Mini Motorways is a highway engineering puzzle game and in this video I, a highway designer of 10 years, see if my real life engineering skills help me become better at the Mini Motorways puzzle game by taking everything I have learned so far to the extreme to fix bad traffic!

Imagine shops opening at random with no demand (*cough* yellow *cough*) and then blaming the city when not enough shoppers show up

US suburbs be like:
I feel like the game could do with another item: the stop sign. It would connect three or four roads at 90 degrees, giving the right of way to a 180 degree pair of roads. Cars with the right of way wouldn't slow down when going straight, but the other(s) would have to come to a full stop before entering. Basically a rigid traffic light to allow for something of a main street vs side streets.
They could also make T-junctions slightly faster than crossroads. Or at least make slip lanes faster

Yeah but I think route-planning is all down to the individual drivers. Who suck at it. That's the challenge of the game, sculpting the roads so that the drivers, with their 3 little neurons, have to drive like sensible people whether they like it or not. They can't add features that just make it easier, that convey your wishes to the little drivers. Everything has to be a tool that works in a certain way. The nearest thing you get to "help" is a motorway, and they're limited.
I love it but its advantage would be its downside i think it would only do good in the beginning
It makes sense that Wellington is a super hard level. The council has spent years trying to improve things and getting nowhere.

If I played this game, I'd regularly pause, remove EVERYTHING and try to build it more organized. It would be chaos lol
all the cars have to finish their current routes and the new roads don't exist til then. late game road construction can easily tank your run
Ye maybe just delete and rebuild the roads that are unnecesary/Inefficient.

3:20 top tips! Shop entrance count as “driveways” so cars won’t slow down for them unless there’s a car coming out, like houses.

@@steveyk.7099it sure is! The shop connections are driveways like the houses, so they don’t slow down the road just by being connected.
Wow my home city in a game, unheard of. Surprised how accurate it was with the massive roundabout there (Basin Reserve), and Mt Vic tunnel. Just no bridges or tunnels over the harbour in reality. He gave it a good go

Matt, I’m so happy that every single episode you explain the game over again, many people would get upset about the redundancy but I think it’s really important and nice that you spend the time to explain the rules so that everyone is aware of what’s going on
Am I wrong in thinking this is a prime example of a good time to totally rip up the layout mid game? Feel like that would fix a lot of the issues
I think it's technically possible, but the cars have to drive back to the house to get rid of everything... it'd put a big queue and some time on the timer at minimum

City Planner Plays did a video where he did a 'Mulligan Monday.' Basically, after getting each week's upgrade, he'd look over the road network and see where it could be changed. Worked fairly well, though some commenters mentioned that he didn't change *enough* each week to be effective.

It’s 2:30 in the morning, can’t sleep and this video came across my main TH-cam page. I don’t know if it’s the game, the voice, the accent or the intro but I am really enjoying this video. It’s truly relaxing and satisfying to see you connect roads and see cars just move from one place to the other. You even made me feel like an engineer in your intro. This is just perfect. Keep going! I really have enjoyed this video so far and trust me when I say that I’ve just started to go down the rabbit hole:) Thank you for making my insomnia (don’t have it, just have a lot of energy still) that much more enjoyable:)

@@tycunningham1297 Are roundabouts designed better across the pond? Because even here in Canada, I never ever want to encounter one. Just seems like a recipe for disaster, even if it's efficient
@@ghostdude9415 As far as I have understood it, they aren’t better designed over here. There are just A LOT more. That means that every driver is used to them, and knows how to navigate them properly thus rendering them a non issue. Here in Denmark people actually complain more about intersections than roundabouts.
@@ghostdude9415 roundabouts are only efficient if they are sized sufficiently for their traffic load, and the largest roundabouts actually still need signal lights to be efficient.
I watch the Australian Dash Cam videos and I've come to the conclusion that any multi-lane roundabout is a terrible idea and should never be implemented.

At 6:21, if instead of connecting that road at 90 degrees, you point it diagonally downwards, I think you end up with one long road and no junctions
I watched the whole series, bought the game and now I am addicted.
We need more mini motorways
...This mess makes me quite appreciate living in an area where the towns all at least seem to have been planned from the beginning and thus follow a simple grid pattern for the most part.
Some places like Wellington were planned before settlers had even gotten to the country, and so they weren't awear of the hills and such, so you get super steep hills, with roads that don't account for that and things

Wellington is a biatch of a map. The devs mustn't want anyone to visit their home town because doing the Wellington map gives me anxiety.
IRL we've had discussions and consultations on a second tunnel through Mount Victoria for a decade now.

@@StephBer1 We do, we really do. There's talk of making it just for busses/bikes/pedestrians and a possible tram at a later point. That would only leave the old tunnel, one lane each way, for cars.

@@StephBer1 Yes, but we don't have the room for sprawl. We're just increasing density now, and roads won't cope, so we need high density transport. Hence bicycles, busses, walking, and maybe light rail.

I know how you're supposed to use the traffic lights in the game what you do is use them at four ways it where multiple colors integrate so basically it's like a roundabout but you could stop one car color and have the other go through so it doesn't congest multiple colors together and make it hard to make out where to go basically traffic lights if you get enough of them they're basically better roundabouts to where it doesn't get congested as much
