I was seven years old in 1970 and Parnelli Jones patted me on the head in Loudon NH. Maybe because I was a little red head and he actually was too. I loved the old Trans Am races in Loudon. Mark Donahue had switched to the AMC that year.

I was there at the opening round at Laguna Seca in 1970. I was rooting for Penske's Javelins as I was a huge fan of Mark Donohue. I was completely blown away how dominating the Bud Moore Mustangs were in the race . . . which calling it a race was an over-statement. Although the field was well-represented with cars from multiple US automotive makes, they all spread apart at the green flag, and settled down to a running parade of Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Challengers, and Barracudas. Laguna Seca is given props for being a very picturesque circuit, but for race cars engaged in wheel-to-wheel dueling, it is disappointing in that respect.

TheLocalLoco. Let's not overlook legendary early Ford NASCAR driver Fireball Roberts. Not many drivers brought fans out of their seats like #22!

I'm sure you have a point I'm sure it is bigger than what I know or understand, never in all my years has any Ford Chevy or Mopar person come to me and say how amazing that American Motors dominated Trans Am and did so well. As great as they were Penske and Donahue, still getting credit is like pulling teeth. American Motors was an amazing company that cared and busted their butt to compete with one two and three. Penske Donohue and American Motors have all my respect. I am very happy for Ford Motor Company and these guys.

@@4orrcountry I was a young kid listening to my transistor radio (made in Japan) outside my house when Roberts hit the wall and flipped. Still burnt into my memories.

Bud Moore's "skinny leaf springs"....they made them only 1.25" wide and put spherical bearings in the spring eyes, instead of bushings & pins....the Watt's linkage centers everything and the leaf springs don't twist and bind under load in a corner.

Ed Cain Your real close. No Watts link. They did not hold up. It did have a PHR and different leaf spring rates and mounting points. Lincoln 4 pot front brakes (Kelsey Hayes units) and moved the stock front brakes to the rear. Cam was changed along with different valve springs. Bud Moore balanced and Blue printed the motor. Put the car on a diet and added weight to help balance. Brake ducts and MANY hours of testing. Still more road car than race car. ALL THE PARTS ON THIS BOSS could be ordered from Ford.
