Mega hit in Chicago both WLS pop and Herb Kent r and b charts. Pride of Chicago's southside Englewood area. Classic soul doo wop soul recorded with the Dukays and probably done tongue in cheek as that style by 1962 was fading away in the black community. Unsurpassed singer especially the falsetto part in this song. Most covers of this doo wop classic trivialize or make a parody of it like Sha Na Na. He was known mostly as a soul singer performer in the sixties. Duke of Earl was the anthem of the white south side greaser community.

I met Gene Chandler at a La Quinta hotel in New York. Very friendly person.
He did it again on PBS in the early 90s.. Never lost his voice
"Groovy Situation" is another good song by him.
