- Thanks for watching. I've been playing Read Dead Redemption 2 for about a week straight at this point and have no plans to stop. Video quality might be suffering but at least I can live out my fantasies of living in the woods and growing a big beard and dying of tuberculosis.
Seriously thinking of disappearing into the wilderness but like in ten years or so, not now. Can never prepare too early though.

The Russian for the «ice road» is «зимник»: something you can only operate in winter. They are marked on the maps correspondingly. Fun fact, one can not cross Lena river in fall or in spring: it is either in winter by truck or in summer by ferry.
I know a potential (albeit somewhat impractical) solution: Hovercraft

Having driven in frozen Finnish forests with very similar but Finnish equipment, I have immense respect for these absolute madmen.

a shoutout to the spintires series of games (mudrunner and snowrunner) for giving this kind of experience to the masses and learning about it aswell, those who have played these games know how absolutely stressful it is sometimes
When I’m getting stuck in snow drifts, and going mad running back and forth on some of the harder maps, I have to remind myself I have the luxury of putting down a controller and walking away, something these guys can’t just do in real life. The physical and mental fatigue must be tough out there.
Still one of my favourite games though, Russian trucks are pretty awesome.
@@tomgray8156 The modding scene for those games is insane too,my favorite modded truck is the T100 "Arnie" as it's nigh impossible to stop.
The original demo was so cool back in the day. I'm glad they got the success they deserved!
@@ScarlettStunningSpace I put many hours on that original Tech Demo. Hella good fun. I don't exactly love the direction the game went after Spintires and Mudrunner, but all 3 are still pretty fun.
Mudrunner and snow runner make me want to go buy one of every russian military truck.

Living in the only Russian region which rely only on ice roads(Chukotka - the north western tip of the country next to Alaska), I can say that Ural trucks are most popular here. In other Siberian or Far Eastern regions of the country (even in the coldest one like Yakutia) - there are paved highways which connect its biggest cities with the rest of the country. Even the "road of bones" to Magadan are pretty passable for ordinary trucks and even just personal cars nowadays.
But on the ice roads...Ural have its dominance. Kamaz and others are in less numbers here.
Also despite we,Russians,call it "winter road", the ice roads began to be operational only in the beginning of the spring because swampy tundra needs time to be frozen enough to be passable for the truck. Sometimes if the winter is not enough cold or too much snowy, some ice roads failing to be opened. The road workers lost one bulldozer in unfrozen tundra mud, then another... As a result the ice road project fails and goods delivery become to rely on aviation. The prices in isolated communities jumping two or three times higher(except on certain goods subsided by government) some goods are being out of stock.
Thats why we use massive delivery(or "Nothern delivery"/"Северный завоз") to such idolated communities. One mass delivery by shipping when the sea or river are free from ice(we call it "navigation"/"навигация"), the second - during the ice road period. The government issued the law making such delivery protected and regulated by the state.
That Russian saying reminded me of all the dashcam videos I've seen.
"IN RUSSIA, ROAD IS ROAD! DRIVE WHERE YOU WANT!"

When I played Mudrunner back in the day and Snowrunner nowadays, I always though that it was impossible that the paths and roads to certain villages were so harsh and tedious
But now I see that it really is the reality of russian trucking industry in Siberia. Like I say, you never go to sleep at night without learning anything new
And yes, Kamaz, KraZ and Ural will always be the simbol of that industry
Your russian pronounciation is better than mine. I tried russian once and my russian friend said I sound like a dying cow. Now I started to learn Finnish. Much easier for me to learn.

@@yourmaid4982 well achsually, Baltic languages isn't really a term, as Latvian and Lithuanian are slavic languages, but Estonian is Finno-Ugric and is more similar to Finnish and Hungarian (and some minority languages mostly spoken in Russia)
@@kirby1225 that is true, as I came up with term myself. And I distinct those north slavs cause those languages very different to South and East Slavic.
And yeah I'm also differ those of North cause of hard to learn language structure.
Maybe I'm over simplifying but I even think a lot of Baltic trio don't even use their own language, instead talking Russian(at least older post-soviet generation)
Love the vid. I would’ve also brought up the Spintires series of games as they are also a great way for the masses to understand the difficulty of these kinds of semi-frozen swampy terrain.
Also, coming from a Russian, your pronunciation was better than a lot of A-List celebrities in multimillion dollar movies so good job!

You should do an entire full video on Russian Trucking and the differences in common Truck models there. I am highly interested in KAMAZ Semi-Trucks personally and your videos have been an amazing addition to my truck knowledge.
Those trucks are so tough and good that there being sold in Asia in droves. But I think the URAL NEXT is really the top seller here as it has all the modern gizmos but keeps that Russian quality of just rolling through even the stickiest mud without problem.

KamAZ is just a basic truck, there is no sikret misterios durability of Russian bear balalaika vodka christian soul in it; it's driven not due to it's superiority over European equipment but due to the company owner oligarch skimping on equipment budget. To not have to fuck around with keeping the KamAZik running is a pipe dream of many.

Nice russian pronunciation 👍 Fun fact I have learned about trucking in harsh conditions like these is that one indispensable item that drivers carry with them is a regular brick soaked in diesel fuel. Drivers can use it as a base for a fire to warm up in case of a truck breaking down somewhere far away from any help.
If the truck is off for more than 10 minutes all the fluids will freeze solid and it will take literal days in a heated shop to thaw it back out
They also have antifreeze in Russia. It's not bad at all yet at -35 which I have experince from. I live in northern Finland. Of course it gets much worse nearing -50.
biggest problem is thick, not frozen oil but when you can use a block heater it's no problem. cold places also use winter diesel.
@@piuthemagicman Antifreeze and winter diesel are only good up to a certain temperature, and the way the fuel, coolant, and air (water in the airlines freeze solid) system is on most semis, once the diesel starts to gel up it's impossible to start, the fuel system needs to be pressurized to sometimes up to 6,000 PSI and it can't sustain that way with diesel in gel form
@@christophergore4247 I am aware, I'm a mechanic. point I made was it's not THAT extreme. nothing is beginning to freeze in 10min. They've been dealing with cold forever there and they have all this winter prep in Siberia too.
@@piuthemagicman When it's 40 below shit freezes quick, even arctic diesel is only good until about 45 below, and it still gets a good bit colder than that. It doesn't freeze solid immediately, it starts to gel up long before it freezes and stops flowing. Maybe it's not that extreme where you are, but over in Siberia and far north Canada and Alaska where this style of trucking is necessary it's only extreme. That's why they do it, because nobody else can. That's why it's dangerous, because not all succeed.

I gotta love the lifted Ural and Kamaz trucks used by them, The TH-cam "OFF-ROAD DRIVERS YAKUTIA" really shows how insane there job is and the toughest people are required to be able to live through such climates and drive such large trucks.

The TH-cam "OFF-ROAD DRIVERS YAKUTIA" are Yakut natives who drives these huge Kamaz trucks in the coldest Siberian weather. Give there content a sub, the heroism it takes to do what they do is amazing.

Not always though.While Siberia is the biggest(and the most dangerous)part of Russia,The European part is basically Euro Trucking but you can also drive American trucks(since the limit width of trucks are 23 meters in Russia).But still,both Siberian and Eastern European roads lack quality,since most of the roads here are kinda fucked up.Although,i must say that the road quality and traffic safety really did improve over the years.

Snowrunner came from mudrunner that came from spintires that was inspired by the russian trucking industry of ex army vehicles on civilian logging operations in the mud.

I LOVE Soviet Russian trucks, there are so cool and badass! Much more awesome than the pavement princesses I always see here in the states.
Good chunk of them are normally civilian varients of or freshly retired military trucks.
Mainly the Ural 4320, Kamaz 6x6's ZIL 131's and Kraz 255's that i think for the most part are just military trucks with a quick repaint and new modules slapped onto the chassis
My country the Philippines loves these Urals. From Civilian to Military, we're eating up all URAL NEXT and even Kamaz 5311s due to how much capable they are in our thick and sticky tropical mud that only the most modified 4X4s can cross. Its also nice that it doesn't take much to maintain them and anyone with a wrench and socket kit can get it running.
Very similar conditions to Siberia in the U.S. is Alaskan Dalton Highway many lost their lives on the road back in the day when oil discovery attracted companies to the north.

Fun fact : an ice road trucker named Vitaly Laletin is currently one of the 10 strongest arm wrestlers in the world right now, and was even ranked #2 at some point, he's also a record holder for some grip strength feats such as a 159.6kg grip right hand
It gets to -30F where I live, but I'm glad it's like that for only a short period of time and not the whole winter. Studded snow tires make all the difference, I learned that the hard way. I'm just glad my truck starts when it's that cold lol

Rasha's kamaz drivers love flip flops a lot. But in general they not only drive but also have to service their truck by their own whether it is their trucks or not. But flip flops are their favorite type of shoes.

Your Russian is pretty good. One simple mistakes, it's "dorOgoy", not "dorogOy". The former means "road" , the latter stands for "dear".
Russian trucks are built to last. Dad used to tell me that he drove an army KamAZ, and when it would break in the middle of the road, they would easily jury rig it with swearing, a crowbar/sledgehammer/both and some stuff they find in the cab, until they found a replacement. Yes, they (mostly) are not really comfortable, but hey, comfort isn't a factor when you choose a truck to haul heavy loads across Siberia.
Comfort later. Surviving the trek itself and making sure you deliver much needed cargo to the villages is more important.

Russia is getting a bit like Iran, in as much as the country and it's ppl are amazing and endlessly fascinating, while the management (I mean those in charge) leave a lot to be desired. You should have a look at the truckers who who helped break the siege of Leningrad, crossing the frozen lake Ladoga. The drivers operating their vehicles with the door open ready to bail if the truck went thru the ice.

One thing I was planning to do was buy one of those Russian 6x6 military trucks, convert it into an RV and drive it from Russia to North America across the Bering Strait (on a boat, obviously), but then Russia invaded Ukraine and the chances of getting permission to cross the strait went from low to impossible.
There are no border crossing points on neither Chukotka nor Alaska, so you'd have to use some of the mainstream ports (Magadan, Vladivostok, Seattle) anyways.
Would you like to hop on this endeavor of trying out Russian trucks, as a Russian and an owner of one, I would be happy to help :)
