years ago when I was in the navy, I played a tin whistle because as an Engineer, I could play it, and hear it in the Engine Room. Sometime back I stopped playing, it's probably been 20 years now. I've been thinking of taking up the guitar, and not the penny whistle because I want deeper sounds. Honestly, until this moment, I didn't know the Low D existed... Thank You, now I have to rethink some things. lol
Low D may be most common. But there are low whistles in several different keys. This piece is on the Howard Music channel - Howards of Sheffield, England make this low D, with several different mouthpieces. Once I bought one, I basically retired pretty much the other half dozen whistles of mine. Because this one does so much. It's unlike playing a high D - for me anyway - because I can wave a finger near a hole to bend a note, I can easily add vibrato and it does so much more on each note. It's very personal for me.
You will need to learn the pipers grip look at her left hand. Words, it’s very pricey, but carboney whistles has a more compact version of a low d whistle . I must say well worth it I have a Low d Dixon, resin, tunable whistle. And the carbon one from carbony with the more compact holes.
@@stevewolfe3214 - the Howards whistle is 2/3 brass 1/3 tin (dampens the resonant 'tinginess' you would otherwise get from brass) and produces a sound which I find far more preferable than the simple dull sound of carbon fiber.
Beautifully played. The low whistles remind me of what I imagine are the mediterranean-esque origins of the gaelic culture. The sounds of our people, alongside the Greeks, the Scythians, Carthage and the fathers of Moors or Berbers.

I have tears in my eyes... You play so beautifully. I hope you are well. what a talent I like you and your music.
There is nothing like hearing a wonderfully played instrument. All the erudite arguments lay in ruins. This is just drop dead gorgeous by any standard you want use, both the playing and the sound of the instrument are superb and heart stopping!
Beautiful lady and music , I made eight PVC transverse flutes in LOW D, I checked each one of them and sound grate, sorry about my english but I'm from Mexico..
Your english is very good, Guillermo from Mexico; perhaps you also should make a video? Wonderful skill to be able to make an instrument that sounds lovely as this; best wishes to you1
@@TamsinElliott Sorry forgot to say you played that so well. It is now yet another song I have to learn. I have a Kerry Optima but it does not sound as rich as this. Lots of breathy notes on mine. Is your sound filtered in some way before you upload stuff? Sounds gorgeous
@@TamsinElliott One year later (plus much learning of jigs, reels, ornamentations later) and I can now also play this tune fairly well. Although having difficulty getting last phrase in one breath. Thank you so much, for the inspiration. This is a magical tune. I have listened to all available versions. But I still prefer your version of this tune.
A pleasure to hear, well done, those long fingers put to good use, I've always liked and played this too on a low c, but unfortunately not like you do...greetings from Gloucester uk
Yes!, I´m from Mexico and I have heard about your work ..Ilove your work,.sorry about my English ok?,. I made a low D PVC flute, a transverse flute in low D and in my opinion they sound good..love you!!.
It is a Howard “Black Silk” whistle - Low D. Tamsin says the one she plays has a “Balanced” head. I bought one this year and love the voice. I also experienced great service.
@@Misiwall wow, I've been learning the Irish whistle pretty consistently now for a couple of months, and I've been looking for exactly a kind of resource for learning new traditional tunes online. this website is amazing! Thanks for sharing the link. 🙂
Would be nice, but it's got so many ornaments that I find it better to just learn it bit by bit by ear and ornament it the way I like. Since my piper's grip is not that good yet, I'm learning it on my high D whistle first and then I'll switch to low as I get better.
Here is a sheet music note of this wonderful song for your imagination. You can start trying to play according to it. The length of the notes in the sheet does not correspond to the recording by Tamsin Elliott. Tamsin is an experienced player, so her performance corresponds to that. And as Fresh Nettles wrote, there are a lot of ornaments, so you have to follow and listen to the video and trying and trying :). thesession.org/tunes/6623
@@Junajs Yes, but not had it for long. Struggled with the Piper's grip for a bit, then I found Tamsin's video about transition from high to low whistles - problem solved. Now I am looking for music, so thanks again.
Beautiful playing. This qualifies as a definitive version of the tune.
I can almost visualize this good-natured Irish boy. What a beautiful musical translation.

Hello, I love it! I wanted to know what type of flute it is, where I can buy it.?
www.howardmusic.co.uk/low-d-whistles/
Tamsin plays beautifully. Can you tell me does that whistle have the standard balanced M-3 head? Love the sound.
I was going to ask this question too! Would love to to know which head is being used!
I think it was the balanced head, yes!
Wonderful playing and tone! Do you know if your Balanced Head had the Acoustic Resin Howard advertise as an extra?
Which head are you using from the Howard Low D's?
The balanced one!
Would love to know what brand this whistle is and where to buy it 🥲

Sheet music source anyone? Beautifully played in a recitative style with the 3/4 time sig given lots of rubato.
