel like they can use the Anteater Template for the body structure).
Another look at this list, means we can get some reskin animals that aren't highly requested by the community, but are included because the template is basically already there. Main animal for this imo is the Vicuna, but also the Musk Ox or Wisent.

The only issue that the random goat's list has is that it should have been reset from 0 after each new pack. Apart from that I think it is pretty much very accurate in representing the animals people want. The broader community (90%) does not care about new rigs (they do not care about the mods' potential), they want their unique species - which honestly is pretty valid! That is the reason why we got jaguars, pumas and leopards. They are just big cats (which the game has plenty of) but people wanted their uniqueness and their geographical representation! The same can be sad about the American alligator (the game already had 2 crocodilians) or the malayan tapir (highly requested but it is just a copy of the baird's tapir). And then I don't think frontier does its decision making based on that list anyways (we are just misguiding ourselves in believing so). Lastly what people perceive as essential is an absolute vague concept. It can be their fav animal, the fauna of their native country, the animals they have in their local zoo, a species they want to mix with species A or B that already exists in the game, etc... it's completely biased. The list itself does not define what essential means.
And honestly, what I wish to see in the game would be new features (real game changing features) instead of just more animals and scenery. Whatever animals or scenery they add, the gameplay remains almost the same as in the release day. We don't have new rides, types of foods, feeders, we still lack essential behaviours (mammals nursing would have been much more popular than animals playing with trash bins), and new play mechanics (better zoo management simulation - harder breeding, breeding failure, animal transportation costs, deeper staff simulation, etc). The game has tons of content but the gameplay still feels quite basic and shallow. I can open my zoo with giant pandas if I wich in franchise. In ZT2 you would have to excel first to reach a level of prestige, high enough to obtain certain species. That was so realist.

When making the general animal list, the numbers should have been averaged for how many different species went into each one. For instance, if there were 6 Caprid species, the group should have been given an average of 69. Comparing a group with only a single animal to a group with multiple ones badly skews the data.

In the latest Frontier financial report it was clearly stated that PZ has sold over 3 million units. It is their best performing game ever and will soon overtake JWE 2 by their own projections.
In my opinion is not a question of issues with the metawishlist, is that it truly serves no purpose and all it has done is confused Frontier and create roster disasters like the one just witnessed.
At best you have a couple thousand unique players participating in this list (out of 3+ millions) at worse a bunch of fake Frontier forum accounts under the same users trying to push an agenda for their niche animal picks.
There are 1000s of Zoo and conservation relevant animal species that deserve to be part of this game, instead we got a nocturnal pack with a skunk, raccon and fox, even the Wombat is an ok pick at best.
The creator of this list has a lot to answer for.

I don't think frontier takes the meta wishlist as gospel like the community implies. Yeah the newest pack is pretty basic and underwhelming outside of the bats and the wombat, but the other three animals are fairly common in zoos or as educational ambassador animals.

Let me answer: this whole response made me laugh.
Out of all things I would have never expected to be held accountable for is what Frontier choose to include in their DLCs xD
All I do is disinterestedly gather data about what the PZ community animal preferences are. The meta-wishlist is not the bible, Frontier can do with it as they please. I believe it is a useful tool though.
If you're so concerned about too many Europeans or Frontier fake accounts (lol) participating please go ahead and post a list yourself.

I want to love Planet Zoo,but it's clear to me that Frontier just sees it as a cashgrab. I mean, seriously, look at the DLC structure of ZT2 versus PZ. ZT2 had a handful of DLCs, each with added mechanics and tens of new species. PZ gets a low-effort "animal pack" once per quarter, with 5 animals, most of which are simple reskins of existing animals.
I feel like the PZ community is like the community for EA games. They just buy, buy, buy, and they *love* it. No complaining about the business practices of the Holy Creators, no yearning for something more. I haven't seen pretty much anybody saying "hey, why are we paying money for what would be a free update in many other games? I want actual improvement and significant content, or I'm not buying!". Until that happens, we won't get anything but the bare minimum effort put into the game.

The game is already too skewed with african and asian mammals. Just about every pack has been oops all mammals, especially ones with similar rigs. Ungulates, cats, and canids dominate the roster. The game needs more habitat birds and reptiles (free the iguanas) as well as animals with more unique rigs like the coconut crab or sloths. People in the community use the wishlist as a be all end all for what dlc will be and should be and it's a bit disappointing.
