The flag, Dannebrog, is MUCH older than you narrate in this video. The common belief is that it has been the flag since 1219. Although that might not be a 100% historical fact, the name, DANNEBROG, is found in 1380. You have only focused on 'official' changes to the format, not the origin of the flag.
In the early 13th century, the Danish king Valdemar Sejr (Valdemar the Victorious) led his army on a crusade in present-day Estonia. During a The Battle of Lyndanisse or Lindanise (now Tallinn, Estonia) on June 15, 1219, the Danes were on the defensive when suddenly a red banner with a white cross fell from the sky. As a result, the luck changed, the Danish army won, and Denmark got its flag
The flag found and brought home most likely was a German Crusaders flag, as they fought close by, as also named in Malta, with a very similar Crusaders Flag now being used as theirs! The original flag is kept in a now German Church, south of the Border and it of course looks very much different from the present used flags! But it is a nice and very convincing story!!!!

Fun fact: Denmark and Equatorial Guinea are the only two countries in the world where the capital is placed on an island even there is a great part of land attached to a continent.
And I am danish and worked in Equatorial Guinea. The Capital used to be on the mainland but due to risk of invation from Nigeria and Cameroon they moved the Capital to Bioko.
Funny observation. But then, the continental part of E.Q., Rio Muni, is, I think, a very backward place, and the oil is around Bioko. Sad that the life-long president is another stereotype of African dictators, pocket most of the national income for his family, incl. his jetset son. Years ago, hosting the OAU meeting he bought a 100 black Mercedes to transport each of the other presidents the short distance from the airport to Malabo. While the ordinary people were scavenging the roadside.
Everything that is good in Denmark you also can find in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The difference is the nature. We nordic European countries are old friends in one family.
Too much talk about Copenhagen. Copenhagen is the Capital of Denmark but most people lives on the main Island you call Jutland (in danish Jylland). Fynen (in danish called Fyn) is the second largest island. The main city is Odense, were Hans Christian Andersen is born. If you come to Denmark. Forget about Copenhagen. See the rest of our country.
Notable mentions: - Denmark is one of the oldest countries and monarchies in the world - but also one of the biggest (as the Danes owns Greenland, which is bigger than the size of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom - combined) - Denmark is one of the richest countries in the world (while also being one of the healthiest) that's right ladies, you'll have little issue finding your prince charming here) - Danes tend to be very competitive, so Denmark is rich in sports and especially sports events. - Denmark is known for being quote "home to the giants" as most Danes are relatively tall. - Danes are unlike most other people that you'll find (and that's coming from someone that has traveled the world) as their way of acting is... Well, different. You can't always tell if they like or dislike you, and they're very good at being sarcastic (which obviously doesn't help either) - Most Danes aren't into politics and the whole "social media" world, and will likely think low of you if you happen to be (provided that you tell them about it) - Most Danes aren't very religious despite having churches, they mostly just keep them around to preserve history. - Denmark is home to some of the world's finest restaurants, hereunder Noma, Alchemist, Geranium, Kadeau, and AOC.
@@IvanKristiansen "In the early 17th century, Dano-Norwegian explorers reached Greenland again. When Denmark and Norway separated in 1814, Greenland was transferred to the Danish crown, and was fully integrated in the Danish state in 1953 under the Constitution of Denmark, which made the people in Greenland citizens of Denmark."
@@IvanKristiansen Denmark does in fact own Greenland, and the real reason why America hesitated with their offer, was (other than it being far lower than what Greenland is worth) the tragicomic fact that America is $1,7 trillion in debt. Denmark and Greenland wants little to do with the laughing stock of the world, and can you really blame them?
@@IvanKristiansen "Since 1922, the United Kingdom has been made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales (which collectively make up Great Britain) and Northern Ireland (variously described as a country, province, jurisdiction or region)" "Scotland is governed under the framework of a constitutional monarchy. The head of state in Scotland is the British monarch, currently King Charles III (since 2022)" As for Denmark and Greenland, well, same thing. Greenland is under the Danish crown, meaning that Denmark does in fact own Greenland (but the people that live in Greenland wants to be independent - same as with England and Scotland)
I don't know about the rest of Europe, but at least in all Nordic countries you can drink the tap water. I have always done it here in Sweden, for instance. About islands, if you want many of those, Sweden has the most of them in the world, I think there are 267570 of them here. That's a lot of islands to explore for a coffee break. Sorry for bragging about Sweden, and I like Denmark too, although I've only been there a few couple of times.
You also have a lot of crime (as in a LOT) you talk backwards, and you don't own a continent which would make aforementioned islands in question look incredibly small in comparison. Even if you added twice or even three times the amount. I don't like Sweden, but I will hand it to you Johnny, your landscapes are breathtaking.
@@Aberrantly I don't know what I wrote that was related to crime, but look at the numbers. It's a lot if you compare it with maybe Norway or something, but it's almost nothing compared to the US, for instance (even when population is taken into account, which it usually is). The rest of what you wrote I didn't understand at all. I'm not sure why I would own a continent, so maybe I just don't understand the language well enough. I'm not a native English speaker, obviously.
@@johnnyrosenberg9522 You didn't write (type, technically) anything that was related to crime per se, I just used it as an example of something that makes Sweden a little less great than Denmark (even if taking population differences into account) As for owning a continent, that was just my way of bragging of how much bigger the Danish monarchy technically is compared to Sweden and all of its smaller islands.
My paternal Grandmother was swedish, and she lived in Elsinore (Denmark), so every time we spent a holiday with her at least a couple of Weeks twice a year, we often went on day trips to Helsingborg (Sweden) just across the strait (25 minuttes by ferry). I loved going to Sweden as a kid and a teen, and the landscapes in Sweden are more breathtaking than the Danish. We sometimes rented a cottage in Sweden for a week during summer time. I also liked that many decades before EU was even invented, Denmark, Sweden and Norway formed a union and we trusted each other to a degree that you didn't even had to bring your passport to cross the borders between those countries. It was also always possible for citizens from any of the three Scandinavian countries to settle down and live and/or work in one of the neighbouring countries and students of the Nordic univeristies could roam freely between Denmark, Sweden a d Norway having one of the best exchange student programs. I remember at some stage almost 40 percent of medicine students in Danish universitets were from Sweden. I've always felt a strong bond to my fellow Scandinavian brothers and sisters, and love the fact that we for the most part understand each others languages. It has always during World championships like football or handball been a natural thing to cheer for one of the other Scandinavian countries' national teams if, for example, our own dropped out of the quarter or semi-finals.
@@AberrantlyWell, I guess we could argue back and forth like forever about what is best. 🤪 Just to be very clear, the ”bragging” part of what I wrote in my first comment was meant as a friendly joke between neighbours and the purpose wasn't to start a debate or anything like that. 👍
Once met a Norwegian at our 2nd highest "peak" called "Himmelbjerget". @@HughLeDuc The point I was making is that it's a really nice place be - and especially on a warm spring day it is absolutely beautiful and serene. Just a great day out having a walk up the "mountain" with friends/family. Everyone from Denmark was there to experience that - while the guy from Norway thought he was going on a mountain expedition! Not trying to say other places aren't nice or anything. I've never had a bad time there - and I've probably been there - or in that area at least 100 times.

It's very important to mention that Denmarks tax system is progressive, meaning your tax is decided according to how much you make, meaning you have a lower tax than many other countries if you earn minimum wage, while you'll have one of the highest if not the actual highest if you take home a huge paycheck. Oh yeah, and when you turn 18 and go to school, you'll actually get paid for it.. It's called SU(Statens Uddannelsesstøtte/State Educational Support Grants).
I was just going to remark that the Dannebrog dates back to 1219, when according to legend it fell down from the sky during a battle. But several others have already made this comments, so I don't.
@@IvanKristiansen Yes. According to legend, the first ever copy of the red-white flag fell directly from the sky during a battle in Estonia 15 June 1219 between Christian Danes and pagan Estonians. It was a miracle, a sign from God that the Danes would be victorious.

As a dane i can say when it comes to mountains we ain’t got nothing. We have a place called “Himmelbjerget” or skymountain and its just a big Hill, but its a fun place to hike
Dannebrog(the Danish flag) have been in use for 800 years not just 400, nobody pays 50% tax on their income as in income tax , the average payed income tax is 34%, those who pay the highest rate only pay it on amounts over about 100.000 dollars earned, meaning they pay the lower rate on everything under 100.000 earned, that said with the vat and tax on a lot of things it does end up that high all included , it's just important to separate the two because a lot of people think the income tax is 50% and everything else is on top of that
I don’t think you can solely look at 1 thing we get for paying our high taxes. We gain more then free education plus we help people in our country so that we don’t end up like the US or other countries with big issues such as differences in economy in the households. My problem is the rules and restrictions of everything. Thats how u get urself killed or trumatized, Killing and or hurting the robber/invader will result in you breaking the law and risk being punished for... well, self-defence. But anyways, most taxes i understand but some are just stupid and i quarentee you that many millions get used illegaly which would explain the high tax rates. Fixing this, such as removing real cash would result in lower taxes. And yes i know its not this simple but we have a women in charge after all lmfao TLDR; Highly unnecessary tax rates. Too many rules that simply makes life harder rather then safer/easier.

Great video! We're hoping to visit Denmark this summer.
i hope u get to see more of Denmark than just a city... in the very North of Jutland, in Skagen, u can see 2 seas with different colours meet, but not mix, and stand with 1 foot in each... in Århus, 2nd largest city in Denmark, there's an open air museum, called Den Gamle By (The Old Town) with people and all... a little outside of the Capital Copenhagen, u can go to the oldest amusement park in the world, Bakken, that has a lot of charm to it, and so is the amusement park Tivoli, which is in the Capital, and is the 3rd oldest in the world...
We'd love to have you^^ Visit Vejle beautiful city, and take the bus(30 mins) to Legoland. I would HIGLY recommend using a day at LEGOhouse, It's really worth it.
Summer is the time to be here, hope you are lucky with the weather.
Do remember, get the hell out of Copenhagen as soon as you can.

Well, but 25% of the population lives in Copenhagen..
No, only about 40% live in Jutland
Jylland is not an island. It is the continental part of Denmark which shares border with Germany.
Actually Fyn is only the third largest Island. Sekund largest is Nørrejyske Ø
Du må være jyde.
Notable mentions:
- Denmark is one of the oldest countries and monarchies in the world - but also one of the biggest (as the Danes owns Greenland, which is bigger than the size of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom - combined)
- Denmark is one of the richest countries in the world (while also being one of the healthiest) that's right ladies, you'll have little issue finding your prince charming here)
- Danes tend to be very competitive, so Denmark is rich in sports and especially sports events.
- Denmark is known for being quote "home to the giants" as most Danes are relatively tall.
- Danes are unlike most other people that you'll find (and that's coming from someone that has traveled the world) as their way of acting is... Well, different. You can't always tell if they like or dislike you, and they're very good at being sarcastic (which obviously doesn't help either)
- Most Danes aren't into politics and the whole "social media" world, and will likely think low of you if you happen to be (provided that you tell them about it)
- Most Danes aren't very religious despite having churches, they mostly just keep them around to preserve history.

As for Denmark and Greenland, well, same thing.
@@johnnyrosenberg9522 You didn't write (type, technically) anything that was related to crime per se, I just used it as an example of something that makes Sweden a little less great than Denmark (even if taking population differences into account)
As for owning a continent, that was just my way of bragging of how much bigger the Danish monarchy technically is compared to Sweden and all of its smaller islands.

Altough Denmark is one of the happiest countries in the world (fallen in rank), it's also one of the countries where people take most anti-depressants per citizen.

Not to argue too much with that fact, but i imagine those rankings would look a LOT different if everywhere had Anti-depressants as readily avaliable and affortable as we have (with a doctors perscription ofc)

Dannebrog(the Danish flag) have been in use for 800 years not just 400, nobody pays 50% tax on their income as in income tax , the average payed income tax is 34%, those who pay the highest rate only pay it on amounts over about 100.000 dollars earned, meaning they pay the lower rate on everything under 100.000 earned, that said with the vat and tax on a lot of things it does end up that high all included , it's just important to separate the two because a lot of people think the income tax is 50% and everything else is on top of that
High taxes in Denmark and High VAT (moms) means we can get a public payed education, so just another way off paying....
.. making it available to everyone no dependent on your family’s wealth
I don’t think you can solely look at 1 thing we get for paying our high taxes. We gain more then free education plus we help people in our country so that we don’t end up like the US or other countries with big issues such as differences in economy in the households. Dont get me too wrong on this, i think the taxes and free healthcare and some other things are amazing and hope this country wont change that. My problem is the rules and restrictions of everything. For example: If 18-20 year old daughter got invaded by robbers at her apartment; Then our country is telling our citizens to "Call the emergency service and hide"...
And yes i know its not this simple but we have a women in charge after all lmfao
